The “Chicken Coop” Caravan – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to the countryside! The “Farmhouse” trend has officially hit the miniature crochet world with this adorable “Chicken Coop” Caravan. This project captures the rustic charm of a backyard homestead on wheels. The exterior is designed to mimic a weathered wooden structure, clad in “Faux White Wood” siding with charmingly realistic details like peeling paint and windows covered in gray chicken wire mesh.

Open the doors, and you are transported straight into the coop. The interior is a maximalist display of poultry farming. The floor is scattered with golden yellow straw, providing a soft bed for the inhabitants. A sturdy wooden nesting box unit lines the back wall, filled with a mix of fresh white and brown eggs. Accessories like burlap corn sacks, grain feeders, and a tiny wooden ladder complete the scene. Outside, the mother hen tends to her nest while a chaotic, cute brood of yellow chicks runs around a rustic wooden fence.

This is a structural project that relies heavily on texture. To ensure the “wooden” walls stand straight and the nesting boxes don’t collapse, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique creates the rigid, box-like walls necessary for a durable playset. We will use a standard hook for the coop structure and a precision micro-hook for the tiny chicks and eggs.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only (Essential for the wood plank effect)

Part 1: The Coop Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Straw-Covered Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Golden Yellow (or Brown base with Yellow loops).

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Texture Option: If you want realistic straw, use the Loop Stitch for every other row on the top panel only. Cut the loops and brush them out to look like scattered hay.
  4. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Faux Wood Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. The texture is key here.

Panel A: Exterior (White Wood Siding)

  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Wall + Roof + Right Wall). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-35: Work in BLO (Back Loop Only) for every row. This creates horizontal ridges that look like wooden weatherboard siding.
  • Window Cutouts: On the side wall sections, create square window openings (Ch 10, Sk 10).
  • The “Peeling Paint” Effect: Before assembly, use Beige or Light Brown embroidery floss to stitch random, jagged patches on the white ridges. This simulates old paint chipping away to reveal the wood underneath.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Wood/Brown)

  • Use Brown yarn to make the interior look like a wooden shed. Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

The Chicken Wire Windows:

  • Before sandwiching, crochet a mesh for the window gaps using Gray yarn (1.5mm hook).Pattern: *Ch 2, Sk 1, Sc* to create a grid. Sew this mesh securely between the exterior and interior panels over the window holes.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers using White yarn.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel (White BLO exterior, Brown interior) to close the back.

    • Secure the Nesting Box unit to the back wall. Fill with straw and eggs.
    • Lean the Ladder against the boxes.
    • Place the Corn Sacks in the corner.

    • Scatter the Chicks inside and outside the fence.
    • Set up the Wooden Fence in front of the caravan
