    2. Inner muzzle and paw pads (optional): lighter beige
    3. Nose and mouth: dark brown embroidery thread or yarn

    • OR beige/red yarn to crochet the entire dress (option 2 – fully crochet)
  • Crochet hook: 2.25–2.75 mm, sized for tight stitches
  • 6 mm black safety eyes
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Sewing needle and thread (for fabric dress version)
  • Small snap or hook-and-eye for back of dress (optional)

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Approx. 7–8 sc per 1″ (2.5 cm) in the round with body yarn.
  • Finished bear height: about 6–7″ (15–18 cm) seated.

Gauge is not critical, but use a hook small enough that stuffing doesn’t show through the stitches.

Construction Overview

Poppy Oven Bear is built in classic amigurumi style:

  • Bear – Head, body, arms, and legs are crocheted separately and sewn together. A rounded muzzle and small ears complete the teddy look.
  • Clothing – The bear wears a cotton gingham pinafore dress (or crocheted equivalent), a separate chestnut cardigan, mustard-gold slippers, and a cream bonnet with a soft ruffled brim.
  • Accessories – A tiny crochet basket holds three plump bread rolls, perfect for your miniature kitchen scene.

Dress the bear after all pieces are stuffed and sewn.

Muzzle (beige)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
Rnd 4–5: sc in each st around (18, 2 rnds)

Lightly stuff. FO with a long tail for sewing.

Embroider a rounded triangular nose at the top center of the muzzle with dark brown yarn, then a short vertical line and a tiny “Y” for the mouth.

Sew the muzzle centered between the eyes, overlapping slightly down toward the chin so it protrudes like in the photo.

Ears (make 2, light brown)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (9)
Rnd 3–4: sc in each st around (9, 2 rnds)

Do not stuff. Flatten the ear.

FO, leaving a tail. Sew each ear to the top sides of the head, slightly forward and low, so they peek out from under the bonnet.

Body (light brown)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) around (30)
Rnd 6–9: sc in each st around (30, 4 rnds)
Rnd 10: (3 sc, dec) around (24)
Rnd 11–13: sc in each st around (24, 3 rnds)
Rnd 14: (2 sc, dec) around (18)
Rnd 15–16: sc in each st around (18, 2 rnds)

Stuff firmly, shaping a soft oval body that sits nicely on the floor.

Rnd 17: (1 sc, dec) around (12)

FO, leaving a long tail to sew to the head.

Sew the head to the top of the body, making sure the bear looks straight ahead when seated.

Arms (make 2, light brown)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (2 sc, inc) twice (8)
Rnd 3–5: sc in each st around (8, 3 rnds)
Rnd 6: (2 sc, dec) twice (6)
Rnd 7–9: sc in each st around (6, 3 rnds)

Stuff lightly, mainly at the hand end, leaving the top a bit soft for natural bend.

FO with a tail. Sew arms to the body just below the neckline, angled slightly forward so the bear can hold the basket against her dress.

Legs (make 2, light brown)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc) around (16)
Rnd 4–5: sc in each st around (16, 2 rnds)
Rnd 6: (2 sc, dec) around (12)
Rnd 7–10: sc in each st around (12, 4 rnds)

Stuff firmly; the legs should be chubby and rounded to show from under the dress. Keep the last round slightly less stuffed so they bend when seated.

FO. Sew legs to the front bottom of the body so the bear can sit flat with feet pointing slightly outward, as in the kitchen floor pose.

Cream Ruffle Bonnet

Use cream yarn.

Bonnet Crown

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) around (30)
Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) around (36)

This circle should fit the top of the bear’s head.

Rnd 7–8: sc in each st around (36, 2 rnds)

Ruffle Brim

Rnd 9: FLO, (1 sc, inc) around (54)
Rnd 10: (1 sc, inc) around (81 approx.) – ignore exact count; just keep increasing evenly to create a frilly, wavy brim.

FO and weave in ends. The bonnet should cup the back of the head, with the ruffled brim framing the face, similar to a baker’s cap. You may tack it in place with a few stitches under the ears.

If you want ties like a classic bonnet, ch 35 from each corner of the brim and FO, but in the photo the bonnet simply hugs the head without visible ties.

Chestnut Cardigan

Use chestnut yarn.

Body

Ch 22.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (21), ch 1, turn.
Row 2–8: sc across (21), ch 1, turn after each row.

This rectangle wraps around the bear’s chest. The front will remain open.

Do not join; this is worked flat.

Neckline Shaping

Row 9: sc 5 (left front), ch 1, turn and work only these 5 sts for 2 more rows to slightly raise the neck. FO.

Rejoin yarn at the other side for the right front.

Row 9 (other side): skip 11 center sts for back neck, join yarn in 6th st from the opposite edge, sc 5, ch 1, turn; work 2 more rows over these 5 sts. FO.

You now have a V-ish opening at the front once folded over the shoulders.

Sleeves (make 2)

With bear wearing the cardigan body around its torso, mark roughly 6 sts for each armhole at the shoulders.

Remove and work sleeves:

Join chestnut yarn at bottom of one armhole.

Rnd 1: ch 1, sc 12 evenly around the opening, mark first st (12)
Rnd 2–6: sc around (12, 5 rnds)
Rnd 7: (4 sc, dec) twice (10)

FO and weave in; sleeve should reach just to the paws. Repeat for other armhole.

Put the cardigan on the bear, overlapping the fronts slightly. You may sew a tiny invisible stitch at the neckline or add a small snap if you’d like it closed.

Gingham Pinafore Dress

To keep the look as in the picture, the skirt and bib are sewn from red-and-cream gingham cotton, while the bear and all other pieces remain crochet. If you prefer an all-crochet dress, you can adapt this section with dc rows in red and cream; the shaping remains the same.

Skirt (fabric)

Cut a rectangle of gingham about 5 cm tall by 20–22 cm long (adjust to your bear). Hem the top and bottom edges with a small fold and straight stitch.

Gather the top edge to match the bear’s waist circumference (around cardigan hem). Sew the ends together to form a tube with the seam at the back.

Bib & Straps (fabric)

Cut a small rectangle for the bib, about 3 × 3.5 cm. Hem the edges, then sew it to the top front of the skirt, centered.

Cut two long thin strips for straps. Sew one end of each to the top corners of the bib, cross them over the bear’s back, and attach to the back waistband of the skirt. The straps should sit straight over the shoulders, same as in the image.

Add a small rectangular pocket on the front of the skirt if you wish, stitching it on three sides.

Slide the dress up over the bear’s legs and cardigan, resting at mid-calf with the bib centered.

Mustard Shoes (make 2)

Use mustard yarn.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (9)
Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc) around (12)
Rnd 4: sc in BLO around (12) – forms the edge of the sole.
Rnd 5–6: sc in each st around (12, 2 rnds)

Row 7 (top opening): sc in next 9 sts, turn, leaving 3 sts unworked at heel.
Row 8: ch 1, sc 9, FO.

Slip shoes onto the feet, shaping the opening like soft slippers. The rounded front and textured stitches help mimic the chunky knit look from the photo.

Bread Basket & Rolls

Basket (beige)

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (9)
Rnd 3: sc in BLO around (9)
Rnd 4–5: sc in each st around (9, 2 rnds)

Rnd 6 (rim): FLO, hdc, 2 hdc in next st around (approx. 14) – adjust as needed for a slightly flared rim.

FO, weave in. Pinch the sides gently to form an oval shape like a little bread tray.

Bread Rolls (make 3, warm yellow)

Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc (5)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (7)
Rnd 3–4: sc in each st around (7, 2 rnds)
Rnd 5: (1 sc, dec) around (5)

Stuff lightly before closing. FO and pull the tail through the remaining sts to cinch shut.

For a more “baked” look, lightly embroider a line of surface slip stitches along the top to mimic scoring on bread.

Arrange the three rolls snugly in the basket; tack them in place with a few stitches if you want them permanently fixed.

Place the finished basket in the bear’s hands, with arms slightly curved around it, just as in the miniature kitchen scene.

Final Styling

Dress Poppy Oven Bear in this order:

  1. Cardigan
  2. Gingham dress
  3. Mustard shoes
  4. Ruffle bonnet
  5. Bread basket placed gently between her paws

Seat her on a miniature tile floor in front of a tiny oven, or any warm wooden background you love. With her earthy palette, soft textures, and bakery basket, your Poppy Oven Bear will look ready to pull a tray of cookies from the oven and instantly bring cozy cottagecore vibes to your shelf or photo set.
