Allotment Bunny (Plot 7) – Free Knitting Pattern

Introduction

Allotment Bunny is a soft, handheld knit toy ready for a day in the garden. Outfit: sage green short overalls over a cream-and-sage striped tee, sage bucket hat with a tiny sprout, green wrist cuffs, and chocolate Mary Jane shoes. Accessories: woven-look basket with carrots, small watering can, and a “PLOT 7” stake sign.

Materials

  1. Yarn: DK (Light Worsted, ~22 sts/4 in in St st), smooth wool or wool blend
    • Bunny (fur): 35–40 g oatmeal/cream
    • Tee & stripes: 10 g cream + 8 g sage
    • Overalls + hat + cuffs: 35 g sage green
    • Shoes: 12 g chocolate brown
    • Basket: 12 g wheat/tan + small amount darker tan for rim/handle
    • Carrots: small amounts orange + leafy green
    • Watering can: 8–10 g pale grey
    • Sign: scraps tan/wood + dark green for letters
    • Face: tiny amount black/brown thread; nose: soft brown
  2. Needles: 2.75 mm (US 2) dpns or circular for magic loop; optional 3.0 mm (US 2½) for hat brim and garment hems.
  3. Crochet hook 2.5–3 mm (optional for basket rim and chain ties).
  4. Safety eyes 6 mm (or embroider); toy stuffing; tapestry needle; 4 small 6–7 mm flat buttons for overall straps (or embroider faux buttons); thin florist wire (optional for ear pose).

Gauge & Size

  • Firm toy gauge: about 32 sts × 44 rows = 4 in/10 cm in St st on 2.75 mm needles.
  • Finished height: 8.5–9 in (21–23 cm) to ear tips.

Notes

  • Work the bunny in the round unless stated. Stuff as you go.
  • Small bobble (pc): (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1) all in same st, turn, p5, turn, k5, turn, p2tog, p1, p2tog, turn, sl1, k3tog, psso.
  • For children under 3, embroider the eyes and omit wire.

Construction Overview

  1. Knit legs → join for body → neck → head → ears.
  2. Knit arms separately; sew on.
  3. Outfit: striped tee (short sleeves), short overalls with front bib and two buttons, bucket hat with sprout, cuffs, and Mary Janes.
  4. Accessories: watering can, woven basket, three carrots, and a “PLOT 7” sign.
  5. Final assembly and shaping.

Bunny

Legs (make 2)

Using brown (shoe soles) and 2.75 mm needles, CO 10 sts. Work flat for the first 6 rows.

Row 1 (WS) purl.
Row 2 kfb, k8, kfb (12).
Row 3 p.
Row 4 kfb, k10, kfb (14).
Row 5 p.
Row 6 k2, (kfb, k1) ×5, k2 (19).
BO loosely.

With brown, pick up 19 sts around the sole edge and join in the round.
Rnd 1 knit.
Rnd 2 k5, k2tog ×2, k5 (17).
Rnd 3 knit.
Rnd 4 toe: k6, k2tog, k1, ssk, k6 (15).
Rnd 5 knit; switch to oatmeal/cream (fur) on next rnd.
Rnd 6 k around; begin ankle shaping: k3, k2tog, k5, ssk, k3 (13).
Rnd 7–9 knit; stuff shoe and toe.
Rnd 10 kfb, k11, kfb (15).
Rnd 11–16 knit, adding stuffing to ankle.
Rnd 17 k2tog, k11, ssk (13).
Rnd 18–22 knit; lightly stuff up to top of calf.
Leave sts on holder. Work second leg to same point and keep yarn attached on second leg.

Join for Body

From second leg: CO 3 sts (bridge), knit across first leg sts, CO 3, knit across second leg (32 sts). Place marker for center back.

Rnd 1–4 knit.
Rnd 5 (hip inc) k6, kfb ×4 (36).
Rnd 6–8 knit.
Rnd 9 k7, k2tog ×4 (32).
Rnd 10–12 knit; stuff hips.
Rnd 13 k6, k2tog ×4 (28).
Rnd 14 knit.
Rnd 15 k5, k2tog ×4 (24).
Rnd 16 knit; add stuffing.
Rnd 17 k4, k2tog ×4 (20).
Rnd 18 knit.
Rnd 19 k3, k2tog ×4 (16).
Rnd 20 knit; top up stuffing.
Rnd 21 k2, k2tog ×4 (12). Keep these 12 sts for the neck.

Head

Rnd 1 k1, kfb ×6 (18).
Rnd 2 k2, kfb ×6 (24).
Rnd 3 knit.
Rnd 4 k3, kfb ×6 (30).
Rnd 5 knit.
Rnd 6 k4, kfb ×6 (36).
Rnd 7–10 knit; begin stuffing.
Place 6 mm safety eyes 8–9 sts apart, about 7 rnds above the neck. Embroider a brown oval nose centered 1–2 rnds above the neck and a tiny smile.
Rnd 11 k5, kfb ×6 (42).
Rnd 12–14 knit; stuff firmly to a neat sphere.
Rnd 15 k5, k2tog ×6 (36).
Rnd 16 k4, k2tog ×6 (30).
Rnd 17 k3, k2tog ×6 (24).
Rnd 18 k2, k2tog ×6 (18).
Rnd 19 k1, k2tog ×6 (12).
Rnd 20 k2tog around (6). Break yarn, draw through, close and weave in. Pinch a little extra stuffing under the nose if needed and tack from the neck to define a rounded muzzle.

Ears (make 2)

Worked flat in fur color.

CO 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS) purl.
Row 2 kfb, k8, kfb (12).
Row 3 p.
Row 4 k2, m1L, k8, m1R, k2 (14).
Row 5 p.
Row 6 k2, m1L, k10, m1R, k2 (16).
Rows 7–14 St st.
Row 15 k2, ssk, k8, k2tog, k2 (14).
Row 16 p.
Row 17 k2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2 (12).
Row 18 p.
Row 19 k2, ssk, k4, k2tog, k2 (10).
Row 20 p.
Row 21 k2, ssk, k2, k2tog, k2 (8).
Row 22 p.
Row 23 ssk, k2, k2tog (6).
Row 24 p2tog, p2, p2tog (4).
BO. Fold slightly lengthwise; stitch to head about 1.25 in/3 cm apart, leaning forward a touch. Optional: sew a soft wire inside before closing.

Arms (make 2)

CO 6 sts in fur; knit I-cord for 8 rows (wrist).
Distribute to knit in the round.
Rnd 1 kfb in each st (12).
Rnd 2–6 knit.
Rnd 7 k2tog, k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k2 (9).
Rnd 8–14 knit; stuff just the hand and lower forearm, keeping top flexible.
Rnd 15 k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (6). Break yarn, draw through.


Clothing

Short-Sleeve Striped Tee (worked top-down)

With cream, CO 36 sts. Join to work in the round; pm.

Rnd 1–4 k1, p1 rib.
Rnd 5 (yoke) k2, m1L, k1, m1R ×9 (54).
Rnd 6 knit in sage.
Rnd 7 k3, m1L, k1, m1R ×9 (72) in cream.
Rnd 8 knit in sage.
Rnd 9 divide: k10 (back), place next 14 sts on holder (sleeve), CO 4 underarm, k24 (front), place next 14 on holder (sleeve), CO 4 underarm, k10 (48 sts in body).

Continue body in narrow 2-rnd stripes (cream then sage) for 8 rnds. BO loosely in cream.
Sleeves: return one sleeve’s 14 sts to needles, pick up 4 sts at underarm, work 4 rnds in stripe pattern (start with cream), then BO. Repeat for second sleeve. Tee is snug and fits under the overalls.

Short Overalls (sage)

Worked bottom-up in the round; front bib and straps are worked flat.

Leg bands: CO 64 sts, join; pm.
Rnd 1–4 k1, p1 rib.
Rnd 5 knit.
Rnd 6 shaping: k14, k2tog ×4 (60).
Rnd 7–9 knit.
Rnd 10 k13, k2tog ×4 (56).
Rnd 11–13 knit.
Rnd 14 k12, k2tog ×4 (52).
Rnd 15–17 knit.
Divide for legs: work 26 sts, place rest on holder. Working flat on these 26 for Right Leg:
Row 1 (WS) purl.
Row 2 k2, ssk, k20, k2tog, k2 (24).
Row 3 purl.
Row 4 k2, ssk, k16, k2tog, k2 (22).
Row 5 p.
Row 6 k2, ssk, k12, k2tog, k2 (20).
Row 7 p.
Row 8 k; BO.
Rejoin yarn to remaining 26 sts and repeat for Left Leg. Seam inner legs with mattress stitch to form short-leg opening.

Pick up and knit around leg openings: 44 sts each; work 3 rnds (k1, p1) rib for neat cuffs; BO.

Front bib: With RS facing, locate center 20 sts across front waist. Pick up and knit 20 sts.
Row 1 (WS) purl.
Row 2 k2, m1L, k to last 2, m1R, k2 (22).
Row 3 purl.
Row 4 k2, m1L, k to last 2, m1R, k2 (24).
Rows 5–10 Work even in St st; add a centered horizontal purl ridge on Row 7 for the pocket top look.
Row 11 (RS) work 1×1 rib for 2 rows; BO.

Straps (make 2): Pick up 5 sts at each top corner of the bib; work I-cord for 18 rows. Flatten the last row and BO. Take straps over shoulders and sew to back waistband. Sew on two tiny round buttons at the bib tops, or duplicate-stitch faux buttons.

Side seams: With sage, pick up and knit 2 rounds of k1, p1 rib along the waistline (in the round) if you want a tidy waistband edge; otherwise leave clean.

Bucket Hat with Sprout (sage)

With 2.75 mm needles, CO 72 sts. Join; pm.
Rnd 1–4 k1, p1 rib (band).
Rnd 5 k8, m1L ×9 (81).
Rnd 6–9 knit for crown depth.
Rnd 10 k7, k2tog ×9 (72).
Rnd 11 knit.
Rnd 12 k6, k2tog ×9 (63).
Rnd 13 knit.
Brim: switch to 3.0 mm;
Rnd 14 k7, m1L ×9 (72).
Rnd 15–17 knit.
Rnd 18 k8, m1L ×8 (80).
Rnd 19–21 knit; BO fairly tightly to prevent flare.
Sprout: With darker sage, embroider a tiny two-leaf sprout centered on front using duplicate stitch or chain stitch.

Wrist Cuffs (make 2, sage)

CO 18 sts; work in the round.
Rnd 1–4 k1, p1 rib.
Rnd 5 knit.
Rnd 6 BO. (They sit just above the hand like mini fingerless gloves.)

Mary Jane Shoes (brown, make 2)

CO 20 sts; knit flat 2 rows.
Row 3 kfb, k18, kfb (22).
Row 4 p.
Row 5 k2, (kfb, k1) ×6, k2 (28).
Pick up around to work in the round (like slippers).
Rnd 1 knit.
Rnd 2 k10, k2tog, k4, ssk, k10 (26).
Rnd 3 knit; test fit on foot.
Rnd 4 k9, k2tog, k4, ssk, k9 (24).
Rnd 5 knit.
Rnd 6 work collar: (k2, p1) around for 2 rnds.
Strap: Pick up 3 sts at inner side; knit I-cord 10 rows; attach to outer side forming a Mary Jane strap. Add a duplicate-stitch dot as a “button.”


Accessories

Watering Can (pale grey)

Body: CO 18 sts; join.
Rnd 1–8 knit.
Rnd 9 (base shaping) k1, k2tog around (12).
Rnd 10 k2tog around (6). Draw tight and close the bottom.
Top rim: At cast-on edge, pick up 18 sts; work 2 rnds k1, p1 rib; BO.

Spout: CO 4 sts; knit I-cord 12 rows. Switch to flat and increase to form the rose:
Row 1 kfb, k2, kfb (6).
Row 2 p.
Row 3 k1, m1, k4, m1, k1 (8).
Row 4 p.
Row 5 k2tog, k4, ssk (6).
Row 6 p2tog, p2, p2tog (4). BO. Sew spout to body slightly low and forward.

Handle: CO 3 sts; knit I-cord 20 rows; attach vertically at the back.

Basket (wheat/tan)

Bottom disc: CO 6 sts; join.
Rnd 1 kfb around (12).
Rnd 2 k1, kfb around (18).
Rnd 3 k2, kfb around (24).
Rnd 4 k3, kfb around (30).
Rnd 5 knit through back loops to turn the wall.
Rnd 6–11 knit even for a shallow bowl.

Rim: switch to darker tan; work (k1, p1) rib for 2 rnds; BO.
Handle: with darker tan, CO 4 sts, knit I-cord 22 rows; attach to opposite rim points.

Carrots (make 3)

Orange, worked in the round.
CO 6 sts.
Rnd 1–2 knit.
Rnd 3 k2, kfb ×2 (8).
Rnd 4–5 knit; start stuffing lightly.
Rnd 6 k3, kfb ×2 (10).
Rnd 7–10 knit.
Rnd 11 k3, k2tog ×2 (8).
Rnd 12 knit.
Rnd 13 k2, k2tog ×2 (6).
Rnd 14 k2tog around (3); break yarn, draw tight.
Leaves: with green, at top center pull through 3 short lengths; knot and trim to tufts, or crochet tiny chain leaves and sew on.

Plot Sign

Stake: Knit or cut a wooden skewer to 3.5 in (9 cm).
Sign face (tan): CO 12 sts; work 8 rows garter (knit every row); BO.
Embroider “PLOT 7” with dark green duplicate stitch. Glue or stitch the panel to the stake; secure stake to a small base or push into foam for display (keep sharp ends away from children).


Assembly & Finishing

  1. Attach Arms: Ladder stitch to body sides so cuff edges line up near the tee sleeves.
  2. Ears: Sew on top of head spaced ~3 cm apart, tipping slightly forward.
  3. Dress the Bunny: Put on tee first. Slip on overalls; align bib and sew strap ends to back waistband. Sew on two small buttons at the bib corners (or embroider).
  4. Shoes & Cuffs: Put the Mary Janes on; tack at heel if needed. Add the little cuffs.
  5. Hat: Seat bucket hat low on the brow; tack at two points so it stays.
  6. Props: Place watering can in right hand with a tiny hidden stitch through the handle. Hang basket from the left hand; position three carrots inside so tops peek out.
  7. Sign: Place the “PLOT 7” stake beside the bunny for display.

Blocking & Shaping

  • Body: Steam very lightly, using a cloth to avoid felting; hand-shape the cheeks by pinching while cooling.
  • Ears: Pinch base and steam to set a gentle forward tilt.
  • Hat & Overalls: Block flat to smooth edges; do not over-stretch the hat brim.
  • Shoes: Press the strap flat and shape the toe by gently nudging stuffing.

Safety & Care

  • Embroider eyes for small children; avoid wire and sharp stakes.
  • Secure all accessories if gifting as a toy.
  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap; reshape while damp and air-dry.

Styling & Photo Tips

  • Place the bunny on a stone slab or wooden board, with soil or potted herbs around.
  • Angle the watering can slightly forward; let the basket hang naturally.
  • Keep the sign just to the right of the bunny to match the scene.

Troubleshooting

  • Hat too loose/tight: Adjust CO by ±4 sts.
  • Overalls riding up: Add a hidden tack at side seams to the tee.
  • Shoes slipping: Thread a thin elastic inside the collar rnd.
  • Bib curls: Work the last two rows in k1, p1 rib or add a steam press with a cloth.
