The “Fly Agaric” Mushroom House – Free Crochet Pattern

Step into a world of enchantment and fairy folklore with “The Fly Agaric” Mushroom House. This whimsical caravan design draws inspiration from the iconic Amanita muscaria mushroom, instantly recognizable by its vibrant red cap and white polka dots. Unlike traditional campers, this vehicle embraces the organic, rounded shapes of the forest floor, transforming a standard mobile home into a magical dwelling suitable for a woodland sprite or a mycology enthusiast.

The exterior is a striking display of high-contrast “Fairy-Core” aesthetics. The body of the caravan mimics the creamy white stalk of a mushroom, while the roof acts as the cap—a brilliant scarlet red adorned with raised, textured white spots. The interior is a maximalist celebration of fungi. The floor is not just carpeted; it is a living mossy bed sprouting mushrooms of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Furniture is crafted from decaying tree stumps, providing a rustic place to study a tiny mycology book or consult a mushroom-picking basket. Above, the lighting is provided by magical firefly lanterns. Outside, a polite green frog shields himself from the dew with a lotus leaf umbrella, waiting by the door amongst the ferns. This project is a fantasy come to life.

To capture the specific “muffin-top” curve of a mushroom cap and ensure the caravan walls do not collapse under the weight of the heavy roof, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique is absolutely mandatory. It provides the architectural rigidity needed to create the curved, organic silhouette while keeping the structure hollow for the detailed interior. We will alternate between a standard hook for the main shell and a precision micro-hook for the tiny fungi, the frog, and the delicate fireflies.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is best for structure and sheen).

Scarlet Red: The mushroom cap (roof).

Cream/Off-White: The stalk (walls), mushroom spots, gills.

Bark Brown: Tree stump furniture, floor base.

Moss Green: Interior floor texture, ferns.

    Frog Green: The frog character.

Glow-in-the-Dark or Neon Yellow: Firefly lanterns, glowing mushrooms.

    Black: Tires, eyes.

  • Hooks:

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the caravan shell, floor, and roof.

1.0mm – 1.25mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the tiny mushrooms, frog, book, and fireflies.

  • Structure: 7-8 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, green floral wire (essential for the lotus leaf and ferns), fabric glue, tapestry needle, small beads.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain

  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • FLO: Front Loop Only
  • Sl st: Slip Stitch
  • Popcorn St: 5 dc in one st, close to form a bump (for the roof spots).

Part 1: The Mushroom Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm.

1. The Mossy Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Brown (Bottom) and Moss Green (Top).

  1. Row 1: Ch 28. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (27)
  2. Row 2-42: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4.5″ x 7″).

Texture Tip: For the Green panel, work in Loop Stitch or use a textured yarn to mimic moss/grass.

  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Stalk Shell (The Body)

This forms the walls. Use Cream/Off-White to look like a mushroom stem.

Panel A: Exterior (Cream)

  • Row 1: Ch 95 (Length to cover Left + Back + Right). Sc across.
  • Rows 2-30: Sc across.

Shaping: To give it a slightly organic “stalk” feel, you can work a few rows of Increases and Decreases at the sides to make it bulge slightly, but a straight box is easier for beginners using the sandwich method.

  • Window Cutouts: Create rounded, irregular window openings on the side walls to look like holes eaten by caterpillars.

Panel B: Interior (Cream or Pale Brown)

  • Use Cream. Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel to close the back.

3. The Red Mushroom Cap (The Roof)

Use Bright Red. This needs to overhang the walls like a real mushroom cap.

  • Base Panel: Crochet a large rectangle that is wider and longer than the caravan body footprint.

Pattern: Ch 35. Sc 50 rows. (Adjust to fit your gauge; it needs to drape over the edges).

  • The Spots (Texture):

Option A (Popcorns): As you crochet the red panel, randomly work Popcorn Stitches in White yarn (carrying the white yarn behind the red).

Option B (Appliqué – Recommended): Crochet 15-20 separate White circles (MR 6, Inc to 12) and sew them onto the red roof. This gives a cleaner “raised” look.

  • Assembly: Cut a piece of plastic canvas slightly curved (or heat-bent). Sandwich it inside the Red panel and a Cream underside panel. Sew this roof onto the top of the walls, allowing it to overhang significantly on all sides.

Part 2: The Mycology Interior

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.0mm – 1.25mm Hook for maximum detail.

1. Tree Stump Furniture

  • Stump Table:

Top: Light Brown. MR 6 sc, Inc to 24. (Wood rings).

Sides: Dark Brown. In BLO, Sc around for 10 rows.

Bark Texture: Work *FPsc, Sc* to create ridges.

Roots: Ch 4 at the base, sl st back to create spreading roots.

  • Stump Stools: Make smaller versions (Inc to 12). Place around the table.

2. The Mushroom Garden (Floor)

Make 10-15 tiny mushrooms to glue all over the floor.

  • Red Cap Mushroom:

Cap: Red. MR 5 sc, Inc to 10. Sc 2 rounds.

Stem: White. Ch 4, Sc back. Sew cap to stem.

  • Glowing Mushroom:

Cap: Neon Yellow/Glow yarn. MR 4 sc, Inc to 8. (Tiny cone).

Stem: White thread. Thin and tall.

  • Brown Button Mushroom:

Cap: Brown. MR 6 sc. Flattened.

3. Firefly Lanterns

  • Body: Neon Yellow/Gold. MR 4 sc. Sl st to close. (Glowing butt).
  • Wings: Black thread. Ch 3 loops.
  • Hanging: Attach a fine thread to the firefly and suspend 3-4 of them from the interior ceiling at different heights.

4. Accessories

  • Mycology Book:

Cover: Dark Green. Ch 6, Sc 4 rows.

Pages: White. Ch 5, Sc 4 rows.

Detail: Embroider a tiny mushroom on the cover. Place on the stump table.

  • Picking Basket:

Basket: Tan. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. BLO Sc 3 rounds. Handle: Ch 8.

    Fill: Put 3 micro-mushrooms inside.

Part 3: The Exterior & The Frog

1. The Frog with Lotus Leaf

Use 1.0mm Hook.

  • Frog Body: Green. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 3 rounds. Dec to 6. Stuff.
  • Head: Green. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 2 rounds.

Eyes: Ch 2 bobbles on top of the head. Sew head to body.

  • Limbs: Green. Ch 5 chains. Sc back. Make 4. Sew in a sitting pose.
  • Lotus Leaf Umbrella:

Leaf: Dark Green. MR 6 sc. *Ch 3, Dc, Ch 3, Sl st* repeat 6 times to make a radial, scalloped leaf.

Stem: Green floral wire. Glue to the center of the leaf.

Pose: Bend the wire so the frog is holding the stem, shielding himself.

2. Ferns

  • Frond: Green. Ch 15.

Leaves: Work back down the chain: *Ch 3, sl st in same ch (Picot), sl st in next chain*. Repeat down the spine.

Wire: Crochet over a thin wire so the fern stands up. Make 6-8 ferns. Glue them around the wheel arches and the base of the caravan.

3. Wheels

Use 2.5mm Hook.

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Wood Brown (to look like wooden cart wheels). MR 6 sc.
  • Sew to sides.

4. Hitch

  • Assembly: Cream. Crochet a small loop hitch covered in a tiny green vine.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the Cream body is rigid and the Red Roof overhangs properly like a mushroom cap. The white spots on the roof should be distinct and raised.
  2. Interior Landscaping:
    • Glue the Tree Stump Table and Stools in the center.
    • “Plant” the varied mushrooms all over the floor, clustering them in corners and around the furniture.
    • Place the Mycology Book on the table.
    • Set the Basket near the door.
    • Hang the Firefly Lanterns carefully.
  3. Exterior Scene:
    • Glue the Ferns around the wheels to integrate the caravan with the “forest floor.”
    • Position the Frog with his Lotus Leaf sitting on the doorstep or hitch.
