The “Fuchsia” Hanging Garden – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to a whimsical world of trailing blooms and fluttering wings! The “Fuchsia” Hanging Garden caravan is a vibrant tribute to one of nature’s most elegant flowers. Often called “ballerina flowers” due to their flared skirts and dancing shapes, Fuchsias are the stars of this mobile garden. The exterior of the caravan features a bold, eye-catching Magenta and White color scheme, designed to complement the hanging baskets that drape from the roof.

Step closer, and you will see a maximalist interior entirely dedicated to propagation and care. The ceiling is a grid of hanging baskets, showcasing the classic bi-color Fuchsia: bright pink outer sepals and deep, royal purple inner petals with long, delicate stamens. To keep this garden thriving, we have included essential tools: a bottle of liquid fertilizer, long-reach pruning shears, and a specialized red feeder to attract pollinators. Outside, the scene is completed with a tiny, iridescent hummingbird caught in mid-flight and a relaxing white swing chair for enjoying the view.

This is a structural project that requires patience and precision. To support the weight of the many hanging baskets on the roof and ceiling, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This ensures the roof does not sag and the walls remain crisp and upright. We will use a standard hook for the caravan body and a fine micro-hook for the delicate flower stamens and the hummingbird.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is best for the flowers to give them a slight sheen).

Magenta/Hot Pink: Lower exterior walls, fuchsia sepals.

Clean White: Upper exterior walls, interior lining, swing chair.

Deep Purple: Fuchsia inner petals (corolla).

Leaf Green: Stems, leaves, hummingbird back.

Ruby Red: Hummingbird throat, feeder base.

    Silver/Grey: Pruning shears, chains.

    Beige/Jute: Plant baskets.

    Black: Tires, hummingbird beak.

Part 1: The Caravan Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Garden Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Magenta or Dark Green (for a mossy floor look).

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Magenta & White Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the main body. The color split is key to the design.

Panel A: Exterior (Magenta & White)

  • Start with Magenta.
  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Wall + Roof + Right Wall). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-12: Sc across (Magenta Bottom Section).
  • Change to White.
  • Row 13-35: Sc across (White Top Section & Roof).
  • Window Cutouts: On the side wall sections, create large rectangular windows to let light in for the plants (Ch 12, Sk 12).
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (White)

  • Use White yarn for the entire piece to keep the interior bright and reflective. Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (cutting out the window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers. Use Magenta for the bottom and White for the top.
  • Ceiling Grid: Before bending the U-shape, sew several horizontal lines of White yarn across the interior ceiling section. These will act as loops to hang your baskets later.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

Part 2: The Hanging Fuchsias (The Star Feature)

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.0mm – 1.25mm Hook. These flowers need to be delicate.

1. The Hanging Baskets (Make 8-10)

  • Hangers: Ch 15 (3 strands). Attach evenly to the rim and join at the top.
  • Soil: Dark Brown circle sewn inside the basket.

2. The Fuchsia Blooms

Make 3-4 blooms per basket.

  • Stamens (The Center): Cut 3 short lengths of Pink embroidery floss. Tie knots at one end (anther). Fold them in half and twist.
  • Inner Petals (Corolla): Deep Purple.

Round 1: MR 4 sc around the Stamen threads.

Round 2: (Ch 2, 2 Dc, Ch 2, Sl st) in each sc around. This creates a ruffled purple skirt.

  • Outer Sepals (Calyx): Magenta.

Round 1: Join to top of Purple part. Sc 4.

Round 2: *Ch 5, Sl st back down chain, Sl st in next sc* repeat 4 times.

Shaping: These pink points should curl upwards away from the purple skirt.

  • Stem: Green. Ch 4 attached to the top of the pink calyx.

  • Leaves: *Ch 4, sc, hdc, sc, sl st* along the chain.
  • Assembly: Sew the vines and flower stems into the “Soil” of the baskets.

Part 3: Gardening Accessories

Use Hook Size: 1.25mm.

1. Hummingbird Feeder

  • Base: Ruby Red. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 1 round. (Dish).
  • Bottle: Clear or White. MR 4 sc, Inc to 8. Sc 4 rounds. Dec to 4.

  • Cap: Blue. Small cylinder.

Part 4: The Exterior Scene

1. The Hummingbird

Use 1.0mm Hook. This is micro-crochet.

  • Body: Green. MR 4 sc, Inc to 8. Sc 2 rounds. Dec to 4.
  • Throat: Ruby Red stitches on the chest.

2. White Swing Chair

Use 2.5mm Hook and White yarn.

  • Seat: Ch 8. Sc 8 rows. Sandwich with canvas.
  • Backrest: Ch 8. Sc 8 rows. Sandwich. Sew to seat at an angle.
  • Arms: Ch 10 loops.
  • Frame: Use sturdy craft wire to form an A-frame stand. Wrap the wire tightly with White yarn.
  • Hanging: Use White chains to suspend the chair from the frame. Place this outside the caravan.

3. Wheels

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Silver/Grey. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12.
  • Sew to sides.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the Magenta/White shell is rigid. The hanging baskets add weight to the ceiling, so the U-shape must be very stiff (use double-layer canvas if needed in the roof).
  2. Hanging the Garden:
    • Tie the interior baskets to the ceiling grid. Vary the heights so they fill the space but leave room to see inside.
    • Attach 2-3 baskets to the exterior roof edge.
  3. Accessories:
    • Hang the Hummingbird Feeder inside or near the open door.
    • Place the Fertilizer bottle and Shears on the floor or a small shelf.
  4. The Scene:
    • Position the Swing Chair outside.
    • Mount the Hummingbird so its beak is inside a Fuchsia flower.

Congratulations! You have cultivated a masterpiece. The “Fuchsia” Hanging Garden is a delicate, vibrant celebration of nature, perfect for display.
