The “Amaryllis” Holiday Bulb – Free Crochet Pattern

Embrace the elegance of the holiday season with “The Amaryllis” Holiday Bulb Caravan. This design moves away from the typical snowy winter scenes and focuses on the warmth and lush beauty of indoor holiday blooms. The caravan itself is a structural marvel, designed to resemble a giant flowering bulb. The base is rounded and earthy brown, mimicking the papery skin of an Amaryllis bulb, while the upper exterior is crafted in luxurious “Velvet Red” yarn, representing the unfolding petals.

The interior is a festive conservatory bathed in warm light. Giant pots hold magnificent Amaryllis flowers, with their signature large brown bulbs sitting proudly above the soil, supporting thick green stems and vibrant red trumpet blooms. The scene is decorated with rich details: red velvet bows tied around the pots, miniature gift boxes wrapped in gold, and a tiny music book open to a holiday carol. Outside, the scene is set on a lush green moss carpet (no snow here!), where a shy baby Fawn with white spots gently investigates the red flowers. This project is sophisticated, textural, and full of holiday cheer.

To create the specific rounded “bulb” shape of the base and support the weight of the velvet upper walls, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique is mandatory. It ensures the walls maintain their curvature and rigidity, preventing the structure from looking like a deflated balloon. We will alternate between a standard hook (or slightly larger for velvet) for the shell and a precision micro-hook for the delicate flower parts and the fawn.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn:

Velvet Red (Chenille/Velvet): Main upper exterior, bows.

Bulb Brown (Cotton): Lower exterior base, plant bulbs, fawn.

    Stem Green: Plant stems, leaves.

    Moss Green (Textured): Exterior carpet.

Gold/Yellow: Lights, gift ribbon, flower anthers.

White: Fawn spots, music book pages.

    Black: Eyes, tires.

  • Hooks:

3.0mm (Size D/3): For the Velvet exterior (if bulky) or the moss carpet.

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the Brown cotton base and structure.

1.0mm – 1.25mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the Amaryllis flowers, fawn details, and tiny gifts.

  • Structure: 8-9 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, strong craft wire (essential for the heavy flower heads), fabric glue, tapestry needle.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)

Part 1: The Bulb Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm (Cotton) and 3.0mm (Velvet).

1. The Earthy Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Brown yarn.

  1. Row 1: Ch 30. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (29)
  2. Row 2-45: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4.5″ x 7″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The “Bulb-to-Bloom” Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. The shape changes from Brown at the bottom to Red Velvet at the top.

Panel A: Exterior (Two-Tone Texture)

  • Start with Bulb Brown (Cotton).
  • Row 1: Ch 95. Sc across.
  • Rows 2-15 (The Bulb Base): Sc across in Brown.

Shaping: To mimic the roundness of a bulb, you can perform a few increases in the center of the rows and decreases near the edges, or rely on the plastic canvas to hold a curved shape. Let’s stick to a straight panel for the sandwich method, but curve the canvas insert.

  • Change to Velvet Red.
  • Rows 16-40 (The Flower Top): Sc across using the Velvet yarn. This plush texture represents the rich petals.
  • Window Cutouts: Cut a window on the Left wall within the Red section. The Right side is the open viewing stage.

Panel B: Interior (Cream or Gold)

  • Use a smooth cotton yarn in Cream or Gold to reflect the warm lighting inside. Match the dimensions of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip. Crucial: Cut the bottom corners of the canvas slightly rounded to give that bulbous feel.
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter. Use Brown for the bottom half and Red for the top half.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel (Brown bottom, Red Velvet top) to close the back.

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.0mm – 1.25mm Hook. Amaryllis are bold, structured flowers.

1. The Bulb (Above Ground)

Real Amaryllis bulbs sit half-exposed. Use Brown.

  • Bulb: MR 6 sc, Inc to 24. Sc 5 rounds. Dec to 12. Stuff firmly to make a hard ball.

Roots: Stitch tiny beige roots coming from the bottom.

  • Pot: Terracotta or Gold. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. BLO Sc 5 rounds.

Assembly: Glue the Brown Bulb so it sits half-in, half-out of the pot.

2. The Thick Stem

  • Stem: Green. MR 6 sc. Sc around to create a thick, sturdy tube (approx 3-4 inches tall). Insert a strong wire inside. Sew to the top of the Bulb.

3. The Red Trumpet Flower

  • Petals: Vibrant Red. Ch 10.

Row 1: Sc, Hdc, Dc, Tr, Tr, Dc, Hdc, Sc. (Long, wide petal).

Wire: Mandatory. Crochet fine wire into the edge of each petal. Make 6 petals per flower.

  • Center: Yellow. 6 stamens made of wire wrapped in yellow thread or dipped in paint.
  • Assembly: Group the 6 petals around the stamens to form a large trumpet shape. Attach to the top of the green stem. Make 2-3 large plants.

Part 3: Festive Interior Details

Use Hook Size: 1.0mm.

1. Velvet Bows

  • Ribbon: Red Velvet yarn. Ch 20. Tie into a simple bow. Glue these onto the pots of the Amaryllis plants.

2. Mini Gift Boxes

  • Box: Red/Green/Gold. Ch 6. Sc 6 rows. Fold into a cube. Stuff.

3. Music Book

  • Cover: Dark Blue or Red. Ch 6, Sc 4 rows.
  • Pages: White. Ch 5, Sc 4 rows. Sew inside.

Notes: Use black thread to embroider tiny music notes or lines. Place open on a bench or the floor.

4. Warm Lighting

  • String Lights: Gold yarn chain.

Bulbs: Tiny yellow bobbles (Ch 2, dc cluster) spaced every inch. Drape across the ceiling.

Part 4: Exterior & The Fawn

1. The Baby Fawn

Use 1.0mm Hook. Delicate and cute.

  • Head: Light Brown. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 3 rounds. Dec to 6.

Snout: Tiny muzzle sewn to front. Black nose.

  • Body: Light Brown. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 5 rounds. Dec to 6.

  • Pose: Position the fawn standing or bowing its head to sniff a large Amaryllis flower (perhaps one placed outside).

2. The Moss Carpet

Use 3.0mm Hook and Moss Green.

  • Base: Ch 20. Sc rows to form an irregular organic shape.

Texture: Work *Sc, Bobble St, Sc* randomly across the surface to create lumpy, soft moss texture.

Placement: Place the caravan on top of this mat.

3. Wheels

Use 2.5mm Hook.

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Silver or dark grey swirl.
  • Sew to the Brown base section.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the transition from the Brown base to the Red Velvet top is secure. The 3-layer sandwich is vital to keep the heavy velvet from sagging.
  2. Interior Staging:
    • Glue the heavy Amaryllis pots to the floor. The flowers should be the tallest items.
    • Tie the Velvet Bows to the pots.
    • Stack the Gift Boxes near the back.
    • Place the Music Book on a small stand or the floor.
  3. Exterior Scene:
    • Lay down the Moss Carpet.
    • Position the Caravan on the moss.
    • Place the Baby Fawn on the moss, interacting with the scene.
