Good morning, crafters! Wake up to the smell of maple syrup and freshly baked batter with this delicious project: The “Waffle” Breakfast House. This caravan is a tribute to everyone’s favorite breakfast treat. The exterior is not just painted yellow; it is textured with a raised, square grid pattern that perfectly mimics a crispy, golden-brown waffle. It looks good enough to eat!
Inside, the caravan is a bustling breakfast kitchen. It features a realistic open waffle iron, stacks of both square and round waffles, jars of amber maple syrup, fresh strawberries, and generous dollops of whipped cream. Outside, a hungry brown bear wearing a blue gingham bib waits patiently at a table for his giant serving of syrup-drenched waffles.
This is an advanced texture project. To achieve the deep, grid-like “waffle” texture on the exterior while keeping the walls straight and sturdy, we use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). We will also be switching hook sizes frequently to accommodate the tiny food details.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Part 1: The Waffle Structure (Sandwich Method)
Use Hook Size: 2.5mm
The exterior must look like a waffle. We achieve this using the Waffle Stitch pattern on the outer panel, a plain panel for the inside, and plastic canvas in between.
1. The Floor Base
Make 2 identical panels using Golden Brown (Crust color).
- Row 1: Ch 21. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (20)
- Row 2-36: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4″ x 6.5″).
- Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.
Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to size. Sandwich between the panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.
2. The Waffle-Texture Exterior (U-Shaped Shell)
This piece forms the Left Wall, Roof, and Right Wall. We use the Waffle Stitch.
Panel A: Exterior (Butter Yellow)
- Row 1: Ch 89 (Multiple of 3 + 2). Dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as Dc), *FPdc in next st, Dc in next 2 sts* repeat to last 2 sts, FPdc, Dc in last st. Turn.
- Row 3: Ch 3, *Dc in next st, FPdc in next 2 sts* repeat to last 2 sts, Dc in last 2 sts. Turn.
- Repeat Rows 2-3: Continue until the piece is wide enough to cover the depth of the floor (approx 20-22 rows). The FPdc stitches create the raised grid lines of the waffle.
- Cutout: When you reach the side that will have the large opening/door, bind off the center stitches for the opening and work the sides separately, then rejoin chain above the door frame.
Panel B: Interior Lining (Butter Yellow)
- Row 1: Ch 89. Sc in 2nd ch and across.
- Row 2-End: Sc across until this plain panel matches the dimensions of the Waffle Panel exactly. Include the door cutout.
Assembly:
- Cut plastic canvas to match the U-shape.
- Sandwich canvas between Waffle Panel A and Plain Panel B.
- Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers. The waffle texture should face outward.
- Shape: Bend into a U-shape and sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

Part 2: The Breakfast Kitchen (Interior)
Use Hook Size: 2.5mm for furniture, 1.5mm for food.
1. Countertops & Shelves
- Counters: Use Golden Brown. Crochet simple rectangular boxes (stuffed or lined with cardboard) to fit the curved corners of the caravan.
- Shelves: Crochet flat strips of brown yarn and glue them to the back wall.
2. The Waffle Iron (Detailed)
- Base & Lid (Make 2): Use Black yarn (2.5mm hook).
Row 1: Ch 8. Sc across.
Row 2-8: Sc across.
Interior Grids: With Light Grey yarn, surface slip stitch a grid pattern onto one side of the Base and one side of the Lid.
- Hinge: Sew the back edges together so it opens and closes like a clamshell. Glue to the counter.
3. Stacks of Waffles
Use Golden Brown yarn and 1.5mm hook.
- Square Waffles: Ch 6. Sc across for 5 rows. Surface slip stitch a # grid on top. Make 10. Stack them and glue together.
- Round Waffles: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, Inc to 18. Surface slip stitch a # grid. Make 10. Stack them.
4. Maple Syrup Jars
Use 1.5mm hook.
- Jar: Use Amber/Translucent yarn. MR 5 sc. BLO Sc around. Sc 4 rows. Stuff with a scrap of orange yarn.
- Neck: Dec to 4 sc. Sc 1 row.
- Handle: Ch 3 tiny loop on the side.
- Label: Glue a tiny square of beige paper on the front.
5. Strawberries & Butter
Use 1.5mm hook.
- Strawberries: Red yarn. MR 4 sc. Sc 1 row. Dec to close. Sew a speck of green at the top. Make 5-6.
- Butter: Yellow yarn. Ch 4, Sc back. Fold in half to make a tiny cube. Make 3.
Part 3: The Exterior Scene
Use Hook Size: 2.5mm
1. The Breakfast Bear

- Plate: White. MR 6 sc, Inc to… 30 sc. Fasten off.
- The Meal: Glue a stack of 3 Round Waffles (from Part 2) onto the plate.
- The Syrup Drip (Crucial): Use Amber yarn. Ch 20. Arrange this chain in a spiral over the waffle stack, letting ends hang down the side. Use clear glue to make it look wet/glossy.
- Place the table and bear outside the caravan door.
Part 4: Exterior Details & Assembly
1. The Wheels
- Hubcap: Light Grey. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12.
- Tire: Black. (Sc 1, Inc) to 18. (Sc 2, Inc) to 24. Sc around. Sew to sides.
2. The Ramp/Door
- Because the side is open, we need a ramp.
- Ramp: Butter Yellow (Waffle Stitch). Crochet a rectangle approx 2 inches wide by 3 inches long using the waffle stitch pattern.
- Sew one short edge to the floor of the caravan opening, angled down to the ground.
3. Finishing Touches
- Curtains: Blue yarn. Ch 10, Sc 2 rows. Gather and glue to the interior corners of the opening.
