The Granny Square Chic Bunny – Free Knitting Pattern

The Granny Square Chic Bunny is a heartwarming tribute to the timeless tradition of handmade crafts. She embodies the cozy, nostalgic aesthetic that has been passed down through generations of makers. This bunny is a celebration of color and comfort, dressed in an outfit that looks like it came straight from a beloved heirloom blanket.

Her standout piece is a spectacular dress featuring a skirt designed to mimic the look of classic “Granny Squares”—colorful blocks of yarn framed in black, creating a vibrant mosaic effect. To balance the busyness of the skirt, she wears a sophisticated burgundy cardigan that adds a touch of warmth and elegance. Her hair is swept back with a wide headband knitted in a matching granny-style pattern, and she wears simple, practical black ballet flats.

She is a maker herself, holding a miniature wooden crochet hook and a tiny, unfinished square in progress. Resting peacefully by her side is a Calico cat, curled up on a pile of leftover yarn squares. This pattern is perfect for using up scrap yarn and creating a truly unique, artistic toy.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Finished Height: Approximately 14–15 inches (36–38 cm) from feet to ear tips.

Construction Overview

  • Bunny: Worked in the round from the feet up. Black ballet flats are integrated into the leg knitting. Legs join to form the body and head. Arms and ears are knitted separately and attached.
  • Dress: The “Granny Square” effect is achieved by knitting vertical strips of color blocks separated by black garter ridges. These strips are then seamed together using black yarn to create the grid look.
  • Cardigan: Worked flat from the neck down (raglan style).
  • Headband: A single strip of color blocks framed in black.
  • Accessories: The cat is a curled organic shape; the hook and unfinished square are props.
