The “Dried Flower” Barn – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to a quiet corner of the countryside where time slows down. The “Dried Flower” Barn is a vintage-inspired caravan workshop dedicated to the art of preserving nature. Unlike bright, fresh florists, this shop embraces the muted, nostalgic tones of autumn and winter. The exterior features a classic two-tone design in Cream and Oak Brown, adorned with delicate lace curtains in the windows. Inside, the ceiling is a cascading meadow of dried lavender, wheat, and baby’s breath hanging upside down to dry. The workshop is tended by a gentle Rabbit in a floral pinafore, processing the day’s harvest next to her trusty vintage bicycle.

This project is designed for the advanced crocheter who loves texture and miniature details. To ensure the caravan maintains its “barn-like” sturdiness and clean interior finish, we strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). We will also be using precision micro-crochet for the botanical elements.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Part 1: The Barn Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Oak Brown.

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to size. Sandwich between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Two-Tone Shell (U-Shaped)

This creates the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. We want a vintage aesthetic.

Panel A: Exterior (Brown & Cream)

  • Start with Oak Brown.
  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Wall + Roof + Right Wall). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-12: Sc across (Brown Section – Lower Body).
  • Change to Cream.
  • Row 13-35: Sc across (Cream Section – Upper Body & Roof).
  • Window Cutouts: In the Cream section on both “wall” sides, Ch 10 and Sk 10 to create square window openings.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Cream)

  • Use Cream yarn for the entire piece to keep the workshop bright. Match the dimensions and window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly & Lace:

  • Lace Curtains (Hook 1.5mm): Before assembling, crochet a mesh grid (Ch 5, sk 2, sc) using fine white thread inside the window frames of Panel B (Interior).
  • Sandwich: Cut plastic canvas (with window holes). Place between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers. Use Brown for the bottom edge and Cream for the rest.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

3. The Split Door (Dutch Door)

To fit the “Barn” theme, we will make a door that is split horizontally.

  • Bottom Door (Brown): Make 2 squares. Sandwich canvas. Sew to the bottom half of the opening.
  • Top Door (Cream): Make 2 squares with a small window. Sandwich canvas. Sew to the top half.

Part 2: The Dried Floral Ceiling (Maximalism)

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.5mm Hook. The key to this look is volume and texture.

1. Lavender Bunches

  • Stem: Use Sage Green. Ch 10.
  • Flowers: Use Pale Purple. Sl st into the 3rd ch. *Ch 3, sl st in same st (Picot)*. Work 3-4 picots in the same stitch. Sl st down one chain, repeat picot cluster. Do this for the top half of the chain.
  • Assembly: Group 3 stems together, tie with real Jute Twine, and glue upside down to the ceiling.

2. Wheat Sheaves

  • Stem: Straw Yellow. Ch 12.
  • Grain Head: *Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch (tiny picot), sl st in next chain*. Repeat down 5 chains. It should look bumpy.
  • Assembly: Bundle 5-6 stalks. Tie with twine. Hang upside down.

3. Baby’s Breath

  • Stem: Brown thread. Ch 5.
  • Branching: *Ch 3, White French Knot or White bead at tip, sl st back*. Repeat to make a branching structure.
  • Make these airy and glue them between the heavier bunches.

Part 3: Interior Workshop Details

Use Hook Size: 1.5mm

1. Wall Wreaths

  • Base: Brown yarn. Twist several strands tightly to form a circle/vine look. Glue ends.
  • Decor: Glue tiny scraps of the dried flowers (Lavender/White) to one side of the wreath.
  • Hang these on the interior walls.

2. Rusty Pruning Shears

  • Blades: Grey/Copper yarn. Ch 5, sl st back. Make 2 blades.
  • Handles: Copper/Rust yarn. Ch 4, join to loop. Attach to bottom of blades.
  • Glue in an open position on a small shelf or table.

3. Potpourri Basket

  • Basket: Jute or Tan yarn. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. BLO Sc around. Sc 3 rows.
  • Contents: Fill with tiny snips of red, orange, and yellow yarn to look like dried rose petals and citrus slices.

Part 4: The Exterior Scene

1. The Rabbit Florist

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

  • Ears: Ch 8. Sc back. Make 2 long ears. Sew to head.
  • Body: Cream. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 5 rows. Dec to close.
  • Dress:

Skirt: (Sc, Inc) around to flare. Work 3 rows.

2. The Vintage Bicycle

This requires wire for stability. Use Hook 1.5mm.

  • Wheels (Make 2):

Tire: Black. Ch 20, join. Sc around. Insert a wire circle inside.

Spokes: Use Grey thread to sew a star pattern from the center hub to the tire.

  • Handlebars & Seat: Wire covered in Brown yarn.
  • Basket: Tan yarn. MR 5 sc, Inc to 10. BLO Sc around. Sc 3 rows. Glue to handlebars.
  • Cargo: Fill the bike basket with “Dried Daisies” (White circles with yellow centers).

3. The Fence

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm.

  • Pickets: Grey/Brown (Wood color). Ch 8, Sc back. Make 5 pieces.
  • Rails: Ch 15. Sc back. Make 2.
  • Assembly: Glue pickets onto rails. Lean against the caravan.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the U-shaped shell is secured to the floor. The “Sandwich” walls must be stiff to hold the weight of the hanging ceiling flowers.
  2. The Ceiling (Crucial Step): This takes time. Glue your Lavender, Wheat, and Baby’s Breath bunches to the ceiling of the interior. Pack them densely for the “Maximalist” look.
  3. Interior Decor: Glue the Wreaths to the walls. Place the Potpourri basket and Shears on a small work table (crocheted block).
  4. Exterior Scene: Position the Bicycle leaning against the fence or the caravan. Stand the Rabbit nearby, tying her bouquet.
