The Strawberry Picnic Cow – Free Crochet Pattern

This adorable bovine features a classic coat of warm brown with a creamy white face patch and muzzle. She is dressed for the occasion in a spirited Red and White striped dress, reminiscent of a classic gingham picnic blanket. To ward off the cool breeze in the shade of the fruit trees, she wears a cropped Deep Green bolero jacket, the color of fresh strawberry leaves.

Her accessories are meticulously crafted: a floral headband featuring white blossoms and tiny red berries, and jaunty red T-strap shoes. She carries the fruits of her labor—a jar of strawberry jam covered with a rustic cloth lid—and a delicious triangle sandwich for lunch. However, she isn’t dining alone; a tiny, industrious Ant wearing his very own sun hat has come along to join the feast. This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters who love storytelling through fiber art.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the cow body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished cow stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The clothing is designed to be removable, adding to the charm and playability of the doll.

Construction Overview

The cow is constructed in pieces. The head is a sphere with a distinct color change for the white blaze on the face. The snout is a separate oval sewn onto the face. The body is formed by joining the legs, which feature integrated shoes and socks. The dress is worked from the waist up for the bodice and waist down for the skirt, utilizing color changes to create the striped/gingham effect. The bolero is a separate piece worked flat. The accessories—sandwich, jam jar, and ant—are detailed miniatures.
