Morning Window Bunny – Free Crochet Pattern

Meet the Morning Window Bunny: a soft crochet bunny with a sage green pinafore dress, cozy cream sweater, brown Mary Jane shoes, a cream bucket hat, and a striped tote bag. She’s ready to sit by the window with her breakfast and morning notes.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec – invisible decrease (2 sc together)
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • rnd – round
  • RS – right side

Materials

  • Sport or light DK weight yarn in these colors:
    1. Cream – main bunny body, hat, sweater base (approx. 30–40 g)
    2. Light beige or tan – nose (a scrap)
    3. Sage green – pinafore dress and bag stripe (approx. 15–20 g)
    4. Warm brown – shoes (approx. 10 g)
    5. Additional cream – tote bag base (small amount)
  • Crochet hook: 2.5–3.0 mm (or size needed for a firm fabric)
  • Safety eyes: 8 mm black (2 pcs)
  • Tapestry needle for sewing and embroidery
  • Stitch markers
  • Polyester fiberfill for stuffing
  • Small button (6–8 mm) for the back of the pinafore (optional)

Gauge & Finished Size

Gauge is not critical, but the fabric should be tight so stuffing doesn’t show. With sport/DK yarn and a 2.5–3.0 mm hook, the finished bunny is approximately 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) tall, not including the hat.

Construction Overview

  • The bunny is made from separate pieces: head, body, arms, legs, ears, and tail.
  • Clothes and accessories are removable: sweater, pinafore dress, bucket hat, and striped tote bag.
  • Make all body parts first, then add the face details, sew everything together, and dress the bunny at the end.

Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3: sc around (12)
Rnd 4: (sc, dec) x 4 (8)

Stuff lightly, pull the opening closed, and fasten off with a tail for sewing.

Assembly of Bunny

  1. Attach the head to the body: sew the last round of the head to the top opening of the body. Take your time to keep the head straight and centered.
  2. Position the arms on the sides of the body around rnd 13–14, slanting slightly forward so the bunny can “rest” her paws on the table or hold a pencil. Sew securely.
  3. Attach the legs to the bottom of the body, slightly forward so the bunny can sit with feet resting on the floor/edge of a chair.
  4. Sew the tail on the back, centered near the bottom.
  5. Sew the ears on top of the head, slightly toward the back so they tilt forward gently. Adjust position so they frame the hat later.

Weave in all remaining body yarn tails neatly.

Cream Sweater

The sweater is a simple pullover style made as a tube with a soft, slightly relaxed fit.

Use cream yarn.

Sweater Body

Ch 25.
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (24). Turn.
Rows 2–10: ch 1, hdc in each st across (24). Turn.

This rectangle wraps around the body.

Fold the rectangle so short sides meet. Seam the side edges together using whip stitch, leaving 6 sts unsewn at the top on each side for armholes (about 3–4 sts height of arm-opening). Try it on the bunny as you go: the tube should slide over the body from the top before the head is sewn on, or from the bottom if your stuffing is not too firm.

Neck and Hem Ribbing

With RS facing and sweater oriented upright:

  • Neckline: Attach yarn at the top edge. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the neck opening (approx. 24–26 sc), join with sl st. Fasten off. Do not over-tighten; it should sit softly.
  • Hem: Attach yarn at the bottom edge. Rnd 1: sc around evenly, join with sl st. Rnd 2: BLO sc around to give a subtle rib look. Fasten off.

Slide the sweater onto the bunny’s body so the armholes line up with the arms. If needed, lightly tack sweater at the shoulders to keep it in place.

Sage Green Pinafore Dress

Use sage green yarn.

Skirt

Ch 40, join with sl st to form a ring (be careful not to twist).
Rnd 1: ch 1, sc in each ch around (40).
Rnd 2: (4 sc, inc) x 8 (48)
Rnds 3–6: sc around (48)

Fasten off. This creates a soft, lightly flared skirt that hits around mid-calf on the bunny.

Waistband & Bib

Turn the skirt so one edge becomes the waist. Choose a point to be the back.

Attach sage yarn at the back waist edge.

Row 1: sc in next 40 sts around the waist edge, but do not join; work in rows for the bib attachment. Turn.
Row 2: sc in first 8 sts, turn (leave remaining stitches unworked for now).
Rows 3–5: ch 1, sc in 8 sts, turn.

This small rectangle becomes the bib front.

Straps

From the top corners of the bib:

  • Strap 1: From right top corner, ch 18, skip 1 ch from hook, sc in each ch back to the bib (17 sc). Fasten off.
  • Strap 2: From left top corner, repeat: ch 18, sc back (17 sc). Fasten off.

Try the dress on the bunny over the sweater. Cross the straps in the back and stitch ends down to the back waistband, or sew one small button and make a button loop with chains on one strap if you prefer.

Brown Mary Jane Shoes

Make 2 with warm brown yarn.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: sc around (18)
Rnd 5: 5 sc, dec, 6 sc, dec, 5 sc (16)
Rnd 6: dec, 6 sc, dec, 6 sc (14)
Rnd 7: sc around (14)

Try the shoe on the bunny’s foot. It should fit snugly.

Strap

Find the center back of the shoe.

  • Attach yarn at the back edge of the opening.
  • Ch 8, sl st into the opposite side of the shoe opening to form the strap.
  • Fasten off and weave in end.

Repeat for the second shoe. Slip the bunny’s feet into the shoes; adjust stuffing in legs if needed so the shoes sit flat.

Cream Bucket Hat

Use cream yarn (same as body or slightly different cream).

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Rnds 6–8: sc around (30) – this forms the straight sides of the crown.

Now for the brim:

Rnd 9: BLO (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)
Rnd 10: (5 sc, inc) x 6 (42)
Rnd 11: (6 sc, inc) x 6 (48)

Fasten off and weave in end.
Place the hat on the bunny’s head so it frames the ears and tilts slightly forward, just like in the photo.

Striped Tote Bag

Use cream and sage green yarn.

Bag Body

With cream:

Ch 9.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (8). Turn.
Rows 2–6: ch 1, sc in each st across (8). Turn.

Change to sage green.
Rows 7–8: ch 1, sc in each st across (8). Turn.

Change back to cream.
Rows 9–10: ch 1, sc in each st across (8). Turn.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Fold the rectangle so Row 1 and Row 10 meet. Sew the sides with whip stitch to form a small tote.

Handle

With sage green:

Attach yarn to one side at the top edge.
Ch 22 (adjust length to sit at bunny’s shoulder).
Sl st to the opposite top edge to form a strap.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hang the tote over one shoulder so it rests against the bunny’s side, just like in the image.

Final Assembly & Styling

  • Dress the bunny in this order: sweater, pinafore dress, shoes, then place the bucket hat on the head and finally add the striped tote bag over one shoulder.
  • Adjust the ears so they peek out neatly from under the hat.
  • Shape the arms so one paw can rest on a tiny “notebook” or “pencil” prop in your miniature scene.

Your Morning Window Bunny is now ready to sit at a little wooden table with a glass of milk and a slice of toast, exactly like the cozy miniature morning in the photo.
