The “Strawberry Patch” Garden – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to the sweetest spot in the miniature world! The “Strawberry Patch” Garden is a vibrant, mouth-watering creation that moves away from the domestic kitchen theme and dives straight into the soil of realistic farming. This caravan is a celebration of the harvest, designed to look like a giant, ripe strawberry nestled in the garden. The exterior is a bold Strawberry Red, speckled with sunny Yellow seeds, while the roof is overgrown with a tangle of lush green vines and leaves, creating a living canopy.

Peer inside the open wall to discover a bustling greenhouse environment. The interior is maximized with vertical gardening: hanging pots and long soil troughs are overflowing with botanical accurate strawberry plants. You will crochet serrated green leaves, delicate five-petaled white flowers, runners trailing down the walls, and berries in various stages of ripeness—from tart green to juicy red. The scene is stocked with farming essentials: a harvest basket brimming with fruit, a jar of organic fertilizer, pruning shears, and a gardener’s straw hat resting on a bench. Outside, a cheeky, chubby-cheeked Chipmunk has stolen a prize berry, standing on a patch of soil planted with even more crops. This project is a delicious challenge in texture and detail.

To support the weight of the hanging pots and the dense “vine” roof, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique creates the rigid, box-like walls necessary for a high-quality display piece that won’t sag under the weight of its own lush vegetation. We will alternate between a standard hook for the caravan shell and a precision micro-hook for the tiny seeds, berries, and the chipmunk.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is best for the fruit shine and leaf definition).

Strawberry Red: Main exterior walls, ripe berries.

Seed Yellow: Wall dots/seeds, flower centers.

Vine Green: Roof vines, leaves, stems, unripe berries.

Soil Brown: Floor, troughs, exterior garden bed.

    White: Strawberry flowers.

Chipmunk Colors: Golden Brown, Dark Brown (stripes), White (belly).

    Beige/Straw: Harvest basket, hat.

    Silver/Grey: Pruning shears, jar lid.

    Black: Tires, chipmunk eyes.

  • Hooks:

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the caravan shell, floor, and troughs.

1.0mm – 1.25mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the tiny berries, flowers, shears, and chipmunk.

  • Structure: 7-8 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, green floral wire (essential for posing runners and stems), fabric glue, tapestry needle.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)

Part 1: The Strawberry Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Garden Soil Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Soil Brown.

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two brown panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Red “Seeded” Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the Left Wall, Roof Base, and Right Wall. The texture is key.

Panel A: Exterior (Strawberry Red)

  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Side + Roof + Right Side). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-35: Sc across.
  • Window Cutouts: On the side wall sections, create rectangular window openings to let light onto the plants (Ch 10, Sk 10).
  • The “Seeds” (Embroidery): Before assembly, thread a needle with Bright Yellow yarn. Embroider small vertical stitches (“V” shapes or French Knots) evenly spaced across the Red sections of the panel. This mimics the achenes (seeds) of a strawberry.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Light Green or White)

  • Use a pale color to reflect light inside the “greenhouse.” Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers using Red yarn.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel (Red exterior with seeds, Light interior) to close the back.

  • Roof Leaves (Large): Ch 10. Sc, Hdc, Dc, Tr, Dc, Hdc, Sc. Make 20+ large leaves. Sew them densely onto the roof, overlapping them to create a “cap” effect like the top of a strawberry. Let some hang over the eaves.

  • Soil Mound: Soil Brown. Create an irregular flat shape (sc rows, inc/dec randomly).
  • Plants: Sew 2-3 full Strawberry Plants (Leaves, Flowers, Berries) directly onto this mound. Place it beside the caravan.

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Grey. MR 6 sc.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the Red shell is rigid and the Yellow seeds are visible. The Green Roof should look thick and overgrown, not flat.
  2. Interior Cultivation:
    • Glue Troughs to the floor. “Plant” them densely.
    • Hang the Pots from the ceiling.
    • Position the Runners so they trail naturally over the shelves.
    • Place the Harvest Basket full of fruit in the center.
