Introduction

Meet the STEM-Lab Mouse—a science-loving amigurumi with a neat blouse and pleated skirt, a classic beret, and a translucent backpack filled with test tubes. Stage the scene with a tiny clipboard, Bunsen burner, and a test-tube rack for irresistible photos. Pattern uses US crochet terms and continuous rounds unless stated.

    6. F: Medium gray (sneaker uppers, burner base)
    7. G: Dark gray (burner stem details)
    8. H: Yellow (test-tube fill & flame highlight)
    9. I: Sky blue/cyan (test-tube fill)
    10. J: Brown (cork stoppers, test-tube rack)
  • Hook: 3.25–3.5 mm (US D/E) for firm fabric; optional 2.75–3.0 mm for minis.
  • Notions: 10 mm safety eyes (pair), stitch markers, tapestry needle, fiberfill, small cardboard ovals for shoe reinforcement (optional), thin plastic sheet for backpack windows (optional; crochet version provided), a touch of blush.

Finished Size & Gauge

  • Finished height: ~10.5–11.5 in (27–29 cm) including beret.
  • Gauge: ≈18 sc × 20 rows = 4 in/10 cm in the round with firm stuffing.

Pocket Frame: On front panel, surface-sl-st a rounded rectangle. Option A: applique a thin clear plastic window behind frame. Option B (fully crochet): fill the window with open mesh—ch1, [sc, ch1, sk1] repeated—then border with sc.

Zipper-look edging: one round of slip stitches in D along the opening.

Mini Lab Mice (A + tiny)

Small Mouse (~5 cm):
Head/Body combined: MR 6; [inc]×6 (12); 1 rnd even; [sc, inc]×6 (18); 1 rnd; [sc, dec]×6 (12); stuff; [dec]×6 (6).
Ears: MR 5 sc ×2; sew. Nose in pink; bead eyes or embroidered.
Tail: ch 18; sl st back; attach.
Micro Mouse (~2 cm): MR 4; [inc]×4 (8); 1 rnd; [dec]×4 (4); close; add knot ears and a 12-ch tail.


Assembly – Exact Placement

  1. Head ↔ Body: Pin, then whipstitch; add a bit of stuffing under the neck.
  2. Ears: Sew symmetrically on head sides just under beret edge; slight forward tilt.
  3. Arms: Attach at upper torso so hands rest at hip height. Tack left hand to the clipboard edge.
  4. Legs/Feet: Sew at body base with feet parallel and ~1 cm apart; check standing balance.
  5. Tail: Sew at center-back low, pointing slightly downward then sweeping back.
  6. Dress: Put blouse on, then skirt (waistline coral stripe visible).
  7. Beret: Seat level; band just above ears.
  8. Backpack: Center on back; secure straps over shoulders; tack lower strap ends at waist. Insert tubes and close pocket edge with a few hidden stitches so tubes show.
  9. Props: Place burner and rack to the mouse’s right; minis near feet, larger mini closer to viewer.

Face & Finishing

  • Add a tiny white eye highlight stitch; brush cheeks with soft blush.
  • Steam-shape skirt pleats and beret (hover iron; do not press acrylic).
  • Weave all ends; secure bows/straps with tiny invisible stitches for durability.
