The “Hydrangea” Cloud – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to a world of soft pastels and fluffy textures! The “Hydrangea” Cloud Caravan is a dream for flower lovers, designed to capture the ethereal beauty of a blooming hydrangea garden after a spring rain. The exterior is a soft, romantic Lilac, flanked by massive, cloud-like bushes of blue and purple blooms. This isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a mobile greenhouse dedicated to the specific needs of these moisture-loving plants.

Step inside to find a maximalist botanical haven. The interior features giant potted hydrangeas composed of hundreds of tiny, individual florets creating perfect spheres of color. Attention to detail is key here, with scientific accessories like Litmus paper for soil testing and bags of specialized blue fertilizer. A cozy white wicker chair invites you to sit and admire the blooms. Outside, a colorful snail creates a slow-motion adventure on a leaf, next to a folded umbrella—because hydrangeas love the rain!

This is a texture-heavy project. To support the weight of the “fluffy” 3D flowers on the exterior walls, we rely strictly on the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This ensures the caravan walls remain straight and do not buckle under the decorations. We will alternate between standard hooks for the structure and micro-hooks for the tedious but rewarding floral details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized recommended for petal definition).

Lilac/Lavender: Main caravan exterior and floor.

Part 1: The Lilac Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Lilac (or light wood color if preferred).

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to size. Sandwich between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Lilac Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. It needs to be very sturdy.

Panel A: Exterior (Lilac)

  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Wall + Roof + Right Wall). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-35: Sc across.
  • Window Cutouts: On the side wall sections, create rectangular windows (Ch 10, Sk 10).
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (White or Pale Lilac)

  • Use White yarn to keep the interior bright for the flowers. Match dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers using Lilac yarn. Sc inside the window frames.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid Lilac/White sandwich panel and sew to the back to close the caravan.

Part 2: The Hydrangea Flowers (The “Cloud” Effect)

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.5mm Hook. This is the most time-consuming part, but creates the “fluffy” look.

1. The Individual Florets (Make… Hundreds!)

Use Periwinkle, Blue, and Purple. Mix colors for a realistic effect.

  • Pattern: MR. *Ch 2, Dc into ring, Ch 2, Sl st into ring* repeat 4 times. (4-petal flower).
  • Tighten the ring. Fasten off.

2. Exterior Bushes

  • Base: Crochet a semi-sphere (MR 6, Inc to 24, Sc rounds) in Green or Blue. Stuff firmly.
  • Assembly: Glue or sew the Individual Florets densely all over the rounded surface of the base. It should look like a solid ball of petals.
  • Leaves: Dark Green. Ch 8. Sc, Hdc, Dc, Hdc, Sc. Make 4-5 leaves.
  • Mounting: Sew the leaves to the caravan wall (under the window), then glue the flower dome on top of the leaves. Do this for both sides.

3. Interior Giant Pots

  • Pot: Terracotta yarn (2.5mm hook). MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. BLO Sc around. Sc 6 rounds. Rim: (Sc, ch 1) around.
  • Flower Ball: Make a full sphere (MR 6, Inc to… 30, Sc rounds, Dec to close) stuffed with fiberfill. Color can be scrap yarn.
  • Covering: Glue the tiny 1.5mm Florets all over the sphere until no base is visible. Create a gradient (Blue on one side, fading to Purple).
  • Glue the sphere onto the Pot.

Part 3: Interior Accessories

Use Hook Size: 1.5mm

1. White Wicker Chair

  • Seat: White. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18.
  • Backrest: Ch 15, Sc back. Work 8 rows. Bend into a curve.
  • Texture: Use a “Crab Stitch” (Reverse Single Crochet) or cross-stitch over the sc fabric to mimic the woven wicker texture.
  • Legs: Ch 6 tightly. Stiffen with glue. Make 4.
  • Arms: Ch 8, arch over the sides.

2. Blue Fertilizer Bags

  • Bag: Bright Blue. Ch 6. Sc 8 rows. Fold in half, sew sides. Stuff lightly.
  • Label: Use White embroidery floss to stitch a square. Use Black floss to stitch tiny “BLUE FERTILIZER” text (or just squiggles).

3. Litmus Paper Booklet

  • Cover: White. Ch 4, Sc 3 rows. Fold like a book.
  • Strips: Inside, glue tiny snips of yellow, orange, and red paper or stiffened yarn to look like test strips.
  • Chart: On the front cover, embroider 4 tiny colored squares (Red, Pink, Blue, Purple) to represent the pH chart.

Part 4: The Exterior Scene

1. The Colorful Snail

Use 1.25mm or 1.5mm Hook.

  • Shell: Use Rainbow/Variegated yarn.

    Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.

    Rnd 2: Inc to 12.

Rnd 3-20: Sc around. Stuff lightly as you go. It forms a long tube.

Coil the tube into a spiral and sew it in place.

  • Body: Yellow/Lime. Ch 10. Sc back (Foot). At the front, Ch 3, Sc for head.
  • Antennae: Ch 2 tiny stalks on head. Bead eyes.
  • Assembly: Glue shell onto body.

2. The Giant Leaf (Snail’s Stage)

Use 2.5mm Hook and Green yarn.

  • Ch 15. Sc, Hdc, Dc across… Inc 3 at end… work back down other side.
  • Work 3 rounds increasing at the ends to make a wide oval leaf.
  • Surface slip stitch a vein down the center.

3. The Umbrella

  • Canopy: Lilac/Blue. MR 6 sc. Inc to 12… Inc to 24. Sc 4 rounds.

Folded Look: Pinch the circle together and wrap a piece of yarn around the middle to keep it closed.

  • Handle: Craft wire. Bend a “J” curve at the bottom. Wrap with Brown/Grey yarn. Insert into the canopy.

4. Wheels

  • Tire: Black (2.5mm hook). MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Silver. MR 6 sc.
  • Sew to the sides of the caravan.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the U-shaped shell is secure. The side walls must be stiff to support the exterior Hydrangea bushes.
  2. Interior Decorating:
    • Glue the Wicker Chair in the corner.
    • Place the Giant Hydrangea Pot in the center back.
    • Stack the Fertilizer Bags and Litmus Paper on the floor or a small shelf.
  3. Exterior Landscaping:
    • Attach the Exterior Hydrangea Bushes under the windows. Add extra leaves for fullness.
    • Place the Giant Leaf on the ground in front of the door. Position the Snail on it.
    • Lean the Umbrella against the side of the caravan (flower lovers are always ready for rain!).
