The Matchgirl Puppy – Free Crochet Pattern

This sweet Light Grey Puppy features a gentle expression and soft, floppy ears tucked safely away from the cold. She is dressed in a charming, vintage-inspired ensemble that speaks of a humble but happy life. Her dress is a masterpiece of “patchwork,” created with squares of chocolate brown, plum red, and slate grey, reminiscent of a beloved family quilt. To keep her warm, she wears a thick, Dark Red wool shawl wrapped snugly around her shoulders and a traditional Babushka headscarf tied securely under her chin. Her feet are toasty in rustic clogs lined with soft sheepskin.

She carries a woven bamboo-style basket filled with matchboxes, but she isn’t just selling them; she’s sharing the light. In her paw, she holds a single match, its flame burning bright with golden yarn, symbolizing warmth and joy. Trotting faithfully by her side is a pristine White Goose, her partner in this winter adventure. This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters who enjoy colorwork and creating detailed, storytelling accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the puppy body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished puppy stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The patchwork dress requires consistent tension to ensure the color changes lie flat.

Construction Overview

The puppy is constructed in pieces. The legs are made first and joined to form the body. The head is a modified sphere with a muzzle. The outfit is the star of this pattern: The dress is created using a color-block technique to simulate patches without sewing dozens of tiny squares together. The shawl is a simple textured wrap. The headscarf is a triangle shape. The shoes are made with a fuzzy lining. The accessories—basket, match, and goose—are detailed miniatures.
