Introduction

Seaside Gelato Bunny brings breezy Brighton vibes: sailor stripes, a mint pleated skirt that twirls, a cream beret, Mary Janes, and an irresistibly cute ice-cream-cone purse.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (DK; 22–24 sts/10 cm in stockinette):
    1. Body (fur) – oatmeal/cream, 40 g
    2. Shoes & skirt/top (mint) – mint, 45 g
    3. Stripes/collar/beret/soles – cream, 35 g
    4. Accent stripe (soft blue) – 10 g (optional—use mint if preferred)
    5. Purse cone – cognac brown, 15 g
    6. Purse scoop – cream, 5 g; cherry – pink, scrap
    7. Nose/mouth embroidery – brown, scrap
  • Needles:
    1. 3.0 mm (US 2½) for toy pieces;
    2. 3.25–3.5 mm (US 3–4) for clothing/accessories.
  • Notions: 2 safety eyes 8–9 mm; tapestry needle; markers; fiberfill; 3–4 small snaps (or hidden tacks) for dress back; blocking pins; a tiny bit of card for cone base (optional).

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • CO – cast on
  • BO – bind off
  • K / P – knit / purl
  • Kfb – knit front & back (inc 1)
  • M1L/M1R – make 1 left/right
  • K2tog – knit 2 together (dec)
  • SSK – slip, slip, knit (dec)
  • PM/SM – place/slip marker
  • Rnd(s) – round(s)
  • Rep – repeat
  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • Tbl – through back loop
  • I-cord – knitted cord (2 DPNs)
  • RS/WS – right/wrong side

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Gauge (in the round): 24 sts × 34 rnds = 10 cm/4″ on 3.0 mm for body; 22–23 sts × 32 rnds = 10 cm/4″ on 3.25–3.5 mm for clothes.
  • Finished size:28 cm (11″) standing; ≈ 19–20 cm (7½–8″) seated.

Pattern Notes

  • Work body/arms/head in the round at tighter gauge for firm stuffing.
  • Garments are removable; dress opens at back.
  • Stuff gradually and sculpt cheeks before closing head.
  • Safety: embroider eyes for under-3s.

The Bunny

Shoes (Mary Janes, mint & cream; 3.0 mm) – make 2

  1. Soles (cream): CO 8 sts, knit I-cord 6 rows → heel tab. Pick up 8 sts along tab edge, CO 824 sts on DPNs; join.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb, K10, Kfb, K2, Kfb, K10, Kfb28.
  3. Rnd 2: K all.
  4. Rnd 3: Kfb, K12, Kfb, K2, Kfb, K12, Kfb32.
  5. Rnd 4–5: K all; change to mint.
  6. Upper: K 5 rnds even.
  7. Instep opening: Split for strap: K10, BO 6, K6, BO 6, K10.
  8. Next rnd pick up 6 sts across each BO to rejoin in the round → 32 sts; K 2 rnds.
  9. Strap shaping: On next rnd, at center of each opening: K2tog, K2, SSK to gently round edges.
  10. Collar: K 2 more rnds; BO. Thread a tiny i-cord or ribbon later if you prefer a closure (the sample is fixed).

Legs (oatmeal; 3.0 mm) – make 2

  1. Pick up 28 sts evenly around each shoe opening; PM.
  2. Rnds 1–8: K all.
  3. (K6, Kfb) ×4 → 32 sts; K 10 rnds.
  4. (K6, K2tog) ×4 → 28 sts; K 4 rnds.
  5. Place first leg on holder; work second leg and do not cut.

Join for Body (oatmeal; 3.0 mm)

  1. With working yarn from leg 2, CO 4 sts, knit across leg 1, CO 4 sts, knit across leg 2 → 64 sts; PM at center back.
  2. Rnds 1–6: K all; begin stuffing.
  3. Hip taper: (K14, K2tog) ×4 → 60; K 3 rnds.
  4. Waist: (K13, K2tog) ×4 → 56; K 3 rnds.
  5. Belly fullness: (K6, Kfb) ×8 → 64; K 6 rnds even.
  6. Chest taper: (K6, K2tog) ×8 → 56; K 1 rnd.
  7. (K5, K2tog) ×8 → 48; K 1 rnd.
  8. (K4, K2tog) ×8 → 40; K 1 rnd.
  9. (K3, K2tog) ×8 → 32; K 1 rnd; leave long tail. Stuff firmly up to neck.

Arms (oatmeal; 3.0 mm) – make 2

  1. CO 10 sts, join; (K1, Kfb) ×5 → 15 sts.
  2. Rnds 2–10: K all.
  3. (K3, K2tog) ×3 → 12 sts; Rnds 12–20: K all (forearm).
  4. Hand tip: K2tog ×6 → 6; BO; stuff lightly.
  5. Optional tiny cuff: pick up 12 sts at wrist with cream, K1, P1 rib 4 rnds; BO.

Head (oatmeal; 3.0 mm)

  1. CO 8 sts, Kfb all → 16.
  2. (K1, Kfb) ×8 → 24.
  3. (K2, Kfb) ×8 → 32.
  4. (K3, Kfb) ×8 → 40.
  5. (K4, Kfb) ×8 → 48.
  6. Rnds 7–12: K all.
  7. Cheeks: (K5, Kfb) ×8 → 56; K 4 rnds even.
  8. Place 8–9 mm eyes between rnds 12–13, 9 sts apart; stuff gradually.
  9. Crown: (K5, SSK) ×8 → 48; K 1 rnd.
  10. (K4, SSK) ×8 → 40; K 1 rnd.
  11. (K3, SSK) ×8 → 32; K 1 rnd.
  12. (K2, SSK) ×8 → 24; stuff cheeks a touch;
  13. (K1, SSK) ×8 → 16; SSK ×8 → 8; BO; weave in.
  14. Embroider small triangular nose and short Y mouth with brown.

Ears (oatmeal; 3.0 mm) – make 2

  1. CO 8 sts; (K1, Kfb) ×4 → 12; K 2 rnds.
  2. (K2, Kfb) ×4 → 16; K 8 rnds.
  3. (K6, K2tog) ×2 → 14; K 4 rnds.
  4. (K5, K2tog) ×2 → 12; K 6 rnds; BO. Flatten; do not stuff. Sew 10–15° outward tilt.

Assembly (body)

  • Ladder-stitch head to body opening using the long tail; sculpt neck smoothly.
  • Stitch arms slightly forward on chest line so hands hover near skirt.
  • Weave ends; light steam-block.

Clothing & Accessories (exact to photo)

Sailor Dress (striped bodice + pleated skirt; mint/cream; 3.25–3.5 mm)

Construction: bodice knit in the round to underarm; split for flat back opening; cap sleeves; sailor collar added; skirt picked up and worked downward with pleat increases; closes with hidden snaps.

Bodice

  1. With mint, CO 66 sts, join; K 1 rnd, PM at CB.
  2. Work Stripe Set A (6 rnds): Cream 2 rnds / Mint 2 rnds / Cream 2 rnds.
  3. Rnds 7–18: Work Stripe Set B twice: Mint 2 / Cream 2 / Mint 2.
  4. Underarm shaping: (K9, K2tog) ×6 → 60 sts.
  5. Divide for back opening: At CB, work flat from here. RS row: K 30, turn; work back and forth on 30 sts (Right half).
    • Right half: Work st st 10 rows; at neckline edge dec 1 st every RS row ×3 (K2tog) → 27 sts. Put on holder.
    • Left half: Rejoin yarn at CB. Work mirror shaping with SSK at neckline edge → 27 sts.
  6. Shoulder join: Graft 6 sts per side or BO and seam.

Cap Sleeves

  • Pick up 28 sts evenly around each armhole; K1, P1 rib 3 rows; BO in rib for a tidy cap.

Sailor Collar (cream)

  1. Pick up around neckline 60 sts (focus more sts at back than front).
  2. Row 1 (RS): K across.
  3. Rows 2–6: Work garter (K every row).
  4. Rows 7–14: At each front corner, inc 1 st (M1L or M1R) every RS row to form the two pointed laps; keep back straight.
  5. BO loosely.
  6. Neck tie (cream): CO 5 sts, K 20 cm in garter; BO; tie a small knot at center front under collar points.

Back Closure

  • Add 3–4 snaps between the two back edges or use invisible whip tacks if the piece is display-only.

Skirt (mint with cream bands)

  1. With mint, pick up 120 sts around bodice hem; join.
  2. Rnds 1–6: K all.
  3. Pleat Increase Rnd: (K4, M1L, K4, M1R) ×15 → 150 sts.
  4. Rnds 8–16: K all (flowy flare).
  5. Cream band: switch to cream, K 4 rnds.
  6. Mint block: K 10 rnds in mint.
  7. Cream band #2: K 4 rnds in cream.
  8. Mint hem: K 6 rnds, then P 1 rnd (fold line), then K 6 rnds; BO. Fold inward for a neat weighted hem.

Beret (cream; 3.25–3.5 mm)

  1. CO 8 sts, join; (Kfb) around → 16.
  2. (K1, Kfb) ×8 → 24.
  3. (K2, Kfb) ×8 → 32.
  4. Continue crown inc every other rnd to 72 sts.
  5. K 6 rnds even.
  6. Band: (K2tog, K7) around → 64; work K1, P1 rib 6 rnds; BO in rib.
  7. Stalk nub: I-cord 3 sts for 5 rows; tug to form nub; stitch on center. Tilt slightly left and tack at two points.

Scarf (mint; 3.25 mm)

  • CO 6 sts; work garter 24–26 cm; BO. Tie once with short tails front-center.

Ice-Cream-Cone Crossbody Purse

Cone (cognac; 3.25 mm)

  1. CO 12 sts, join.
  2. Waffle texture (worked in 4-rnd sets):
    • Rnd 1: K2, P2 around.
    • Rnd 2: K2, P2 around.
    • Rnd 3: P2, K2 around.
    • Rnd 4: P2, K2 around.
  3. Shape: After two texture sets, (K4, K2tog) ×2 → 10; work 1 rnd in pattern.
  4. Next: (K3, K2tog) ×2 → 8; work 1 rnd.
  5. (K2, K2tog) ×2 → 6; work 1 rnd; BO, leaving top open.
  6. Lightly line the cone with card if desired.

Scoop (cream; 3.25 mm)

  1. CO 6 sts, Kfb all → 12.
  2. (K1, Kfb) ×6 → 18.
  3. (K2, Kfb) ×6 → 24.
  4. Rnds 5–8: Seed stitch (K1, P1 around; offset every rnd) to give puffy texture.
  5. Shaping: (K2, K2tog) ×6 → 18; next rnd (K1, K2tog) ×6 → 12; stuff softly; K2tog ×6 → 6; BO.
  6. Stitch scoop onto the cone rim, letting it “sit” slightly forward.

Cherry (pink; scraps; 3.0 mm)

  • CO 4 sts, Kfb all → 8; next rnd K; K2tog ×4 → 4; BO; add a dot of stuffing; sew atop scoop.

Strap (caramel i-cord)

  • I-cord 3 sts for 28–30 cm; attach inside cone sides. Wear from right shoulder to left hip.

Final Assembly Order (to match the photo precisely)

  1. Put on Mary Janes; align instep cutouts.
  2. Dress bunny in striped bodice (back opening), then attach skirt if not already joined; snap closed.
  3. Tie sailor neck garter tie under collar points; lay mint scarf outside collar (short knot).
  4. Sling ice-cream purse across from right shoulder → left hip; tack a hidden stitch at shoulder so strap lies flat.
  5. Angle beret slightly left; secure with 1–2 hidden tacks.
  6. Pose ears upright and slightly outward.

Quality Control Checklist (1:1 match)

  • Head/Body ratio: head slightly larger than body (≈1.1:1).
  • Eye spacing: wide-set (~1.8–2 cm on the sample).
  • Dress stripes: even blocks across bodice; collar points symmetrical.
  • Skirt bands: cream bands crisp; hem folded on purl line.
  • Shoes: oval cutouts centered; soles cream, uppers mint.
  • Purse position: cone tip rests near left side of skirt; strap not twisted.
  • Beret: crown domed, band snug; stalk centered.

Care

Spot-clean garments; avoid soaking stuffed body. If for young children, replace safety eyes and avoid small snaps.
