Construction Overview

Bunny is worked bottom-up in the round from feet to head. Arms/ears/tail are separate and sewn on. Outfit pieces are: painter’s dress (puff sleeves in blue, ribbed ivory bib with two gold beads, skirt in ivory with blue intarsia/duplicate-stitch porcelain motifs and a rounded blue hem band), blue beret, skinny blue scarf, cream shoes with blue piping, plus palette and paintbrush props. Keep color placement and proportions true to the image for a perfect match.

Porcelain Painter Dress

Silhouette & color placement: short puff sleeves in blue, a ribbed ivory bib with two small gold “studs,” skirt in ivory featuring a blue teapot centered and scrolling vines left/right, then a rounded blue hem band.

Order of work

We’ll knit bodice and sleeves top-down in the round, attach a ribbed bib panel (flat), then continue seamlessly into the skirt with optional intarsia panel for the teapot or add motifs later by duplicate stitch (recommended for clarity). Back opening is omitted (stretchy neck), but you may split and add a snap if your gauge is tight.

Yoke & Sleeves

With CC2 (ivory), CO 64 sts; join; pm at CB.
Rnds 1–6: 1×1 rib for a neat neckline.
Switch to CC1 (blue) for sleeve section setup.

Raglan setup (place 4 markers to divide: 10 sleeve / 12 front / 10 sleeve / 12 back with 1 st raglan “spine” at each marker).
Rnd A (inc): k to marker, m1L, k1 (spine), m1R ×4; knit others in st st (adds +8).
Rnd B: knit around.

Repeat A–B three more times for gentle puff (total +32; sleeves +8 each). Now separate sleeves:

  • Place sleeve sts (each sleeve’s section + its two adjacent raglan spines) on waste yarn.
  • With CC2, CO 3 sts under each arm and knit only front + back (body) in the round.

Ribbed Bib (front)

On the front 24 sts, change to CC2 and work flat for 10 rows in k1, p1 rib, slipping first st each row for edges. BO these 24 sts. With a tapestry needle, stitch the bib neatly onto the front chest (top aligned to neckline rib), leaving the sides free to curve. Sew two tiny yellow beads/embroidered French knots centered vertically on the bib.

Rejoin in the round with CC2 at the underarm to start the skirt.

Skirt (ivory) with blue motifs

Rnd 1: (k9, m1L) ×6 → 66.
Rnd 3: (k10, m1L) ×6 → 72.
Rnd 5: (k11, m1L) ×6 → 78.
Rnd 7: (k12, m1L) ×6 → 84.
Rnd 9–22: k even to mid-calf length.

Porcelain motifs (blue):
Option A (intarsia in the round via steek): advanced.
Option B (recommended): chart the motifs and duplicate stitch them after knitting. Use CC1 to place a central teapot (roughly 22 sts wide × 20 rows tall) on the front, with scrolling vines (leaf pairs) to both sides and wrapping around. Keep motifs low on skirt as in the photo.

Rounded Blue Hem Band

Switch to CC1.
Rnd H1: k.
Rnd H2 (textured corded look): k1, p1 around.
Rnd H3: k all.
Rnd H4: (k3, kfb) repeat around to add subtle flare.
Rnds H5–H7: k.
BO loosely. Light steam to make the hem ring gently rounded.

Puff Sleeves (blue)

Return one sleeve’s sts to needles with CC1; pick up 3 sts over the underarm cast-on gap; join.
Rnd 1–6: k even (short sleeve cap).
Rnd 7 (puff gather): (k2, k2tog) around to reduce to a tidy cuff (adjust evenly to ~24 sts).
Rnd 8–10: work k1, p1 rib snug cuff. BO.
Repeat other sleeve.

Finishing for Dress

Weave ends carefully so the inside remains neat. Position bib flush against the chest; tack its bottom corners. If you prefer a back opening: before joining at the neck, work the first 6 rows flat; later add a tiny snap at the back.

Painter’s Beret (blue)

With CC1, CO 72 sts on circulars; join.

Brim: 1×1 rib 6 rnds.
Inc rnd 1: (k8, kfb) ×8 → 80.
Work 4 rnds even.
Inc rnd 2: (k9, kfb) ×8 → 88.
Work 6 rnds even.
Crown shaping: (k9, k2tog) ×8 → 80; next (k8, k2tog) ×8 → 72; continue every rnd until 16 sts; thread tail through and draw tight. Lightly steam. Set the beret low and slightly to the right.

Skinny Painter’s Scarf (blue)

CO 8 sts in CC1 on US 2.
Work garter stitch for 11″ (28 cm); BO. Tie once at side under the bib.

Mary Jane Shoes with Blue Piping

Row 1: kfb, k8, kfb (12).
Row 2: k.
Row 3: kfb, k10, kfb (14).
Row 4: k.
Row 5: kfb, k12, kfb (16).
Rows 6–9: k.
Row 10: k2tog, k12, ssk (14).
Row 11: k.
Row 12: k2tog, k10, ssk (12). BO. (Card insole optional for crispness.)

Uppers (ivory)
CO 24 sts.
Rows 1–2: k.
Row 3 (instep opening): k7, BO 10, k7.
Row 4: k7, CO 10, k7.
Row 5: k.
Row 6 (shape): k6, k2tog, k to last 8, ssk, k6 (22).
Row 7: p.
Row 8–9: garter. BO.

Blue piping & strap (CC1)

  • Work a 2-st i-cord long enough to run around each shoe’s topline; whipstitch along edge for the blue piping.
  • Strap: CO 16 sts, garter 3 rows; BO. Sew to inner side and fasten outer side with a tiny gold knot or stitch.

Attach uppers to soles easing at toe. Slip on.

Artist’s Palette & Paintbrush (Props)

Palette (tan, CC3)

CO 16 sts.
Rows 1–10: st st.
Row 11 (round off): ssk, k to last 2, k2tog.
Row 12: p.
Row 13: ssk, k to last 2, k2tog.
Row 14: p.
Row 15: BO. Using tail, overstitch around edges to smooth into an oval.
With a sharp tapestry needle, make a thumb hole: open a 3-st space near an edge by binding off and re-casting on a tiny slit; reinforce with whipstitch.
Duplicate-stitch paint blobs: yellow, rust, teal, blue-gray, cream.
For tiny “brushes” on the palette, knit 2-st i-cords in gray (6–8 rows) and secure parallel; add a cream tip to one, and a darker “bristle” blob to another.

Paintbrush

Wrap a toothpick or thin stick with a narrow strip of gray knitted tape (CO 4 sts, k 6 rows, BO; spiral wrap). Add a small rust-colored “ferrule” and cream “bristles” at the tip using embroidery floss. Stitch into the right paw.

Assembly

  1. Block lightly: dress hem/beret to relax, avoid steam on stuffed body.
  2. Attach ears high on the head so the beret nests between them.
  3. Sew arms at shoulder line with a forward angle.
  4. Sew tail at back for balance.
  5. Dress the bunny: slip on dress, tie scarf, put on shoes, and perch the beret.
  6. Place palette in the left paw (through the thumb hole) and the paintbrush in the right; secure each with a couple of hidden stitches for display.

Finishing & Customization

  • Stitch clarity: choose smooth DK yarns; avoid fuzzy fibers so the porcelain motifs and ribbed bib remain crisp in photos.
  • Motif accuracy: keep the teapot centered and sized ~22 sts wide, 20 rows tall; vines rise ~¾ skirt height and taper into small leaves.
  • Safety options: embroider facial features, avoid toothpicks or beads for small children; replace with fully knit items.
  • Fit tweaks: if your row gauge differs, add/subtract one skirt increase round to retain the same silhouette; hem band should remain gently rounded.
  • Color swaps: any monochrome duo works (charcoal on pearl, cobalt on white), but keep the ivory bib + blue skirt art for that painterly porcelain vibe.
  • Photo tip: position near a window on a wooden table; a close-up of the hem band and bib ribs showcases the texture that viewers love.
