The “Monstera” Urban Jungle – Free Crochet Pattern

Calling all “Crazy Plant Ladies” and “Plant Dads”! If your home is slowly turning into a botanical garden, this project is designed specifically for you. Welcome to the “Monstera” Urban Jungle Caravan. This miniature travel trailer captures the current obsession with tropical foliage and lush, green living spaces. The exterior is a crisp, clean white, serving as a bright canvas for the cascading Pothos vines that completely take over the roof. The windows feature a unique split-leaf silhouette, hinting at the botanical wonders inside.

Step through the door, and you enter a maximalist paradise. The interior is packed with potted Monsteras sporting large fenestrated leaves, trailing heart-leaf Philodendrons, and resilient Snake Plants. To keep the humidity high for these tropical beauties, we’ve included a miniature humidifier and a vintage bronze misting sprayer. Outside, a playful cat bats at a giant leaf, while a tiered propagation station displays tiny cuttings rooting in water. This pattern is a celebration of life, growth, and the color green.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is highly recommended for the plants to give them a slight sheen and crisp definition).

Clean White: Caravan exterior, interior walls, humidifier.

Plant Greens: You need a variety! Dark Forest Green (Monstera), Variegated Green/Yellow (Pothos), Sage Green, Lime Green.

Earth Tones: Terracotta, Dark Brown (soil), Beige/Jute (baskets/macrame).

    Bronze/Gold: Misting bottle.

    Ginger/Orange: The Cat.

    Wood Brown: Propagation shelf.

    Icy Blue/Clear: Glass jars.

  • Hooks:

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the main caravan structure, floor, and furniture.

1.5mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the tiny plant leaves, propagation jars, and tools.

  • Structure: 6 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, floral wire (essential for posing plant stems), tapestry needle, fabric glue, clear fishing line (for floating shelves or hanging baskets).

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Tr: Treble Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 sc in one st)
  • Dec: Decrease (invisible decrease)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • Sl st: Slip Stitch
  • Picot: Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook.

Part 1: The Greenhouse Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Wood Brown (for a hardwood floor look).

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Aim for a rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size of the crochet piece. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal. This creates a rigid foundation.

2. The Clean White Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. The white color must be pristine to contrast with the green roof.

Panel A: Exterior (White)

  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Side + Roof + Right Side). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-35: Sc across.
  • The “Monstera” Windows: On the side wall sections, we need to create a window shape that mimics a leaf. Instead of a square hole, work the window opening as a wide oval, but create a “bar” of crochet in the middle to look like a leaf vein or split.

Technique: Sc to window start, Ch 12, Skip 12, Sc to end. On the next row, work into the chains. (We will shape the frame later with green trim).

  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (White)

  • Repeat Panel A dimensions. Keep the interior white to reflect light onto the plants.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (cutting out the window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers using White yarn.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

3. The Pothos Roof (Cascading Vines)

Use 2.5mm Hook for the base mesh, 1.5mm for leaves.

Instead of just sewing leaves to the roof, we create a “living roof” cap.

  • Mesh Base: With Dark Green, crochet a net (Ch 5, sk 2, sc) that fits over the roof section. Sew this onto the White roof.
  • The Pothos Vines (Make 15-20 strands):

Using Variegated Green/Yellow yarn: Ch 20 (or 30, or 40 – vary lengths).

Leaf pattern: *Sl st in next ch, (Hdc, Dc, Hdc) in next ch, Sl st in next* repeat down the chain. This creates a string of small leaves.

  • Assembly: Sew the vines onto the Mesh Base, letting long tendrils hang down over the front windshield and the back window. The roof should look completely overgrown.

Part 2: The Urban Jungle Interior (Maximalism)

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.5mm Hook and thin yarn. The detail is in the foliage.

1. The Giant Monstera Deliciosa

  • Pot: Terracotta. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. BLO Sc around. Sc 5 rows.
  • Soil: Brown circle sewn inside.
  • Leaves (Make 5): Green. Ch 10.

Row 1: Sc, Hdc, Dc across.

Row 2 (The Splits): Work around the other side. *Sc, Ch 3, Sk 2, Sc* to create holes/fenestrations.

Wire: Glue a thin green floral wire to the back of each leaf so you can bend them.

  • Assembly: Twist wires together and plant in the pot. Place this in the corner.

2. Heart-Leaf Philodendron (Hanging)

  • Macrame Hanger: Use Cream thread. Cut 8 strands. Knot them together at the base. Place a tiny crochet pot (Beige) inside. Knot strands halfway up. Tie all at top.
  • Vines: Dark Green. Ch 15. *Ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch (Picot), sl st in chain*. Make 3-4 vines draping out of the pot.
  • Hang this from the ceiling.

3. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

  • Pot: Seagrass Basket style (Beige/Jute). MR 6 sc, Inc to 15. Sc 4 rows. Fold rim down.
  • Leaves: Variegated Green/Yellow. Ch 12. Sc back down. Include a wire. Make 4-5 tall, straight spikes.
  • Group them tightly in the basket.

4. Accessories

  • Mini Humidifier: White. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. BLO Sc around. Sc 4 rows. Dec to 12. Ch 3 (spout). Glue a tiny bit of white wool fluff to the spout for “steam.”
  • Bronze Mister: Gold/Bronze yarn.

Bottle: MR 5 sc, Inc to 10. Sc 3 rows. Dec to 5.

Top: Ch 2, Sc (Neck). Ch 3 (Handle/Nozzle).

Part 3: The Exterior Scene

1. The Propagation Station (Tiered Shelf)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm for shelf, 1.5mm for jars.

  • Shelf Frame: Wood Brown.

Shelves: Ch 12, Sc 3 rows. Make 3.

Legs: Ch 15. Sc back. Make 2 ladder-like sides. Glue shelves between the legs.

  • Propagation Jars: Use Icy Blue or Clear yarn.

Jar: MR 4 sc. BLO Sc around. Sc 2 rows. (Tiny cylinder).

Cutting: Glue a single tiny green leaf on a wire stem into the jar.

Make 4-5 jars and arrange them on the shelves.

2. The Playful Cat

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm and Ginger Orange yarn.

  • Body: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 6 rounds. Dec to close.
  • Head: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 4 rounds. Dec to close. Sew to body.
  • Ears: Ch 3, Sc in 2nd ch. Sew to head.
  • Tail: Ch 12, Sc back. Sew to rear, curved upwards.
  • Legs: Ch 5, Sc back. Make 4. Sew to body in a “pouncing” pose.
  • Action: Crochet one large Monstera leaf (loose). Sew it near the cat’s paw so it looks like the cat is batting at it.

3. Exterior Details

  • Wheels: Black tires (24 sc round), White hubcaps. Sew to sides.
  • Hitch: White tube sewn to front.
  • Door Mat: Coarse Brown yarn. Rectangle (Ch 10, Sc 4 rows). Place in front of the door.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the U-shaped shell is sturdy. The plastic canvas core is essential to support the weight of the Pothos vines on the roof.
  2. Greenify the Interior:
    • Glue the large Monstera pot to the floor.
    • Hang the Macrame planter from the ceiling (sew through the interior roof canvas).
    • Place the Snake Plant and Humidifier on the floor.
    • Place the Mister on a small shelf or the floor.
  3. Exterior Styling:
    • Stand the Propagation Shelf next to the caravan.
    • Position the Cat playing with the leaf near the wheel.
    • Adjust the roof vines so they drape artistically over the windows and door frame.

Congratulations! You have grown your own “Monstera” Urban Jungle. This caravan is a breath of fresh air and a perfect gift for the plant lover in your life.
