The Pretzel & Ale Haus – Free Crochet Pattern

Willkommen! Celebrate the spirit of Oktoberfest all year round with this adorable “Pretzel & Ale Haus” Caravan. Inspired by traditional Bavarian architecture (Fachwerk), this mobile shop features white walls crisscrossed with dark brown timber beams and a textured shingled roof. Inside, it is a maximalist’s dream: golden pretzels hang from every rafter, oak barrels are stacked high, and frothy steins of ale await thirsty travelers. The scene is completed by a charming Dachshund wearing a feathered Tyrolean hat, ready to greet customers.

This is an advanced project that requires structural work to ensure the caravan maintains its boxy, house-like shape. We will use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn) for the walls, floor, and roof. This technique ensures the walls are rigid and the plastic mesh is completely hidden from view, providing a flawless finish inside and out.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Part 1: The Structure (Sandwich Method)

We will construct the caravan in flat panels. Each structural part consists of an Outer Panel, a Plastic Canvas Core, and an Inner Panel.

1. The Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Dark Brown.

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-45: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (25)
  3. Target Size: Approx 4 inches x 7 inches.
  4. Fasten off the first piece. Do not fasten off the second.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to fit. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the entire perimeter through both layers to lock the canvas inside.

2. The Bavarian Walls (U-Shape)

This single long piece will fold to create the Left Wall, Back Wall, and Right Wall. The front is open.

Panel A (Exterior Shell):

  • Start with White Yarn.
  • Row 1: Ch 101. Sc in 2nd ch and across. (100)
  • Row 2-25: Sc across. (100)
  • Window Cutout (Right side): On one end of the strip (approx stitch 80-90), Sc to the start of window, Ch 10, Sk 10, Sc to end. Next row, Sc into chains. (Adjust placement to match the photo).
  • Gable Ends (Triangles): The Left and Right walls need a triangular top for the pitched roof. After finishing Row 25, fasten off. Reattach yarn at the start of the Left Wall section (first 30 sts). Work rows, decreasing 1 st at start and end of every row until a point is reached. Repeat for the Right Wall section. The Back wall (middle section) stays flat.

Panel B (Interior Lining):

  • Repeat the same steps as Panel A using White Yarn. Ensure the window gap aligns perfectly.

The “Fachwerk” Timber Beams (Crucial Step):

  • Before assembling, use Dark Brown yarn to surface slip stitch or embroider the timber frame pattern onto Panel A.
  • Create vertical beams at the corners and intervals.
  • Create horizontal beams at the top and bottom.
  • Create the characteristic “X” or diagonal beams between the verticals.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas to match the complex shape (including the triangular gables and window).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and B.
  • Using Dark Brown yarn, Sc around the entire perimeter (including the window frame) to seal.
  • Fold into a U-shape and sew securely to the Floor Base.

Part 2: The Shingled Roof

The roof mimics tiled shingles using a layered stitch pattern.

Roof Base Panels (Make 2)

Use Dark Brown for the underside (ceiling).

  1. Row 1: Ch 60 (Length of the caravan + overhang). Sc across.
  2. Row 2-20: Sc across. (Width from roof peak to eaves).
  3. Make 4 of these rectangular panels (2 for Outer Roof, 2 for Inner Ceiling).

  • Row 2: Work in the unworked Back Loops of Row 1. Sc across.
  • Row 3: Work in FLO of Row 2. Repeat the Shell pattern, but shift the shells so they sit between the shells of the row below (brick lay pattern).
  • Repeat until the entire panel is covered in overlapping “scales.”

Roof Assembly

  • Sandwich plastic canvas between the Shingled Outer Panel and the Plain Brown Inner Panel. Sc around edges to seal.
  • Repeat for the other side of the roof.
  • Sew the two roof panels together at the top ridge.
  • Glue/Sew the roof onto the triangular gables of the walls.
