The Herb Gardener Sheep – Free Crochet Pattern

This gentle sheep features a soft, cream-colored fleece and a calm, kindly expression. She is dressed for a day of tending to her plants in a practical yet beautiful outfit. Her dress is a stunning shade of Sage Green, mimicking the color of dried herbs, and features a unique detail: the names “Basil” and “Thyme” are lovingly embroidered along the hem, celebrating her favorite crops. Over her dress, she wears a sturdy Earth Brown apron equipped with deep pockets for holding seed packets and twine. To protect her eyes from the midday sun, she dons a beige bucket hat with a relaxed, drooping brim.

She walks through the garden path in comfortable Dark Green garden clogs. Her accessories are essential to her trade: a rustic “wooden” style harvesting trug (basket) and a fresh bundle of Rosemary sprigs. Keeping her company is a tiny, studious Green Caterpillar wearing wire-rimmed glasses, perhaps inspecting the quality of the leaves. This pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters who love embroidery details and gardening themes.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the sheep body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished sheep stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The clothing is designed to be removable.

Construction Overview

The sheep is constructed in pieces. The legs are made first and joined to form the body. The head is a sphere that transitions from a smooth face to a textured “woolly” cap using bobble stitches. The dress is worked from the waist down to create a full linen-style skirt, which is then embroidered. The apron is a separate flat piece. The bucket hat is worked in rounds. The accessories—trug, rosemary, and caterpillar—are detailed miniatures.
