Pumpkin Patch Bunny – Free Crochet Pattern

Pumpkin Patch Bunny is a sweet little autumn friend: a cream bunny in a cozy pumpkin pinafore dress, tiny Mary Jane shoes, a sage-green beanie with a pumpkin stem, a beige pumpkin tote bag, and a few miniature pumpkins and a leaf to style your photos.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec – invisible decrease (sc 2 sts together through front loops only)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rep – repeat
  • R – round/row

All parts are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise noted. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round.

Materials

  • Sport or light DK weight yarn in:
    1. Cream (main bunny body and “sweater”)
    2. Light brown (shoes and pumpkin stems)
    3. Orange (pinafore dress and pumpkins)
    4. Sage green (hat and leaf)
    5. Beige (tote bag)
    6. Small amount of black or dark brown for facial embroidery
  • Crochet hook size 2.5–3.0 mm (or size needed for tight fabric)
  • 8 mm safety eyes (pair)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers and scissors

Optional: a bit of blush or soft pastel for cheeks.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Approximate gauge: 8–9 sc per 1″ (2.5 cm) in the round.
  • With the yarn and hook above, the bunny stands about 8.5–9″ (21–23 cm) tall, not including the hat.

Small differences in yarn and tension will slightly change the size but keep the proportions.

Construction Overview

The bunny is crocheted in separate pieces: legs, body, arms, head, ears, and tail, then sewn together. The “sweater” is simply the cream body and arms. Clothing and accessories are removable: an orange pumpkin pinafore dress, a ribbed sage beanie with a little brown stem, a beige pumpkin tote, and two pumpkins plus a leaf for styling.

Stuff firmly but evenly so the fabric stays smooth and the stitches remain clear and defined.

Bunny Body Parts

Legs (make 2 – start with shoe color)

Using light brown:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each st (12)
R3: (sc, inc) rep around (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) rep around (24)
R5: BLO sc around (24) – shoe ridge
R6–7: sc around (24)
R8: 8 sc, 4 dec, 8 sc (20)
R9: 6 sc, 4 dec, 6 sc (16)

Change to cream for leg:

R10: BLO sc around (16) – ankle fold
R11–23: sc around (16)

Fasten off the first leg and weave in tail.
Do not fasten off the second leg – you will join the legs into the body.

Stuff shoes and legs firmly up to the top.

Join Legs & Crochet Body

With the working yarn still attached to the second leg (cream):

R1 (join): ch 4, attach to the first leg with a sc, continue around the first leg with 15 sc, sc in each of 4 ch, then 16 sc around the second leg (including the st where you started the ch). You should have 40 sts around. Place marker. (16 + 4 + 16 + 4)

R2: sc around (40)
R3: (8 sc, dec) rep 4 times (36)
R4–6: sc around (36)
R7: (7 sc, dec) rep 4 times (32)
R8–10: sc around (32)
R11: (6 sc, dec) rep 4 times (28)
R12: sc around (28)
R13: (5 sc, dec) rep 4 times (24)
R14: sc around (24)
R15: (4 sc, dec) rep 4 times (20)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the head later.
Stuff the body firmly, shaping a soft oval.

Arms (make 2)

Using cream:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each (12)
R3: (3 sc, inc) rep 3 times (15)
R4: sc around (15)
R5: (3 sc, dec) rep 3 times (12)

Change to cream or a slightly lighter/warmer cream if you want “sweater sleeves” to stand out (optional):

R6: sc around (12)
R7: BLO sc around (12) – sleeve cuff
R8–19: sc around (12)

Lightly stuff hands and lower part of arm; leave the top 4–5 rounds unstuffed so they sit nicely against the body.
Flatten the top and work 6 sc through both layers to close. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Head

Using cream:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each (12)
R3: (sc, inc) rep around (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) rep around (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) rep around (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) rep around (36)
R7–11: sc around (36)

Insert 8 mm safety eyes between R8 and R9, about 7–8 sts apart.
Embroider a simple V-shaped nose and small smile centered between the eyes a little below them.

Begin stuffing the head and keep stuffing as you close.

R12: (4 sc, dec) rep around (30)
R13: (3 sc, dec) rep around (24)
R14: (2 sc, dec) rep around (18)
R15: (sc, dec) rep around (12)
R16: dec around (6)

Fasten off and close the hole. Shape gently with your hands.

Ears (make 2)

Using cream:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: (sc, inc) rep 3 times (9)
R3: (2 sc, inc) rep 3 times (12)
R4–14: sc around (12)

R15: (2 sc, dec) rep 3 times (9)
R16: sc around (9)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Do not stuff; flatten lightly to keep a soft, floppy look.

Tail

Using cream:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each (12)
R3: sc around (12)
R4: dec around (6)

Fasten off and close, leaving a tail for sewing. Lightly stuff.

Assembly: Bunny Base

  1. Attach head to body:
    • Place the head on the body, centered over the opening created at R15 of the body.
    • Sew around carefully with the long tail from the body, tightening as you go so the neck is secure and straight.
  2. Attach arms:
    • Position arms just below the neckline, slightly angled forward.
    • Sew through the closed tops of the arms and several body stitches on each side.
  3. Attach ears:
    • Fold each ear slightly at the base to create a gentle curve.
    • Sew to the sides/top of the head, starting roughly at R3–R4 from the crown, so they frame the face and hang forward.
  4. Attach tail:
    • Sew the small pom tail centered on the back of the body near the bottom.

Set the bunny aside while you make clothes and accessories.

Pumpkin Pinafore Dress

The dress is made in three parts: underskirt ruffle, orange scallop skirt, and bodice with straps and a pumpkin applique.

Cream Underskirt

Using cream:

Ch 54, join with a sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

R1: ch 1, sc in each ch around (54), sl st to first sc.
R2–4: ch 1, sc in each st around (54), sl st to first sc.

Fasten off and weave in ends. This is the subtle layer peeking out under the main skirt.

Orange Scallop Skirt

Using orange:

Ch 54, join with sl st into a ring.

R1: ch 1, sc in each st around (54), sl st to first sc.
R2: ch 2 (counts as dc), dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep around. (Approximately 72 dc). Join with sl st.
R3 (scallops): sl st in next st, skip 1, 5 dc in next st, skip 1; rep around. Adjust at the end if necessary to keep a nice scallop sequence.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Slide the orange skirt over the cream underskirt so the scallops hang slightly lower.

Bodice Panel

Using orange:

Ch 21.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (20).
Rows 2–6: ch 1, turn, sc across (20).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing into a loop.

Wrap this rectangle snugly around the bunny’s chest over the body (above the widest part of the skirt). Sew the short ends together at the center back.

Straps (make 2)

Attach orange yarn at the front top corner of the bodice.

Strap 1:

  • ch 18 (or enough to reach comfortably over the shoulder to the back).
  • Fasten off and sew the end to the back top edge of the bodice directly behind where you started.

Repeat for the other side for Strap 2. The straps should cross slightly on the back or run straight over the shoulders—whichever fits best on your bunny.

Chest Pumpkin Appliqué

Using orange:

R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to first sc, do not work in continuous rounds (6).
R2: ch 1, (sc, inc) around (9–10 sts). Fasten off.

Using sage green or light brown:

  • Attach yarn at the top center of the pumpkin circle.
  • ch 3, sl st back into the first ch to form a tiny stem. Fasten off.

Sew the pumpkin appliqué in the center of the bodice front.

Slide the skirt + bodice set onto the bunny from the feet up, pull bodice into place, and settle straps on the shoulders.

Sage Green Beanie with Stem

The hat is made sideways in ribbed rows and then shaped at the crown.

Ribbed Band

Using sage green:

Ch 7.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (6).
Rows 2–44: ch 1, turn, sc in BLO across (6).

After Row 44, bring the short ends together and sew to form a ring. Turn so the seam is on the inside.

Crown

Working along one long edge of the ribbed band:

R1: Evenly pick up 44 sc around the edge, join with sl st.
R2: sc around (44)
R3: (9 sc, dec) rep 4 times (40)
R4: (8 sc, dec) rep 4 times (36)
R5: (7 sc, dec) rep 4 times (32)
R6: (6 sc, dec) rep 4 times (28)
R7: (5 sc, dec) rep 4 times (24)
R8: (4 sc, dec) rep 4 times (20)
R9: (3 sc, dec) rep 4 times (16)
R10: dec around (8)
R11: dec around (4)

Fasten off, weave the tail through remaining stitches, pull tight to close the top.

Brown Stem

Using light brown:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2–4: sc around (6)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Sew the tiny stem firmly to the center top of the hat.
The beanie should sit low on the bunny’s forehead with a snug, cozy fit.

Pumpkin Tote Bag

Bag Body

Using beige:

Ch 11.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (10).
Rows 2–8: ch 1, turn, sc across (10).

Do not fasten off.

Round around the edge:

  • ch 1, sc evenly around all four sides of the rectangle, working 3 sc in each corner.
  • Join with sl st at the first sc.

Repeat 1–2 more rounds of sc around to build a slight depth to the bag.
Fasten off and sew the sides if needed to create a shallow pocket.

Bag Handle

Using beige:

Ch 24 (adjust length to fit your bunny’s arm).
Attach each end to the inside of the bag opening with a few stitches.

Pumpkin Patch on Bag

Using orange:

R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to first sc, fasten off.

Using green or brown, embroider a tiny stem at the top.
Sew this pumpkin circle on the center front of the bag.

The bunny can hold the handle in one paw or wear it over the arm.

Mini Pumpkins & Leaf

Large Pumpkin

Using orange:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each (12)
R3: (sc, inc) rep around (18)
R4–5: sc around (18)
R6: (sc, dec) rep around (12)
R7: dec around (6)

Stuff lightly before closing. Fasten off and close.
Use a long strand of orange to wrap around the pumpkin 4–5 times, pulling gently to create ridges.

For stem (brown):

  • ch 3, sc in 2nd ch and next ch, sew on top.

Small Pumpkin

Using orange:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc in each (12)
R3: sc around (12)
R4: dec around (6)

Stuff lightly and close. Add a tiny brown stem and a couple of wraps to suggest ridges.

Leaf

Using sage green:

Ch 6.

Working back along the chain:

  • sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
  • sc in next ch,
  • hdc in next ch,
  • sc in next ch,
  • sl st in last ch.

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Shape into a soft leaf and sew or place near the pumpkins.

Finishing & Styling

Dress the bunny in her pumpkin pinafore, pop the beanie on her head, tuck the tote bag over one arm, and arrange the pumpkins and leaf around her feet. Add a touch of blush to the cheeks if you like.
