The Mimosa & Chick Bunny – Knitting

The Mimosa & Chick Bunny is a celebration of spring, sunshine, and the delicate beauty of the mimosa flower. This exquisite character features a soft oatmeal-colored body dressed in a vibrant ensemble of sage green and sun-drenched yellow. Her dress is adorned with textured yellow bobbles representing mimosa blossoms, paired with a cozy yellow cardigan that features tiny, hand-knitted chick motifs. To complete her look, she wears a playful polka-dot headband and dainty yellow Mary Janes. She is accompanied by a fluffy golden chick and a small wicker basket filled with colorful eggs. For those who wish to buy high-quality materials, choosing premium wool or alpaca blends will ensure this bunny remains a soft, durable heirloom. When you purchase specific yarns for this project, you are investing in a unique piece of art that brings warmth and joy to any collection.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Essential Materials and Tools

To achieve a result that is 100% accurate to the image, selecting the correct fibers and tools is paramount. This project requires a dense, clean finish, which is best achieved with a high-quality DK (Double Knitting) weight yarn. I recommend using a wool-cotton blend for the clothing to provide structure, and a soft wool or acrylic for the bunny body.

  • Yarn Colors:
    • Oatmeal or Soft Beige: 100g (Bunny body)
    • Mimosa Green (Sage): 50g (Dress)
    • Sunshine Yellow: 50g (Cardigan, Headband, Shoes, Chick)
    • Pure White: Small amount (Headband dots, Cardigan details)
    • Pastel Pink and Sky Blue: Small amounts (Basket eggs)
    • Orange Scrap: (Chick beak)
  • Needles: US 2.5 (3.0mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles for magic loop. Using a slightly smaller needle size ensures the stuffing stays hidden.
  • Notions: 9mm black safety eyes, polyester fiberfill stuffing, tapestry needle, stitch markers, and two tiny yellow buttons for the cardigan.
  • Special Fiber: For the chick, a mohair or “eyelash” yarn held with standard yellow yarn adds that realistic fluffy texture.

Bunny Foundation: The Legs

The bunny is constructed from the bottom up, ensuring a stable base for the sitting position seen in the photograph. We will start with the feet and work our way to the body.

Right Leg Construction

Using Oatmeal yarn, cast on 10 stitches. Join in the round.
Rnd 1: kfb in every stitch (20 sts).
Rnd 2: *k1, kfb* repeat around (30 sts).
Rnds 3-8: k all sts.
Rnd 9 (Shape Toe): k10, (k2tog) 5 times, k10 (25 sts).
Rnd 10: k10, (k2tog) 3 times, k9 (22 sts).
Rnds 11-35: k all sts. Stuff the foot area very firmly, ensuring the toe is rounded. Stuff the leg moderately to allow for flexibility.

Left Leg Construction

Repeat the same process as the right leg. After finishing Round 35, do not break the yarn. We will use this working yarn to join both legs and begin the torso.

The Bunny Torso

Rnd 36 (Joining): k across 22 sts of the left leg, cast on 4 stitches for the crotch area, k across 22 sts of the right leg, cast on 4 stitches. (52 sts total).
Rnds 37-45: k all sts. This builds the rounded hips.
Rnd 46: *k11, k2tog* around (48 sts).
Rnds 47-53: k all sts.

Rnd 65: *k3, k2tog* around (24 sts). This forms the neck. Stuff the body very firmly at this stage, focusing on the belly and hips.

The Bunny Head and Face

The head requires careful shaping to create the broad, gentle cheeks and the tapered bridge of the nose. We continue directly from the neck stitches.

Rnd 66: *k2, m1* around (32 sts).
Rnd 67: *k3, m1* around (40 sts).
Rnd 68: *k4, m1* around (48 sts).
Rnd 69: *k5, m1* around (56 sts).

Rnd 87: k all sts.
Rnd 88: *k4, k2tog* around (40 sts).
Rnd 89: k all sts.

Rnd 92: *k1, k2tog* around (16 sts).

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

The secret to a 100% accurate character lies in the final assembly. Begin by centering the head on the neck and sewing securely. The ears should be placed high on the crown, allowing the headband to sit snugly in front of them.

Face: Use brown embroidery thread to create a small “Y” shape for the nose and mouth. The mouth should be positioned slightly lower than the eyes to create a sweet, innocent expression. Use a very light touch of pink cosmetic blush to the cheeks, blending in circular motions to mimic the soft glow seen in the photo.

Dress the bunny in her sage green dress first, followed by the yellow shoes. Tie the headband securely, ensuring the bow is asymmetrical for a more natural look. Finally, place the yellow cardigan over her shoulders. The fluffy chick can be placed next to her feet, and the basket of eggs positioned nearby. Ensure all yarn ends are woven in deeply so they do not protrude.

Detailed Care and Maintenance

Because this project utilizes intricate bobbles, 3D chick motifs, and delicate embroidery, proper care is essential to maintain its beauty over time. This bunny is an heirloom-quality piece that requires gentle handling.

Washing the Character

Hand washing is highly recommended. Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle detergent specifically formulated for wool or delicate knitwear. Submerge the bunny slowly, avoiding aggressive scrubbing which can cause pilling or flatten the mimosa bobbles. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.

To dry, place the bunny between two clean, thick towels and press gently to remove excess moisture. Never wring or twist the doll, as this will distort the internal stuffing and the knitted structure. Lay flat on a drying rack in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which can fade the vibrant Mimosa Green and Sunshine Yellow yarns. Use a fabric softener during the final rinse if you want the fibers to remain exceptionally soft.

Professional Finishing Tips

If the mimosa bobbles on the dress become flattened during storage or cleaning, you can gently reshape them using your fingers or a small knitting needle to “pop” them back out. For the fluffy chick, a soft-bristled brush (like a clean toothbrush) can be used to gently fluff the mohair fibers back into a downy state. Always store your knitted characters in a dust-free environment, such as a glass-fronted cabinet, to preserve the clarity of the colors and the integrity of the stitches. By following these steps, your Mimosa & Chick Bunny will remain a cherished masterpiece for years to come.
