The “Mushroom” Fairy House – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to a whimsical corner of the forest! The “Mushroom” Fairy House is a magical playset designed to look like a sturdy toadstool that has been converted into a cozy home. The exterior features a vibrant red stalk and a classic red cap dotted with white spots. On the side, a rustic wooden button creates a charming faux-window detail. The true magic happens when you open the hinged side panel: the interior reveals a fully furnished bedroom. Inside, there is a cozy blue bed with a white pillow and a stunning Lily of the Valley floor lamp. The opening door panel itself acts as a patio, hosting a tiny mushroom tea set and a friendly snail crawling up the wall.

This project creates a structural playset that can stand open or closed. To ensure the walls, floor, and opening door remain rigid and box-like (rather than floppy amigurumi), we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique involves crocheting two flat panels and sandwiching a custom-cut piece of plastic canvas between them, crocheting around the edges to seal it. This is essential for the functionality of this design.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Worsted or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton provides the best definition and durability).

Red: Main exterior walls, mushroom cap, tiny mushroom furniture.

Cream/Off-White: Interior lining, door panel interior, mushroom cap spots, mushroom stalks.

Grass Green: Floors, base of lamp.

Leaf Green: Lamp stalk and leaves.

    Blue: Bedspread.

Dark Brown: Bed frame, exterior window patch.

    Beige/Tan: Snail body, snail shell.

  • Hooks:

3.0mm (Size C/D): For the main house structure (walls, floor, cap).

2.0mm – 2.25mm (Size B): CRITICAL for the miniature furniture, snail, and flowers.

  • Structure: 6-7 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, 1 large wooden button (approx 1 inch), floral wire (for the flower lamp), tapestry needle, fabric glue, stitch markers.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • Sl st: Slip Stitch

Part 1: The House Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 3.0mm. This forms the base cylinder.

1. The Grassy Floor Base

Make 2 identical circles.

  1. Rnd 1: With Grass Green, MR 6 sc.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc 1, Inc) around (18).
  4. Continue increasing by 6 stitches each round until you have a flat circle approximately 5.5 inches in diameter.
  5. Fasten off the first circle. Do not fasten off the second.

Assembly: Cut a circle of plastic canvas slightly smaller than your crochet piece. Sandwich it between the two green circles. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal. This is the floor.

2. The Main House Walls (C-Shape)

The house is a cylinder, but we need a “C” shape to allow for the door opening. We need an Exterior Panel (Red) and an Interior Panel (Cream).

Panel A (Exterior Red):

  • Row 1: Ch 51. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (50)
  • Row 2-35: Sc across. (Adjust height to approx 5 inches).

Panel B (Interior Cream):

  • Repeat the same pattern as Panel A using Cream yarn.

Assembly:

  • Cut a piece of plastic canvas to match the rectangle size.
  • Sandwich the canvas between the Red and Cream panels.
  • Sc around the entire perimeter to seal. Use Red yarn for the outside edges.
  • Bend this panel into a “C” shape and sew the bottom edge to the Green Floor Base. Leave a gap for the door.

3. The Hinged Door Panel

This piece fills the gap in the “C” shape and swings open. It acts as the “Patio” wall.

  • Exterior (Red): Crochet a rectangle that fits the gap in the walls exactly.
  • Interior (Cream): Crochet a matching rectangle.
  • Base Extension (Green): Crochet a small semi-circle or rectangle of Green to match the floor, attached to the bottom of the Cream panel (this is the grass floor for the patio furniture).
  • Sandwich: Place plastic canvas between the Red and Cream/Green panels. Sc around to seal.
  • Hinge: Whipstitch one vertical edge of this door panel to the main “C” wall. Ensure it swings freely.

Part 2: The Mushroom Cap (Roof)

Use Hook Size: 3.0mm.

1. The Red Dome

Use Red Yarn.

  • Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  • Rnd 3: (Sc 1, Inc) around (18).
  • Continue increasing gradually (e.g., every 2nd round) to create a rounded dome shape, not a flat circle. It needs to be wider than the house walls to create an overhang.
  • Work until the diameter is approx 7-8 inches.
  • Rims: Sc without increasing for 3 rounds to curl the edge under slightly.

2. The White Spots (Make 8-10)

Use White Yarn.

  • Large Spot: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Fasten off.
  • Small Spot: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Fasten off.
  • Sew these randomly onto the Red Dome.

3. The Roof Lining

Use Cream Yarn.

  • Crochet a flat circle the same diameter as the opening of the Red Dome.
  • Stuff the dome firmly with fiberfill.
  • Sew the Cream circle to the bottom of the Red Dome to close it.
  • Assembly: Sew the finished Mushroom Cap onto the top rim of the House Walls.

Part 3: The Main Bedroom Interior

Use Hook Size: 3.0mm for furniture.

1. The Cozy Bed

  • Headboard: Dark Brown. Ch 12. Sc 8 rows. (Sandwich with plastic canvas for stiffness).
  • Mattress: White. Ch 10. Sc 15 rows. Make 2, sandwich stuffing between them.
  • Bedspread: Blue. Crochet a rectangle slightly larger than the mattress. Texture: Work in BLO or use a lemon peel stitch (sc, dc) for texture. Sew onto the mattress, folding the top edge down.
  • Pillow: Cream. Ch 6. Sc 4 rows. Fold, sew sides, stuff.
  • Assembly: Glue Headboard to Mattress. Glue bed to the floor inside the main chamber.

2. Lily of the Valley Lamp/Plant

Use 2.0mm Hook and Wire.

  • Stalk: Cut a piece of wire (4 inches). Wrap tightly with Leaf Green yarn. Bend the top into a curve.
  • Leaves: Leaf Green. Ch 12. Sc, Hdc, Dc across middle, Hdc, Sc. Make 2 large leaves. Glue to the base of the stalk.
  • Flowers (Bells): White. MR 4 sc. Inc to 8. Sc 2 rounds. (Sc, ch 2, sl st) in each st around for the ruffled edge. Make 2-3 flowers.
  • Assembly: Hang the white flowers from the curved tip of the green stalk using tiny green chains or glue. Plant the base into a small brown crochet pot (MR 6, Inc to 12, BLO Sc up). Glue next to the bed.

Part 4: The Door Panel “Patio” Details

Use Hook Size: 2.0mm. These items are attached to the swinging door.

1. Mushroom Table & Chairs

  • Table Stalk: Cream. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. BLO Sc around. Sc 4 rounds. Stuff firmly.
  • Table Top: Red. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. White spots embroidered. Sew to stalk.
  • Chairs (Make 2): Cream stalk (smaller, MR 4 sc, Inc to 8). Red seat (MR 6 sc, Inc to 12). tiny backrest (Red, Ch 5, sc back).
  • Assembly: Glue the table and chairs to the green grass section of the door panel.

2. The Wall Snail

  • Shell: Tan/Brown. MR 6 sc. Inc to 12. Sc 10 rounds. Stuff lightly. Roll into a spiral and sew shape.
  • Body: Cream/Beige. Ch 8. Sc back. (Head: MR 4 sc). Sew shell to body.
  • Antennae: Two tiny thread ends stiffened with glue.
  • Placement: Sew or glue the snail high up on the Cream interior wall of the door panel.

Part 5: Exterior Details

Use Hook Size: 3.0mm.

1. The Faux Window & Button

  • Patch: Dark Brown. Ch 8. Sc 8 rows (Square). Or MR…Inc to 24 (Circle).
  • Button: Sew the large wooden button into the center of the brown patch.
  • Assembly: Sew this patch onto the exterior Red wall (the “C” part, not the door).

Final Assembly & Finishing

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the main house stands straight. The plastic canvas in the “Sandwich” walls should hold the weight of the roof.
  2. Hinge Movement: Test the door panel. It should swing open to reveal the snail and mushroom furniture, and close flush against the main wall.
  3. Roof Attachment: Ensure the roof overhang is even all around.
  4. Clean Up: Weave in all ends. Use a needle to fluff up the texture of the green floor if desired.

Congratulations! You have built a magical “Mushroom” Fairy House. This enchanting playset is ready for tiny fairies, forest critters, and imaginative play.
