The Swiss Alp Sheep – Free Crochet Pattern

Transport yourself to the fresh, crisp air of the mountains with “The Swiss Alp Sheep.” This charming amigurumi character is inspired by the beloved stories of Heidi, capturing the innocence and beauty of life in the Swiss Alps. With her sweet expression and traditional attire, she brings a touch of countryside nostalgia to any collection.

This gentle sheep features a soft beige face and a coat of fluffy white wool, meticulously textured to look just like the real thing. She is dressed in a stunning traditional Dirndl, the folk dress of the Alps. Her outfit consists of a deep Royal Blue skirt and bodice, layered over a crisp white blouse with puffy sleeves. To protect her dress while she tends to the flock, she wears a delicate white apron embroidered with tiny wildflowers. Her hair—or rather, her wool—is kept tidy with a rustic red kerchief tied at the nape of her neck. She walks the mountain paths in sensible black shoes with lace-trimmed white socks. No Alpine shepherdess is complete without her tools: she carries a golden cowbell to call the herd and a rare Edelweiss flower found on the high peaks. Her constant companion is a tiny, faithful mountain Goat, ready to climb the steepest rocks. This pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters who love cultural costumes and storytelling.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the sheep body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished sheep stands approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall. The Dirndl and accessories are removable.

Construction Overview

The sheep is constructed in pieces. The head begins with a smooth beige face and transitions into a textured “woolly” cap using Bobble stitches. The body is also textured. The legs are designed with color changes to create the shoes and socks seamlessly. The Dirndl dress is a separate garment. The accessories—cowbell, flower, and goat—are detailed miniatures.
