The “Drum & Percussion” Studio – Free Crochet Pattern

Are you ready to rock? Turn up the volume on your crochet skills with the “Drum & Percussion” Studio! Unlike the cozy tea houses or garden sheds, this caravan is built for rhythm and noise. It is a sleek, mobile recording studio designed in a striking Glossy Black and Metallic Gold color scheme, featuring a cool lightning bolt motif on the side. The interior is a drummer’s paradise, completely soundproofed and centered around a spectacular, full-size (miniature) drum kit with gleaming brass cymbals. Outside, the coolest Gorilla in town, wearing sunglasses, lays down the beat on his bongos.

This is a “Maximalist” miniature project that requires attention to detail, especially for the musical instruments. To ensure the caravan looks sleek and the walls are sturdy enough to hold the acoustic foam panels, we strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). We will switch between a standard hook for the main structure and a precision micro-hook for the drum kit hardware.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton works best for the glossy look).

Black: Upper exterior, interior walls, speakers, gorilla body.

Metallic Gold / Mustard: Lower exterior, cymbals, lightning bolt, drum hardware.

Dark Grey: Acoustic foam panels, floor.

    White/Beige: Drum heads (skins).

    Brown/Wood: Drum shells, drumsticks.

    Silver/Grey: Microphone stands, pedals.

  • Hooks:

2.5mm (Size C/2): For the caravan shell, floor, and gorilla.

1.5mm (Steel Hook): CRITICAL for the drum kit, cymbals, stands, and sunglasses.

  • Structure: 6 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh stiffness).
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, thin craft wire (essential for cymbal stands and sunglasses), tapestry needle, fabric glue, black felt (optional for speaker fronts).

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Part 1: The Studio Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Soundproof Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Dark Grey (to simulate carpet/soundproofing).

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Aim for a rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to size. Sandwich between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Black & Gold Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the walls and roof. We want a sharp, modern division of color.

Panel A: Exterior (Black & Gold)

  • Start with Metallic Gold (Bottom Half).
  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Side + Roof + Right Side). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-12: Sc across. (Gold Section).
  • Change to Glossy Black.
  • Row 13-35: Sc across. (Black Section).
  • Window Cutouts: In the Black section on the side walls, Ch 12, Sk 12 to create rectangular windows.
  • Lightning Bolt: Surface slip stitch or embroider a large Gold lightning bolt on the black section of the side walls before assembly.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Black)

  • Use Black yarn for the entire piece to create a dark studio atmosphere. Match the dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with window holes).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers. Use Gold for the bottom edge and Black for the rest.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

3. Acoustic Foam Panels

Use Dark Grey yarn and 2.5mm hook.

To simulate the egg-crate foam used in studios:

  • Row 1: Ch 6. Sc across.
  • Row 2: *Sc, Bobble St* repeat across.
  • Row 3: Sc across.
  • Make 6-8 of these small textured squares. Glue them to the interior walls in a checkerboard pattern.
