Berry Picker Mouse – Free Crochet Pattern

Celebrate the sweetness of summer with this delightful “Berry Picker” Mouse. This charming amigurumi character captures the essence of a sunny afternoon in the garden. The mouse features soft grey fur and large, expressive round ears. She is dressed in a nostalgic 1960s-style ensemble: a vibrant red A-line dress speckled with white polka dots, paired with a pristine white collar capelet that rests gently on her shoulders.

Her outfit is accessorized with a matching red polka-dot kerchief headband, cute red ballet flats, and a detailed strawberry-shaped crossbody bag. To complete the scene, she holds a delicate white strawberry blossom, accompanied by a tiny buzzing bumblebee friend. This project is perfect for intermediate crocheters looking to practice color changes, clothing construction, and miniature details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight yarn in the following colors: Grey (body), Red (dress, shoes, headband, bag), White (capelet, embroidery, flower), Green (bag leaves, stems), Yellow (flower center, bee), Black (bee stripes, eyes).
  • Pink embroidery thread for the nose.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook (for the mouse and tiny items).
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook (optional for the dress if you have tight tension).
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • 8mm or 9mm Black Safety Eyes.
  • Yarn needle and embroidery needle.
  • Scissors and stitch markers.
  • Pins for assembly.

Gauge & Finished Size

The finished mouse stands approximately 20-22 cm (8-9 inches) tall using the recommended yarn and hook. Gauge is not critical, but stitches should be tight enough so stuffing does not show through. If using a different yarn weight, adjust your hook size accordingly (usually one size smaller than the yarn label recommendation).

Construction Overview

The legs and body are worked as one continuous piece, starting from the red shoes and changing to grey. The head, arms, and tail are made separately and sewn on. The dress, capelet, and headband are removable accessories, allowing for dress-up play. The polka dots on the dress and headband are embroidered after crocheting to ensure they are evenly spaced and distinct.

Clothing

Red Polka Dot Dress

Use Red yarn. Worked from the waist up, then skirt down.

  • Bodice:
  • Row 1: Ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across [24]. Turn.
  • Row 2: sc around, but at the end ch 4 and sl st to first st to form a ring (this creates the armhole/back opening space). Continue in rounds from here or work flat if you prefer buttons. Let’s work in rounds for the skirt but keep bodice flat for dressing ease. Actually, let’s make it simple: Work flat for bodice rows.
  • Row 2: sc 24. Turn.
  • Row 3: sc 4, ch 4, skip 4 (armhole), sc 8, ch 4, skip 4 (armhole), sc 4 [24 sts/ch]. Turn.
  • Row 4: sc across including chains [24]. Turn.
  • Skirt:
  • Row 5: Ch 2, dc inc in every st across [48]. Join to first dc with sl st to work in rounds now.
  • Rnd 6: (dc 3, inc) repeat around [60]
  • Rnd 7–11: dc around [60]
  • Rnd 12: (sc 1, ch 2, sc in next st) repeat around for a simple lace edge.

FO. Sew a snap button or small button to the back of the bodice.
Polka Dots: With White yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider small French knots or horizontal dashes randomly all over the red dress to create the polka dot pattern.

White Capelet (Jacket)

Use White yarn.

  • Row 1: Ch 20 (check it fits around the neck loosely). sc in 2nd ch from hook and across [19]. Turn.
  • Row 2: ch 2, dc inc in every st across [38]. Turn.
  • Row 3: ch 2, (dc 1, inc) repeat across [57]. Turn.
  • Row 4: ch 1, sc across [57].

FO. Make two small chains (about 10 ch each) and attach to the front corners to tie the capelet closed, or sew a tiny hook and eye.

Kerchief/Bandana

Use Red yarn.

  • Row 1: Ch 61. sc in 2nd ch from hook and across [60].
  • Row 2: Turn, sl st in first 15 sts, sc 30, sl st in last 15 sts. (This makes the middle wider).
  • Row 3: Turn, skip sl sts, working over the center 30 sc: sc 1, hdc 1, dc across 26 sts, hdc 1, sc 1.

FO. Embroider white polka dots to match the dress. Tie around the mouse’s head with the knot at the nape of the neck or on top as preferred.

Strawberry Flower

Start with Yellow yarn.

  • Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc, sl st to first sc.
  • Change to White yarn.
  • Rnd 2: *ch 2, 2 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in same st, sl st in next st* repeat 5 times.

Tiny Bumblebee

Start with Yellow yarn.

  • Change to Black.
  • Rnd 2: sc around [6]
  • Change to Yellow.
  • Rnd 3: sc around [6]
  • Change to Black.
  • Rnd 4: dec around [3]

FO. Sew a tiny piece of white yarn on top for wings. Attach a thin wire or invisible thread to make it “fly” near the flower.

Assembly

  1. Dress the Mouse: Pull the red polka dot dress up over the legs. Fasten the back.
  2. Capelet: Place the white capelet over the shoulders and tie at the front neck.
  3. Headband: Wrap the red kerchief around the head, in front of the ears, and tie securely.
  4. Bag: Place the strawberry bag strap over one shoulder so the bag rests on the opposite hip.
  5. Finishing Touches: Sew the flower stem to one hand. If using wire for the bee, wrap it around the flower stem so the bee hovers above the petals.
