Crochet Tutorial: Farmer’s Market Mouse – Free Crochet Pattern

Intro
Make a sweet Farmer’s Market Mouse set in soft pastels: gray mouse with blush cheeks, butter–yellow Peter Pan–collar blouse with puff sleeves, olive–green pinafore dress, brown Mary Jane shoes, beige sun hat, plus a cream mesh tote filled with carrots and herbs, a tiny rustic scale in slate blue, and a “LOCAL PRODUCE” tag.

Materials

  • Yarn (Worsted/Category 4, cotton or matte acrylic for crisp stitches):
    1. A. Soft gray (mouse) ~150 g
    2. B. Butter yellow (blouse + shoe socks/edging) ~50 g
    3. C. Olive green (pinafore) ~70 g
    4. D. Beige/sand (sun hat, tote handle/mesh top) ~40 g
    5. E. Chocolate brown (Mary Jane shoes) ~40 g
    6. F. Cream (tote mesh) ~25 g
    7. G. Carrot orange + leafy green (veggies) small amounts
    8. H. Slate blue (scale) ~25 g
    9. I. Natural linen (produce tag, dial background) small amount
    10. J. Black and dark gray embroidery thread (mouth, dial marks, eye shine)
  • Hooks: 3.25 mm (D/3) for amigurumi; 3.5 mm (E/4) for clothing/hat/tote
  • 12 mm safety eyes (1 pair)
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill
  • Cardboard ovals (2 × ~4.2 cm) for shoe soles (optional)
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins
  • Small craft magnet (optional) for tote-to-hand hold
  • Fabric glue (optional) for the scale dial

Finished size: ~28–30 cm (11–12 in) tall.

  • inc – increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec – invisible decrease

Notes

  • Work in continuous rounds unless noted.
  • Use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff firmly but keep shoulders and wrists soft for natural drape.

Proportions & Assembly Notes

The head is a rounded oval with wide-set eyes; the muzzle is tiny and embroidered. Ears are large and cupped. Body is a steady cylinder tapering at the waist to fit the pinafore. Shoes are rounded Mary Janes with visible socks. The sun hat has a floppy brim. Mesh tote is cream with a beige rim and filled with three carrots.

Features: With J (black), embroider a tiny vertical nose then a relaxed smile curve. Surface-stitch two short blush bars with pale pink yarn if desired; add a white dot to each eye for shine.

Leg tubes (make 2):

  1. MR 6 (6)

    4–9. sc around (18). FO first leg. Work second leg and do not FO.

Join: ch 3, attach to first leg with sc; sc around first leg (18), sc across 3 ch, sc around second leg (18), sc across other side of 3 ch (42).
Next: sc around (42)
Next: [5 sc, dec] ×6 (36)
Next: sc around (36), FO. Stuff legs and lower torso, then ladder-stitch body on top.

Sock cuffs (Yarn B): Join at ankle, work 1 rnd sc; next rnd crab stitch for a subtle rib.


Mary Jane Shoes (Yarn E)

Sole:

  1. Ch 8; sc in 2nd ch from hook 6, 3 sc in last; rotate, sc 5, inc (16)
  2. inc, sc 5, inc ×3, sc 5, inc ×2 (22)
  3. BLO sc around (22)

Sides & top:

Butter Blouse with Peter Pan Collar (Yarn B, 3.5 mm)

Neckband:

  1. Ch 33, join to ring (32).
    2–3. sc around (32).

Puff sleeves (both sides):

  • Join yarn to any st; Row 1: sc 10 over ~8 sts, join (10).
  • Row 2: inc around (20).
  • Rows 3–4: sc around (20).
  • Row 5: [sc, dec] ×6, sc 2 (14).
  • Row 6: sc around (14). FO.
    Lightly stuff sleeve caps for volume.

Collar (worked flat, continuous around neckband):
Join yarn at center back of neckband.

  1. [sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc] into the next st to form one petal of the collar; sl st into next st; repeat around 8 times to create two rounded collar pieces meeting at front. FO and weave in.

Olive Pinafore Dress (Yarn C, 3.5 mm)

Skirt (waist-down):

  1. Ch 30, join to ring (29–30 sts gives a snug waist).

  4. [2 sc, inc] ×15 (60)
    5–7. sc around (60)
  5. [9 sc, inc] ×6 (66)
    9–10. sc around (66), FO.

Bodice:
Turn the piece upside down. Rejoin yarn into back loop ridge of Rnd 2 at center back.
Row 1: sc 30, ch 1 turn (30)
Row 2: sc 30 (30)
Row 3: sc 4, dec, sc 16, dec, sc 4 (28)
Row 4: sc 28, FO.

Waist trim: with C, surface-sl st along the seam between bodice and skirt to mimic the raised waist seam visible in the photo.

Straps: attach at front corners; ch 18 each; cross in back and sew to top edge. Straps should sit neatly over the blouse sleeves.

Hem touch: with B, surface-sc a delicate line at the very bottom edge (optional) to echo the butter-yellow peeking from the blouse.


Cream Mesh Tote (Yarn F for mesh; D for rim/handle, 3.5 mm)

Base (oval):

  1. With D, ch 8; sc 6, 3 sc in last; rotate, sc 5, inc (16)
  2. inc, sc 5, inc ×3, sc 5, inc ×2 (22)
  3. sc around (22), sl st.

Mesh body:
Switch to F.
4. ch 4, skip 1 st, sc in next around (approx 11–12 arches), join.
5–7. ch 4, sc into the chain space around to build mesh height.
Switch to D.
8. Work 1 rnd sc evenly around the top, placing 2 sc in each chain space.
9. Handle: ch 30, skip 6 sts, sc; continue around to other side, ch 30, skip 6, sc; sc around again to thicken handles. FO.

Carrots (make 3):

  • Root (G orange): MR 4, [sc, inc] ×2 (6); work 3 rnds sc; [sc, dec] ×2 (4); stuff lightly; sl st and FO.
  • Leaves (G green): ch 5, sl st back; make 3–4 fronds; sew to top of root.
    Tack carrots inside the tote. Add a small herb sprig by chaining 8 with green and adding tiny picots.

Attachment tip: sew a single invisible stitch through the mouse palm and tote handle or use a hidden magnet pair.

Rustic Scale Prop (Yarns H, I, J)

Base:

  1. With H, MR 6 hdc (6)

Body:
5–9. ch 1, sc around (18) to build a tapered cylinder; gentle dec on Rnd 9: [sc 2, dec] ×4 + sc 2 (14)

Neck & head plate:
10. sc around (14)
11. inc around (28) – this flares to the top plate
12. sc around (28), FO.

Dial:

  • With I, MR 6; [sc, inc] ×6 (18). FO leaving long tail.
  • Embroider tick marks and hands with J (black).
  • Sew to the front of the body. Add a tiny black French knot at the center.

“LOCAL PRODUCE” Tag (Yarn I + J)

  1. Ch 6; Row1: sc 5.
    2–4. ch1, turn, sc 5 to make a small rectangle.
    Shape the top by dec, sc, dec (3).
    Edge with sl st.
    Punch/crochet a tiny eyelet (ch 2, sl st to same spot).
    With J, embroider LOCAL PRODUCE in two lines. Tie to the scale or place beside the mouse.

Head–Body Assembly

  • Pin the head onto the body opening; ladder stitch closed with Yarn A.
  • Sew ears securely.
  • Position arms; stitch firmly so the right hand can support the tote.
  • Slide socks and shoes on; tack at the back of the ankles.
  • Dress mouse with the blouse first, then the pinafore.
  • Place the sun hat slightly tilted forward and tack at two points so it keeps its angle.

Finishing & Styling

  • Steam-block the pinafore hem and hat brim for soft curves.
  • Add a tiny hint of pastel blush to the cheeks for the photographed look.
  • Arrange the mesh tote so the carrots peek through—this is the key “aww” moment.
  • Set the scale and tag near the mouse’s right foot for the full farmer’s market vignette.

Care

Spot clean only. If you used cardboard soles or a magnet, avoid soaking. Reshape the hat while damp and lay flat to dry.
