The “Grape Harvest” – Free Crochet Pattern

Pour yourself a glass of creativity and welcome to the most sophisticated stop on our miniature journey! The “Grape Harvest” is a charming tribute to the art of viticulture and classic fables. Designed to resemble a giant, repurposed oak wine barrel, the exterior features a warm, woody texture reminiscent of aged staves. The roof is a living canopy, blanketed in lush green grape leaves and twisting vines that spill over the edges, blending nature with architecture.

Step inside (or rather, peer through the open wall) to discover a fully stocked wine cellar. The ceiling is heavy with hanging clusters of grapes in rich purples and fresh greens, created using the textured bobble stitch. Two rustic oak barrels anchor the room, accompanied by miniature wine bottles, delicate “glass” goblets, and harvesting tools like shears and a wicker basket. Outside, a scene straight from Aesop’s fables plays out: a clever Red Fox stands on his tiptoes, reaching for a cluster of low-hanging fruit, while a small tasting table nearby offers a wheel of cheese and fresh grapes. This project is a masterpiece of texture and storytelling.

This project creates a structure that mimics a heavy wooden barrel. To ensure the walls maintain their curve yet stay rigid enough to support the heavy, leafy roof, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique is non-negotiable for achieving the clean, boxy-yet-organic silhouette of the winery. We will alternate between a standard hook for the main structure and a precision micro-hook for the tiny grapes, tools, and the fox.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is best for the “glass” and grape definition).

Oak Brown/Tan: Main exterior walls, door/ramp, table.

Dark Coffee Brown: Barrel hoops, interior floor, wine bottles.

Vine Green: Leaves, vines, green grapes.

    Royal Purple: Purple grapes.

    Fox Orange/Rust: The Fox.

    Black: Fox legs/ears, tires.

White: Fox tail tip, cheese interior.

Pale Grey/Translucent White: Wine glasses (to mimic clear glass).

    Silver: Shears.

    Cheese Yellow: Cheese rind.

  • Hooks:

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the caravan shell, floor, and roof base.

1.5mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the bobble grapes, wine bottles, glasses, tools, and the fox.

  • Structure: 7-8 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, craft wire (for the fox’s pose and vine shaping), fabric glue, tapestry needle.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • Sl st: Slip Stitch
  • Bobble: (Yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) x 4 times in same st. Yarn over, pull through all loops on hook. (Creates the grape).
  • Picot: Ch 3, sl st in first ch.

Part 1: The Oak Barrel Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm and Oak Brown Yarn.

1. The Wood-Plank Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Oak Brown.

  1. Row 1: Ch 28. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (27)
  2. Row 2-42: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4.5″ x 7″).
  3. Texture Detail: To mimic floorboards, you can surface slip stitch vertical lines across the top panel before assembly.
  4. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Barrel-Stave Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the walls. To look like a barrel, the texture must run horizontally.

Panel A: Exterior (Oak Brown)

  • Row 1: Ch 95 (Length to cover Left Side + Roof + Right Side). Sc across.
  • Row 2-35: Work in BLO (Back Loop Only) for every row. This creates distinct horizontal ridges that mimic the wooden staves of a barrel.
  • Window Cutouts: On the side wall sections, create square window openings.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Dark Coffee Brown)

  • Use Dark Brown to create a shadowy, cellar-like atmosphere inside. Standard Sc (no ridges needed). Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

The Fold-Down Ramp (Door):

  • Make a separate sandwich panel (Oak Brown, BLO texture) that fits the front opening.
  • Sew the bottom edge to the floor so it hinges downwards to create a patio.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter using Oak Brown.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel (Oak BLO exterior, Dark interior) to close the back.

  • Row 3: Ch 1, Bobble in first sc, Bobble in 2nd sc. (2 grapes).
  • Row 4: Ch 1, Sc across (3 sc). Turn.
  • Row 5: Bobble, Bobble, Bobble. (3 grapes).
  • Fasten off. You now have a triangle of grapes.
  • Stem: Attach Brown yarn to the top, Ch 5.

2. Grape Leaves

Make 30+ leaves in Vine Green.

  • Pattern: Ch 6.

Rnd 1: Sl st in 2nd ch, Sc, Hdc, Dc, (Dc, Ch 2, Dc) in last ch. Work down other side: Dc, Hdc, Sc, Sl st.

Edging: Work *Sc, Ch 2, Sc* around the leaf to give it a serrated edge.

3. Vines

  • Thick Vine: Brown. Ch 50. Sc back down. Twist it as you sew.
  • Curly Tendrils: Green. Ch 12. 2 Sc in each ch. (Coils up).

Assembly:

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
