Materials and Tools
To create your own garden mouse and their accessories, you will need the following materials. The finished size may vary depending on your individual tension and yarn choices, but using DK weight yarn usually results in a mouse approximately 9-10 inches tall in a sitting position.
- Yarn: DK (Double Knitting) or Light Worsted weight yarn in the following colors:
- Grey (approx. 50g for the mouse body, head, limbs, and tail)
- Denim Blue or Slate Blue (approx. 30g for the overalls)
- Light Brown/Tan (approx. 15g for the work shoes)
- Variegated Green/Floral patterned yarn (approx. 20g for the bucket hat – note: the photo shows a fabric hat, but this pattern includes instructions for a crochet version mimicking the shape and style)
- Small amounts of Orange and Green (for carrots)
- Small amounts of Dark Red/Magenta, White, and Green (for the radish)
- A scrap of Pink yarn (for embroidering the nose)
- Crochet Hook: Size C (2.75mm) or D (3.25mm) hook. Choose a hook size smaller than recommended for your yarn to ensure tight stitches so the stuffing doesn’t show through.
- Safety Eyes: One pair of 9mm black safety eyes.
- Stuffing: High-quality polyester fiberfill.
- Notions: Tapestry needle for sewing parts together and weaving in ends, stitch markers, scissors, and sewing pins to help with assembly.
- Extras: Two small (approx. 10mm-12mm) wooden buttons for the overall straps. Sewing thread and needle to attach buttons. (Note: The wicker basket and miniature metal garden tools shown in the reference image are props and are not included in this crochet pattern).
Pattern Notes
- This pattern is worked primarily in continuous spirals. Do not join rounds with a slip stitch unless specifically instructed to do so (like on the shoe soles). Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.
- Stuff the pieces firmly as you work, particularly the muzzle, head, and body, to ensure the mouse holds its shape well over time.
- The overalls and hat are designed to be removable. The shoes can be sewn on or left removable depending on your preference.

Part 2: The Outfit & Accessories
Gardener’s Overalls
Using Denim Blue yarn. The overalls are worked from the bottom up, starting with two separate pant legs that are joined.
Pant Legs (Make 2):
- Ch 20. Join with a sl st to the first ch to form a circle, being careful not to twist the chain.
- Rnd 1-6: sc in each st around. (20)
- Fasten off the first leg. Do not fasten off the second leg.
Torso of Overalls:
- Rnd 7 (Joining): Sc in the next 10 sts of the second leg (the one still on hook). Ch 2. Pick up the first leg, insert hook into any stitch and sc. Work 19 more sc around the first leg. Sc 2 along the chain. Sc the remaining 10 sts of the second leg. Sc 2 along the other side of the chain. (44 sc + 4 chains = 48 sts total area)

- Row 2-6: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (10)
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Straps and Finishing:
- Rejoin Blue yarn at the back of the overalls waistband, roughly aligned with where a strap should go. Chain roughly 20-22 stitches (ensure it’s long enough to go over the mouse’s shoulder to the front bib). Sc in the second ch from hook and back down the chain. Sl st to the back waistband to secure. Fasten off. Repeat for the second strap on the other side.
- Put the overalls on the mouse. Bring straps over the shoulders to the front bib. Using needle and thread, sew the wooden buttons onto the front corners of the bib, going through the straps underneath to secure them in place.
- Front Pocket: Ch 7. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6). Turn. Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc across (6). Fasten off, leaving a tail. Sew this square onto the center of the front bib.
Work Shoes (Make 2)
Using Light Brown yarn. The sole is worked in joined rounds, the upper shoe in continuous spirals.
- Rnd 1: Ch 6. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in the last ch. Working down the other side of the chain: sc 3, 2 sc in the last stitch (same space as the starting sc). Join with sl st to first sc. (12)

Garden Veggies
Carrot (Make as many as you like):
- Using Orange yarn. 1. 4 sc in MR. 2. [inc, sc 1] twice (6). 3. sc around. 4. [inc, sc 2] twice (8). 5-7. sc around. 8. [dec, sc 2] twice (6). Stuff lightly. Dec to close. Cut short lengths of Green yarn and loop them through the top for leafy greens.
Radish (Make 1 or 2):
- Start with Dark Red/Magenta yarn. 1. 6 sc in MR. 2. inc around (12). 3. [inc, sc 1] around (18). 4-6. sc around. Change to White yarn. 7. [dec, sc 1] around (12). Stuff firmly. 8. dec around (6). Fasten off and close hole. Add Green yarn loops to the top red part for leaves.
Assembly
- Sew the completed head securely onto the neck opening of the body using the long yarn tail from the body. Add a little extra stuffing into the neck area as you sew to prevent it from being floppy.
- Sew the flattened arms to the sides of the body, positioning them just below the neck seam.
- Sew the tail to the lower back of the body, centered just above where the mouse sits.
- Dress your mouse: Pull the overalls onto the body, bringing the straps over the shoulders. Slip the work shoes onto the feet. Place the garden hat on the head.
- Optional: You can sew the shoes or hat in place if you prefer them not to be removable.
- Place the carrots and radish in your miniature basket (if using one) and set the scene for your hardworking little gardener!
