Introduction

Meet the Coastal Picnic Pup: a soft cream amigurumi puppy dressed for a breezy garden picnic in sage-green short overalls, a buttery ruffle blouse, a sage bucket hat with a tiny seashell, a gingham mini backpack, and clean slip-on shoes.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Form & Proportion Analysis

  • Overall height: ~9.5–10 in (24–25.5 cm) with DK cotton and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Head: Slightly oval sphere; width ≈ 60–62% of body height. Eyes sit low and wide (8 mm safety eyes placed 8 sts apart between Rnds 12–13). Nose is a small dark oval centered 2 rnds below eyes; simple smile embroidered.
  • Ears: Droopy ovals, attached just below eye line and angled slightly forward.
  • Body: Compact cylinder tapering at the top, broader at hips.
  • Arms: Slim tubes, light stuffing, attached slightly forward so hands skim the bib pockets.
  • Legs/Feet: Straight legs rising from slip-on shoes; shoes are rounded with defined soles. Feet parallel for stable posing.
  • Outfit proportions:
    1. Blouse: Short sleeves with gentle puff; ruffle collar peeks above overalls.
    2. Overalls: High-waisted bib with two front buttons; short legs ending mid-thigh; two tiny front patch pockets. Texture is a tidy “woven” look (moss stitch).
    3. Hat: Low, relaxed crown with a soft (not stiff) brim that turns slightly downward. Seashell applique centered front.
    4. Backpack: Small rectangle with rounded top; gingham checks 4×4 stitch blocks; thin straps.
    5. Shoes: Minimalist slip-ons, cream uppers with slightly darker cream sole line.

Materials

  • Yarn (DK-weight cotton):
    1. C1 Cream (body, ears, shoes, overall edging)
    2. C2 Light butter yellow (blouse)
    3. C3 Sage green (overalls, backpack, hat)
    4. C4 Dark cocoa (nose, mouth embroidery)
    5. C5 White (gingham contrast, tiny highlight, optional shoe insole)
    6. C6 Pale sand (wood-tone basket & croissant prop; optional)
  • Hooks: 2.5 mm for amigurumi; 3.0 mm for garments/hat brim to keep drape (not floppy).
  • 8 mm safety eyes (or crochet circles).
  • Stuffing (polyfill).
  • 2 small 6–7 mm crocheted “buttons” (worked as tiny circles in C3 or wood-tone).
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors.
  • Optional: a small pouch of cotton scraps or pellets for foot weight (yarn-only enclosure provided).

Gauge & Size

Tight amigurumi fabric ~8 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm). Finished height ~10 in (25 cm). Keep garment gauge slightly looser for a natural clothing look.

Final Assembly & Dressing Order

  2. Pull overalls up; cross straps in back; sew ends to back waist. Attach tiny buttons to bib corners.
  3. Slide shoes on; check parallel stance.
  4. Seat hat slightly back so the brim shadows the eyes; tack with a stitch if desired.
  5. Add backpack—straps over shoulders, bag centered.
  6. Pose with basket and crocheted snacks for the full picnic scene.

Blocking, Styling & Care

  • Light steam (hover only) to relax the hat brim and set the overall hems.
  • Use fingers to round the ears and shoes.
  • Spot clean with a damp cloth; air dry flat.
  • For stability in photos, a tiny hidden stitch between shoe and table prop can help, or lean the pup gently against a cup or plant.

Troubleshooting

  • Overalls too snug/loose: Adjust foundation chain by ±2 (keep even count); keep moss stitch rhythm consistent.
  • Hat brim curls up too much: One extra increase round before Rnd 15, or block lightly.
  • Backpack puckers: Ensure you’re not pulling carried color too tight in gingham rows.
  • Head wobble: Add a small 6-st “neck peg” (tube) between body and head before sewing.

Quick Reference (Stitch Counts at a Glance)

  • Head max: 42 sts; close at 12-st neck opening.
  • Body max: 36 sts; waist 24 sts; close at 6.
  • Arms: 9-st tubes, 12 rows.
  • Legs: shoe 18-st upper; leg 12-st tube.
  • Blouse: neck 28 → divide sleeves; body 32; gentle puff via Rnd 9.
  • Overalls: waist 48; legs split 24/24; bib 14 sts wide; straps ch 18.
  • Hat: crown to 36; brim to 60.
  • Backpack: panel 17×12 rows; gusset 50×3 rows.
