The Chess Queen Rabbit – Free Crochet Pattern

Step through the looking glass and into a world of strategy, whimsy, and royal elegance. “The Chess Queen Rabbit” is a sophisticated amigurumi character inspired by the timeless allure of classic fairy tales and the intellectual beauty of a chessboard. She is not just a toy; she is a piece of art representing the Queen’s gambit in the cutest form possible.

This pristine white rabbit stands with poise and dignity, featuring long, alert ears and a gentle expression. Her wardrobe is a masterpiece of miniature design. She wears a striking A-line dress featuring a bold Black and White Checkerboard pattern, created using the tapestry crochet technique to mimic a game board. To assert her royal status, she dons a majestic Red Velvet-colored cape with a high, regal collar that frames her face perfectly. A delicate golden crown sits atop her head, signifying her rule over the board.

Her accessories are meticulously themed: she carries a drawstring pouch shaped like a white Pawn piece, perhaps holding her next move, and a miniature Knight chess piece. At her feet lies the Ace of Hearts, a subtle nod to the magical world she inhabits. This pattern is designed for intermediate to advanced crocheters who are ready to tackle colorwork and detailed shaping.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the rabbit body. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished rabbit stands approximately 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) tall (including ears). The checkerboard dress requires consistent tension to keep the pattern aligned.

Construction Overview

The rabbit is constructed in pieces. The legs are made first, starting with the black shoes, and are joined to form the body. The head is round with long ears sewn on top. The Checkerboard Dress is the highlight of this pattern; it is worked using tapestry crochet (carrying the non-working yarn inside the stitches) to create clean color changes. The cape is worked flat. The accessories—crown, bag, and chess piece—are detailed miniatures.
