Cornish Cream-Tea Bunny – Free Knitting Pattern

Intro
A hand-knit bunny in a mint tea-dress with cream scallop hem, short cream bolero, pink Mary-Jane shoes, and a cream knit boater hat with mint ribbon. Accessories: teapot cross-body purse, mini basket of sweets, scone, spoon, and strawberry jam packet.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn (DK, smooth wool or wool blend; choose non-fuzzy for crisp stitches)
    1. Bunny fur: 35 g light oat heather
    2. Inner ear blush: scraps pale rose
    3. Dress main: 25–30 g soft mint
    4. Dress trim: 12–15 g clotted-cream
    5. Bolero + scarf: 20 g clotted-cream
    6. Hat: 15 g clotted-cream; ribbon & bow: 6 g mint
    7. Shoes: 15 g petal pink
    8. Purse (body/teapot): 12 g clotted-cream; emblem: a few meters gray
    9. Tights/Soles: 12–15 g warm beige
    10. Basket: 8 g honey gold + pastel scraps for sweets
    11. Jam packet, spoon handle: small scraps cream, strawberry red, silver gray

    1. US 3 (3.25 mm) circular 32–40″ or DPNs for small circumferences
    2. US 2 (2.75 mm) for firm trims, shoes, hat brim, purse strap

    1. Pair of 8 mm black safety eyes
    2. Black embroidery thread for nose/smile
    3. Polyester fiberfill
    4. Stitch markers, waste yarn, tapestry needle
    5. Thin plastic card for purse base and hat brim (optional)

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Gauge: 26 sts × 36 rnds = 4″ (10 cm) in stockinette in the round on US 3 after light steam.
  • Size: Bunny stands ~9.5–10″ (24–25.5 cm) excluding hat brim.

Abbreviations (A–Z, easy to scan)

  • BO — Bind off, secure the edge.
  • CO — Cast on, begin stitches.
  • dec — Decrease.
  • inc — Increase.
  • k — Knit.
  • kfb — Knit front and back (increase 1).
  • k2tog — Knit two together (right-leaning decrease).
  • m1L — Make one left (lift bar, knit through front).
  • m1R — Make one right (lift bar, knit through back).
  • p — Purl.
  • pm/sm — Place marker / slip marker.

Construction Overview

  1. Head, floppy ears, body with beige tights, arms, tail.
  2. Pink Mary-Jane shoes worked separately.
  3. Tea-dress with vertical panels and cream scallop hem; removable.

  5. Boater hat with mint ribbon and bow.

With oat on US 3, CO 8.
Rnd 1: kfb around — 16.
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around — 24.

Rnd 7: (k3, kfb) around — 40.

Rnds 10–20: k even to form a gently tall, rounded head.
Insert safety eyes between Rnds 14–15, 10 sts apart. Embroider a tiny triangle nose 2 rnds below eyes and a short center smile.

Rnd 22: k; stuff firmly.
Rnd 23: (k5, k2tog) ×6 — 36.

2) Floppy Ears (Make 2)

With oat, CO 6.
Rnd 1: kfb around — 12.
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around — 18.
Rnd 4: k.
Rnd 5: (k2, kfb) around — 24.
Rnds 6–10: k even for ear length.
Rnd 11: (k2, k2tog) around — 18.
Rnd 12: (k1, k2tog) around — 12.
Rnd 13: k2tog around — 6. Break yarn; flatten, seam base edge.
With rose, work a soft surface line down the inner ear. Fold the base into a gentle crescent to encourage a sideways flop.


3) Neck, Body, and Tights

Pick up 24 sts around the head base with oat.
Rnd 1: k, decreasing evenly to 18 (approx. k2, k2tog repeats).
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: (k2, m1L, k2, m1R) ×3 — 24.
Rnd 5: (k3, m1L, k3, m1R) ×3 — 30.
Rnds 6–12: k even; start stuffing.
Rnd 13: (k4, m1) ×6 — 36.
Switch to beige (tights).
Rnd 14: k.
Rnd 15: (k5, m1) ×6 — 42.
Rnd 16: k.
Rnd 17: (k6, m1) ×6 — 48.
Rnd 18: k.
Rnd 19: (k6, k2tog) ×6 — 42 for gentle hip taper.
Divide for legs: 21 sts each.

4) Arms (Make 2)

Rnds 6–12: k even; lightly stuff hand and wrist only.
Rnd 13: k2tog ×6 — 6. Draw closed; leave top flat for seaming.


5) Tail

With oat, CO 6, kfb around — 12. Next rnd k. Next: (k1, k2tog) ×4 — 8. Stuff a tiny puff; close and sew low at back.


6) Mary-Jane Shoes (2)

Soles (beige, flat)
CO 6.
Row 1: p.
Row 2: kfb, k4, kfb — 8.
Row 3: p.
Row 4: kfb, k6, kfb — 10.
Row 5: p.
Row 6: k. BO. Block flat.

Uppers (pink, in the round on US 2)
Pick up 26 sts evenly around each sole.
Rnd 1: k.
Rnd 2: (k11, k2tog) ×2 — 24.
Rnd 3: k.
Rnd 4: (k10, k2tog) ×2 — 22.
Create instep opening: k7, BO 4, k11 — 18 live sts.

Toe shaping:

Scallop Border (cream, worked flat & attached)
At hem edge, [k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k] pattern is over-curvy; to match the photo, use simple wave:
Row A (RS): k2, (yo, k2tog) ×2, k2 around; join.
Row B: purl around.
BO loosely. Steam to “soft wave” rather than peaks.

Bodice (mint)
Return to the 72 live skirt sts above the cream round.
Rnd 1: (k10, k2tog) ×6 — 66.
Rnd 3: (k9, k2tog) ×6 — 60.
Rnd 5: (k8, k2tog) ×6 — 54.
Rnd 7: (k7, k2tog) ×6 — 48.
Work 2 rnds even. Split for armholes: 24 front / 24 back.

Back (flat, mint)
Row 1 (WS): p.
Rows 2–12: st st. BO all.

Front (flat, mint)
Row 1 (WS): p.
Rows 2–6: st st.
Rows 7–10: work narrow vertical fake rib in center (k1tbl every RS row for 4 sts) to echo the photo’s textured placket.
Rows 11–12: k1, p1 rib. BO in rib.

Neckband (cream, optional)
Pick up 36 sts around front and back neck; k1,p1 rib 4 rows; BO. Keep neckline modest to show scarf.


8) Cream Bolero (short sleeves) + Skinny Lace Scarf

Bolero Body (cream, worked flat; cropped)
CO 60 sts on US 3.
Row 1 (RS): k. Row 2: p.
Rows 3–6: st st.
Shape armholes: BO 5 at start of next 2 rows — 50.
Next 6 rows: dec 1 each edge every RS row — 44.
Work even until piece measures 1.6″ (4 cm).
Neck shaping: BO center 12; work sides separately, dec 1 at neck edge on next 2 RS rows — 14 each side.
Work 2 more rows and BO shoulders.

Sleeve Caps (pick up & knit in the round)
Pick up 28 sts around each armhole.
Rnd 1–8: k.
Rnd 9–12: k1, p1 rib. BO in rib. Sleeves are short and slightly rolled.

Collar Band
Pick up around entire opening ~70 sts.
Work k1,p1 rib 4 rows. Bind off very loosely to create that soft round collar edge.

Skinny Lace Scarf (cream)
CO 6 on US 2.
Row 1: k.
Row 2: p.
Repeat [yo, k2tog, k2] on RS rows and purl WS for 12–14″. BO; knot gently at the neck.


9) Knit Boater Hat with Mint Ribbon

Crown (cream, in the round)
CO 72 sts; work k1,p1 rib 4 rnds (inner sweatband).
Rnds 5–12: k even.
Rnds 13–20: shape slightly domed top:

  • R13: (k6, k2tog) ×9 — 63.
  • R15: (k5, k2tog) ×9 — 54.
  • R17: (k4, k2tog) ×9 — 45.
  • R19: (k3, k2tog) ×9 — 36.
    R20: k2tog ×18 — 18; draw closed. Steam flat from the top for a boater-like shallow crown.

Brim (cream, picked up; US 2 for firmness)
Pick up 72 sts from the rib edge.
Rnd 1: kfb around — 144.
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: (k7, kfb) ×18 — 162.
Rnd 4–6: k.
Rnd 7: (k8, kfb) ×18 — 180.
Rnd 8: k.
BO firmly. Optionally insert a thin plastic ring between the last two rounds for a crisp brim.

Ribbon & Bow (mint, flat)
Ribbon: CO 6; work garter 14″ (35.5 cm); BO and wrap around the crown.
Bow: CO 10; work garter 12 rows; BO, cinch center with yarn to form a bow; sew over the ribbon join at right side.

10) Teapot Cross-Body Purse

Body (cream, flat)
CO 16; work st st 12 rows; BO. Make a second piece. Seam sides/bottom; insert plastic card if desired; leave top open.

Teapot Shape Appliqué (cream)
Spout: CO 5; knit 6 rows; BO; stitch to right side.
Handle: i-cord CO 2; knit 2.5″; sew to left side in a loop.
Lid knob: CO 3, knit 2 rows, pull tight into a nub and attach top center.
Emblem (gray): duplicate-stitch a tiny teapot silhouette on the front.

Strap (cream or mint)
i-cord CO 2; knit 10–11″ (25–28 cm). Stitch to purse sides so the bag rests at the bunny’s hip.


11) Honey Basket with Sweets

Basket (honey gold, worked in the round)
Base: CO 6; kfb each in next rnd — 12.
Next rnd: [k1, kfb] ×6 — 18.
Next rnd: [k2, kfb] ×6 — 24.
Side walls: k even 6 rnds in linen stitch (k1, sl1 with yarn in front; next rnd shift).
Handle: pick up 4 sts on rim; knit i-cord 2.25″ (5.5 cm); reattach on opposite rim.
Sweets: knit tiny pastel balls (CO 6, 2 rnds k, draw closed) and drop into basket.


12) Scone, Spoon, and Jam Packet

Scone (cream + honey)
Bottom: honey CO 8; knit 4 rnds; stuff; draw closed.
Top: cream CO 8; knit 3 rnds; draw closed; sew atop bottom; add a thin ring of red duplicate stitch “jam.”

Spoon (silver; optional stick core)
CO 4; knit 1.25″ i-cord (handle).
Bowl: CO 6 separately; knit 3 rows st st; BO; gather into an oval and sew to handle tip.

Jam Packet (cream with red)
CO 10; knit 6 rows garter; BO. Duplicate-stitch a red rectangle and a tiny green leaf to suggest strawberry.


13) Assembly

  • Stitch ears to head sides with outward flop; tips forward slightly.
  • Ladder-stitch arms to body just below neckline.
  • Attach tail low at back.
  • Slip on dress first, then bolero and tie the skinny scarf.
  • Put on shoes and tack at inner heel for stability.
  • Pop the boater hat on top; secure with a hidden stitch if the brim lifts.
  • Drape purse cross-body; place basket at right side. Set scone, spoon, and jam as props or tack lightly to the table scene.

14) Blocking & Finishing

  • Steam block garments separately with a press cloth.
  • Smooth the dress panels so vertical ridges and the cream wave hem read clearly.
  • Curve the boater brim over a plate while cooling for a crisp, flat edge.
  • Weave all ends on the WS; secure knots.
  • Lightly brush the inner ear blush to soften; keep face stitches neat and unfluffed.

  • Head circumference: ~8.25″ (21 cm); head height (chin to crown): ~3″ (7.6 cm).
  • Ears: 2.9–3.1″ (7.5–8 cm) from base to tip; base mounted level with eye line.
  • Neck to hem of dress: ~4.25″ (10.8 cm).
  • Skirt hem circumference after blocking: ~9–9.5″ (23–24 cm).
  • Bolero width across back: ~3.25″ (8.3 cm).
  • Hat brim diameter: ~3.7″ (9.4 cm); crown height: ~0.9″ (2.3 cm).
  • Shoe sole length: 1.65–1.75″ (4.2–4.5 cm).
  • Purse body: ~1.8″ × 1.4″ (4.6 × 3.6 cm); strap 10–11″ (25–28 cm).
  • Basket height without handle: 1.25″ (3.2 cm).

16) Troubleshooting

  • Dress rides up: add 2 more stockinette rounds above the waist or steam hem again.
  • Brim curls: work one extra increase round and insert a thin plastic strip before binding off.
  • Shoes gape: whipstitch the shoe edge to the ankle at inner sides; snug the strap.
  • Bolero too tight: increase body CO by +4 sts and extend armhole BO by +1 st each side.
  • Ears don’t flop: steam and pinch a crease at the base; tack a single stitch to the head’s side to hold angle.
