The Roasted Chestnut Seller – Free Crochet Pattern

This character is a Dark Brown Bear, featuring rich, chocolate-colored fur that contrasts beautifully with the snowy season. She is bundled up against the chill in a classic, vintage-inspired wardrobe. Her outfit begins with a cozy wool dress featuring a traditional Red and Green Plaid (tartan) pattern, evoking memories of holiday wrapping paper and warm blankets. To brave the outdoor weather, she wears a thick Earth Brown Duffle Coat, complete with iconic toggle fastenings. A chunky Cream Scarf is wrapped snugly around her neck, and a fuzzy Earflap Hat protects her from the biting wind. Her feet are kept toasty in fur-lined ankle boots.

She is ready to serve her customers with a “paper” cone filled with hot roasted chestnuts, and she holds a single, perfectly cracked chestnut in her paw to inspect the quality. She is never alone on her street corner; a friendly little Squirrel has come down from the park trees, hoping to share in the warm treat. This pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters who love layering textures and creating detailed winter accessories.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the bear body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished bear stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The clothing layers are designed to fit over the body, so checking the fit as you go is recommended.

Construction Overview

The bear is constructed in pieces. The legs are made first and joined to form the body. The head is a sphere with a defined muzzle area. The plaid dress is created by crocheting a green base and then surface-embroidering the red grid lines to mimic tartan fabric. The duffle coat is worked flat with buttonholes for the toggles. The earflap hat is shaped to cover the ears. The accessories—cone, chestnuts, and squirrel—are detailed miniatures.
