Introduction

Meet the Cozy Christmas Turtle—a soft, squishy amigurumi turtle in a red holiday sweater, cream trim, green scarf, and a classic Santa hat with a cream brim and pom. He sits on a tabletop with mini festive props (wreath, candy cane, gifts, mug, and a tiny “snow globe”)—perfect for photos and seasonal décor. This pattern is written in US terms, worked amigurumi-style in continuous rounds unless stated.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials

  • Yarn (Worsted/Aran #4, cotton or acrylic):
    1. Body & head: light beige (A)
    2. Shell top: soft green (B)
    3. Shell bottom & trims: cream (C)
    4. Sweater & mug stripe: Christmas red (D)
    5. Scarf: pine green (E)
    6. Hat pom/brim & sweater trims: cream (C)
    7. Wreath: green (E) + bow in red (D)
    8. Gifts: assorted (D/E/C)
    9. Candy cane: red (D) + cream (C)
    10. Snow globe: very light blue (F) + base brown (G) + speck white (C)
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4). Use a size that gives tight stitches with your yarn.
  • Safety eyes: 10 mm black (pair).
  • Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, fiberfill, fabric glue (optional for minis), pins.
  • Wire (optional): short piece for candy cane curve.
  • Cardboard circle (optional): 4.5–5 cm for shell bottom support.
  • Blush or fabric paint (optional).

Finished Size & Gauge

  • Finished size: seated height ~9.5–10.5 in (24–27 cm) with hat; shell diameter ~4.75 in (12 cm).
  • Gauge (in sc): ~18 sts × 20 rows = 4 in/10 cm in the round, firmly stuffed. Gauge is not critical but affects final size; keep stitches tight so stuffing doesn’t show.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in same st)
  • dec – invisible decrease (sc 2 sts together through front loops)
  • sc blo/flo – sc in back/front loop only
  • rep – repeat
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • […] – repeat instructions inside brackets
  • ( ) – stitch counts at end of rounds/rows

Pattern Notes (Read First)

  • Work continuous rounds unless a turning row is indicated; use a marker to track first stitch.
  • Stuff as you go: head and limbs firmly, shell moderately to maintain a soft, rounded profile.
  • The turtle’s proportions match the reference image: slightly oversized head, chubby limbs, cylindrical body in a sweater, rounded shell with cream edging, Santa hat leaning to one side, short green scarf with simple tails.
  • Attachments & angles: legs splayed forward for a seated pose; arms slightly forward and low; shell centered high on the back; hat tilted to the turtle’s right.

Assembly – Main Turtle

  1. Attach Head to Body: Center head on top of torso; whipstitch around neck base (approx. 24 sts). Add a little extra stuffing under neck as you close to keep the head upright.
  2. Legs: Position the flattened legs at the body base edge, 10–11 sts apart at the front, angled slightly outward so the turtle sits stably. Sew through sweater fabric and leg edges securely.
  3. Arms: Place low on sides of torso, 2 rnds below neckline trim, angled slightly forward.
  4. Tail: Sew at center back bottom, peeking below sweater hem.
  5. Shell: Layer Shell Bottom (C) to back of torso first; stitch lower half to the sweater across about 30–34 sts. Insert light stuffing (and optional cardboard disc). Align Shell Top (B) over it; stitch Top to Bottom around leaving the cream band visible all around. The shell sits high on the back with a neat cream rim.
  6. Sleeve Edges (C): Join C at each arm hole where it meets the sweater. Work 1 rnd sc (approx. 14–16) to form the visible cream cuffs.
  7. Hat: Seat hat slightly back on the head, tilt to the turtle’s right; stitch around the brim. Tack the tip to the right side so it drapes as in the photo, then sew on the pom.
  8. Scarf: Wrap once around neck; tie a soft knot to the left front so tails hang evenly. Add a tiny hidden stitch to fix in place if this will be handled by children.
  9. Face: Adjust smile and add a tiny nostril dot with one stitch if desired. Light blush on cheeks.

Optional Props (to match the photo)

Mini Wreath (E + D)

Ring:
Round 1 (E): MR, 12 sc (12). Round 2: sc around (12).
Round 3: Textured leaves: [sl st, (hdc, dc) in next st, sl st in next] ×4. Fasten off; shape into a small ring (~5 cm).
Bow (D): ch 18; Row 1: sl st back along chain; tie into a bow and stitch at top of wreath.

Candy Cane (D & C)

Make a slim striped tube; insert wire for shape (optional).
Foundation: With C, ch 9; join to form ring.
Rounds 1–8: sc around (8) with C.
Rounds 9–16: switch to D, sc around (8).
Repeat C/D sections to reach ~10–11 cm. Stuff lightly as you go. Insert short wire, bend into cane; close end with 4 dec → sl st to finish.

Gift Box – Small (D) & Medium (E)

Bottom (worked as cube):
Make 2 sizes using the same method; stitch counts differ.

Small Base (D):

  • Round 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
  • 2: inc around (12)
  • 3: [sc, inc] ×6 (18)
  • 4: sc blo around (18) to turn the wall
  • 5–7: sc around (18). Lightly stuff.
  • 8: [sc, dec] ×6 (12)
  • 9: dec around (6). Close.

Medium Base (E): Work as above but stop at 24 sts before walls (add an extra increase round: [2 sc, inc] ×6), then walls for 5 rounds, close similarly.

Ribbon (C): ch long strip; sl st back to make a flat tape. Wrap vertically and horizontally; add a small bow on top.

Mug (C + D)

Body (C):
Round 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
2: inc around (12)
3: [sc, inc] ×6 (18)
4: sc blo around (18)
5–7: sc around (18)
8: sl st around for rim texture, fasten off.

Stripe (D): Join D on Round 6, sc around once; fasten off.

Handle (C): ch 8; Row 1: sl st back along chain; sew ends to rim and body to form a C-shape. Add a brown felt circle inside for “cocoa” or embroider a surface spiral in G.

Tiny “Snow Globe” (F + G + C)

Base (G):
Round 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
2: inc around (12)
3: [sc, inc] ×6 (18); 4: sc around (18). Fasten off.

Dome (F):
Round 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
2: inc around (12)
3: [sc, inc] ×6 (18)
4: [2 sc, inc] ×6 (24)
5: sc around (24). Fasten off.

Stitch Dome to Base, lightly stuffing; embroider tiny white specks (C) on the dome for “snow.” Add a micro motif inside (a 4-st ball in D) before closing if you like.

Exact Positioning Guide (to match the photo)

  • Eyes: centered horizontally, 9 sts apart, placed between head Rnds 15–16.
  • Smile: 1–2 sts wide curve, on Round 17–18.
  • Hat tilt: brim seam sits slightly behind ear line; tip bent to the turtle’s right and lightly tacked down.
  • Scarf knot: offset to the turtle’s left; tails ~2.5–3 in long.
  • Sweater hems: visible cream band at neckline and bottom; sleeve cuffs narrow, just 1 rnd.
  • Legs: attach so feet extend beyond hem by ~1 cm, toes angled outward; the turtle sits stably without support.
  • Shell: cream edge visible all around, shell centered high (top edge near neckline trim), not touching hem.

Finishing Touches

  • Weave in all ends cleanly; hide knots inside pieces.
  • If the toy is for a child, sew accessories to the table photo setup only for display or secure them with extra stitches to the turtle’s hands so they’re not lost.
  • Lightly blush cheeks and the tip of the nose (optional) for the cozy, realistic look.
  • For a more photo-real finish, steam-block the scarf and hat brim (avoid melting acrylic: hover iron to steam, do not press).

Care

Spot clean with a damp cloth. If washing is necessary, place in a mesh bag, cold gentle cycle, reshape while damp, and air-dry away from direct heat.
