The Dutch Tulip Piggy – Free Crochet Pattern

Our lovely piggy features a soft, blush pink complexion and a friendly, rounded face. She is dressed in a meticulously detailed traditional Dutch folk costume. Her outfit includes a stunning floor-length skirt in a deep, rich navy blue, paired with a structured black corset-style bodice featuring lace-up detailing. Over this, she wears a pristine white apron with a delicate lace trim, perfect for keeping her dress clean while tending to the garden.

Her head is adorned with the iconic white Dutch Bonnet (or hulst), characterized by its winged, pointed sides. On her feet, she wears rustic brown clogs, known as klompen, essential for walking in the fields. She carries a vibrant red tulip, the symbol of her homeland, and is accompanied by a tiny, spotted black and white dairy cow companion. This pattern is a joy for intermediate crocheters who love cultural costumes and intricate miniatures.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the pig body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished pig stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The clothing is designed to be removable, allowing for dress-up play. The accessories are miniature scale.

Construction Overview

The pig is constructed in pieces. The legs are made first and joined to form the body. The head is round with a sewn-on snout. The costume is the highlight: the dress mimics the layered look of a skirt and bodice. The apron is a separate piece tied at the waist. The Dutch bonnet requires shaping to achieve the “winged” look. The clogs are shaped to look like wooden shoes. The accessories—tulip and mini cow—are detailed miniatures.
