Introduction

Knit the Piccadilly Painter Cat—a camera-ready artist kitty in a raspberry beret, cream tee with a tiny palette badge, ink-blue paper-bag trousers with tie belt and rolled cuffs, charcoal Mary-Jane shoes, and a brown cross-body satchel. The kitty holds a small framed painting and stands beside a mini easel. This pattern is drafted to match the photo exactly so your finished piece looks the same in hand and on camera.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Framed Mini Painting & Easel (light “wood” color; US 3)

Canvas Panel
Knit a 12-st × 12-row stockinette square in cream; duplicate-stitch the red phone box & sky. Back with a tiny square of cardboard.
Frame
Pick up sts around edges and knit 1 rnd garter; BO.
Easel (simplified):

  • CO 3, knit i-cord 14 rows = rear leg.
  • CO 3, knit two i-cords 12 rows each = front legs.
  • Join tops with a sewn triangle; add a short horizontal “shelf” strip worked as a 5-st, 6-row garter rectangle.
Place the framed canvas on the shelf; tack lightly.

Assembly

Head to Body

Transfer the body neck’s 12 live sts to needle, pick up 12 sts around the head base, and Kitchener stitch or mattress seam for a seamless join. Add more stuffing before finally closing to keep the head firmly supported.

Limb Placement

  • Arms: sew on at body 8–9 rnds below neckline, angled slightly forward.
  • Legs: centered under body; ensure equal length so the cat stands evenly.
  • Tail: attach low back, curving slightly downward.

Dress the Cat

  1. Put on tee first; ensure raglan lines align with arms.
  2. Slide on trousers, thread the i-cord belt through the channel, tie a bow center front, and roll cuffs once.
  3. Fit shoes; straps lie across the insteps.
  4. Place beret slightly tilted to the right, with stalk upright; ears peek out naturally.
  5. Sling satchel from left shoulder to right hip; close flap with button.
  6. Pose kitty holding the framed painting in the right hand; place easel by the feet.

Finishing Touches / QC Checklist

  • Eyes level, 10 sts apart; muzzle centered and lightly stuffed; nose and smile stitched cleanly.
  • Ears symmetrical with a slight outward tilt; beret sits low but not covering the eyes.
  • Tee hem lands just above the trouser ruffle; palette badge dots bright and round.
  • Trouser belt knot centered; cuffs evenly rolled; legs parallel.
  • Shoes snug; straps flat; sole color visible.
  • Strap crosses chest at a diagonal; bag rests on the right hip.
  • Painting visible; easel stable; overall height ~25–26 cm.

Pattern Notes

  • Keep all toy pieces at tight gauge (US 2) so stuffing doesn’t show; use invisible decreases (ssk on left slopes; k2tog on right) for smooth shaping.
  • Stuff as you go—head and feet firmer than limbs for stability.
  • Duplicate stitch is ideal for the palette badge and the red phone box on the mini canvas; weave in ends on WS.
  • For a child-friendly version, embroider the button and sew the satchel flap closed.
  • If you need extra stability while photographing, place a hidden coin in each shoe before sewing to the feet.
