Bunny “Tea-Room Host” – Free Knitting Pattern

Introduction

Meet the Bunny “Tea-Room Host”—a cozy knit rabbit in a blush cable vest, gray pleated skirt, cream bow tie, and classic Mary Janes, serving a tiny tea set on a knitted tray. The proportions and placements below ensure your finished bunny matches the image 1:1.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (DK / Light #3)
    1. Bunny main: wool-blend natural/almond 90–100 g
    2. Nose/mouth embroidery: light brown scraps
    3. Eyes: safety eyes 8 mm (or embroider)
    4. Vest: dusty pink 35–40 g
    5. Skirt: mid gray 30–35 g
    6. Bow tie & socks: cream 15–20 g
    7. Shoes: chocolate brown 25–30 g
    8. Tray + doily + tea set + satchel: oatmeal, cream, pale pink scraps
  • Needles
    1. 2.75 mm (US 2) circular/DPNs for toy pieces
    2. 3.25 mm (US 3) circular/DPNs for garments & props
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, fiberfill, one 8–10 mm wooden button, small piece of plastic canvas or cardboard (tray), optional pipe cleaner for ear shaping (omit for children), waste yarn.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Toy gauge (US 2): ~28–30 sts × 40–42 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette in the round, firm.
  • Garment gauge (US 3): ~24–26 sts × 36–38 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette.
  • Finished height: ~30–31 cm standing (ears excluded).

Pattern Notes

  • Work all toy parts in the round unless noted.
  • Stuff gradually and firmly.
  • Safety: embroider eyes for under-3s.
  • Use invisible vertical mattress stitch for neat joins.
  • Keep yarn tails inside pieces for extra stuffing.

The Bunny

Head (start at crown; US 2; almond)

  1. CO 8 sts, join in the round, pm.
  2. kfb around (16).
  3. (k1, kfb) ×8 (24).
  4. (k2, kfb) ×8 (32).
  5. (k3, kfb) ×8 (40).
  6. (k4, kfb) ×8 (48).
    7–16. k around (48).
  7. (k7, kfb) ×6 (54).
    18–19. k around (54).
  8. Eye rnd: k 8, pm left-eye position; k 14, pm right-eye position (markers 14 sts apart), k to end.
  9. k around (54). Insert safety eyes between Rnd 20–21 at markers; secure washers later.
  10. (k7, k2tog) ×6 (48).
  11. k around (48).
  12. (k6, k2tog) ×6 (42).
  13. k around; begin stuffing firmly.
  14. (k5, k2tog) ×6 (36).
  15. (k4, k2tog) ×6 (30).
  16. (k3, k2tog) ×6 (24).

  19. k2tog around (6). Cut long tail, draw through rem sts, pull closed.

Work from base upward for neat join.

  1. CO 12 sts, join.
    2–4. k around (12).
  2. (k2, kfb) ×4 (16).
    6–10. k around (16).
  3. (k3, kfb) ×4 (20).
    12–16. k around (20).
  4. (k3, ssk) ×4 (16).
    18–22. k around (16).
  5. (k2, ssk) ×4 (12).
    24–26. k around (12).
  6. (k1, ssk) ×4 (8).
  7. k around (8).
  8. ssk ×4 (4). Cut long tail, thread through 4 sts, pull to point. Optional: insert pipe cleaner core wrapped with yarn for poseable ears. Flatten gently.
    Attach: Sew bases 9 sts apart across top of head between Rnds 8–10, slight outward tilt.

Body (US 2; almond)

Work bottom-up.

  1. CO 12, join.
  2. (k1, kfb) ×6 (18).
  3. (k2, kfb) ×6 (24).
  4. (k3, kfb) ×6 (30).
  5. (k4, kfb) ×6 (36).
    6–10. k around (36).
  6. (k5, kfb) ×6 (42).
    12–18. k around (42).
  7. (k5, k2tog) ×6 (36).
    20–22. k around (36).

    7–10. k around (16).
  4. (k2, k2tog) ×4 (12).
    12–18. k around (12). Lightly stuff to mid-forearm only.
  5. k1, k2tog ×4 (8).
  6. k around (8); cut long tail, draw through sts to close.
    Sew to body at Body Rnd 26, 19–20 sts apart across front.

Legs & Feet (make 2; US 2; almond to ankle; shoe added later)

  1. CO 10, join.
  2. (k1, kfb) ×5 (15).
  3. (k2, kfb) ×5 (20).
    4–10. k around (20).
  4. (k3, k2tog) ×4 (16).
    12–14. k around (16). Stuff firmly.
  5. k2tog ×8 (8). Draw through to close.
    Sew legs to lower body, parallel, toes forward.

Clothing & Accessories

Cream Sock Cuffs (worked onto leg; US 3; cream)

Pick up 20 sts around each ankle; work k1, p1 rib for 4 rnds. BO loosely.

Mary Jane Shoes (make 2; US 3; brown)

Soles

  1. CO 6; work flat in garter:
    • Row 1: kfb, k4, kfb (8)
    • Row 2: k all.
    • Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb (10)
    • Row 4: k all.
    • Row 5: kfb, k8, kfb (12)
      BO. Make 2 per shoe; whipstitch WS together for sturdy sole.
      Upper (in the round)
  2. Pick up 36 sts evenly around sole edge; join.
    3–4. k around.
  3. Toe shaping: k7, ssk, k14, k2tog, k7 (34).
  4. k around.
  5. k6, ssk, k14, k2tog, k6 (32).
  6. k around.
  7. Instep: work flat over front 16 sts for 6 rows in stockinette, ending RS; leave rem sts on hold.
  8. Join: pick up 6 sts down instep side, k across 16 held sts, pick up 6 up other instep side, k rem held sts in round (total ≈ 44).
  9. k around 1 rnd; Eye-strap: BO 18, k8, BO 18.
  10. Strap (over 8 live sts): Row 1 RS k across; Row 2 k across; Row 3 k2tog, k4, ssk (6); Row 4 k across; Row 5 k2tog, k2, ssk (4). BO.
    Sew strap end to opposite side; embroider a tiny button knot. Pop onto feet.

Pleated Skirt (US 3; gray)

Worked in the round top-down with wide mock pleats.

  1. CO 90 sts; join, pm.
    2–4. Work k1, p1 rib (waistband).
  2. Pleat setup: (k6, p2) ×10.
    6–22. Maintain pattern; on every 4th rnd work k5, kfb, p2 inside the knit panels only to deepen pleats (add 10 sts total across Rnds 8, 12, 16).
    23–26. Plain stockinette preserving purl gutters (now ~120 sts).
  3. Hem: p one rnd, then k one rnd, then BO loosely for a clean fold. Thread a thin elastic through the waistband if desired.

Cable Vest (US 3; dusty pink)

Back (flat)

  1. CO 38. Work k1, p1 rib for 4 rows.
  2. Charted body pattern width 38 sts:
    • Edge 2 sts in stockinette each side; inside: p2, C4B (2/2 cable), p2, k4, p2, C4B, p2, k4, p2, C4B, p2.
      Work even for 26 rows.
  3. Armhole shaping: BO 2 at beg next 2 rows (34). Then ssk/k2tog 1 st each armhole side every RS row ×2 (30).
  4. Work even to row 44 from hem.
  5. Shoulders: BO 6, work 18, BO 6. Place 18 center sts on holder for back neck.

Front (flat, V-neck)

  1. CO 38; work rib 4 rows as back.
  2. Work same cable paneling for 12 rows.
  3. V-neck shaping begins: mark center; on next RS, k2tog at center; on following RS rows, dec 1 st each neck edge every 2 rows ×10 while continuing armhole shaping as for back starting when front measures same as back to armhole.
  4. Continue until front length matches back to shoulders; each shoulder should have 6 sts. BO shoulders.

Neck & Arm Bands

  • Shoulders seam with mattress st.
  • Neckband: With RS, pick up evenly around V-neck and back neck (approx 78–82 sts). Work k1, p1 rib 4 rows; at V, k2tog tbl at the point every RS to keep crisp V; BO stretchy.
  • Armhole bands: pick up ~54–58 sts around each; work k1, p1 rib 3 rows; BO.
  • Add 1 wood button at vest center; create a small loop by chaining with yarn tail or picking up 3 sts and i-cord 2 cm on opposite side.

Bow Tie (US 3; cream)

Main bow: CO 8; work stockinette 22 rows. BO; seam short ends to form a ring; flatten to a bow.
Wrap: CO 6; work garter 6 rows; wrap tightly around middle, stitch to secure.
Sew bow under chin centered against vest neckline.

Tray, Doily, Teapot & Scone (props; US 3)

Tray (oatmeal)

  • CO 8; work garter 20 rows; BO. Cut a matching oval of plastic/cardboard; whipstitch knit around insert to stiffen.
  • Rim: PU sts all around edge; work 2 rnds k1, p1 rib; BO.
    Doily (cream)
  • CO 24 in the round; (yo, k2tog) around 2 rnds; final rnd: k1, yo around; BO—lightly block to ruffle.
    Teapot (cream)
  • Body: CO 6, kfb around (12), (k1, kfb) ×6 (18), (k2, kfb) ×6 (24); k 6 rnds; (k2, k2tog) ×6 (18), (k1, k2tog) ×6 (12), k2tog around (6). Stuff.
  • Lid: CO 6, kfb around (12), k 2 rnds, k2tog around (6); sew on.
  • Spout: CO 6 i-cord 6 rows; curve and attach.
  • Handle: CO 16 i-cord 4 rows; attach.
    Scone (beige + light tan)
  • Bottom: CO 10, stockinette 6 rows; BO.
  • Top: work same in light tan; sew edges together stuffing lightly; embroider cream line as “clotted cream”.

Mini Satchel (pale pink; US 3)

  • Body: CO 18; stockinette 18 rows; fold at row 12 to form base (12 rows front, 6 rows flap).
  • Gussets: PU 12 sts along each side; knit 3 rows in garter; seam to front edges.
  • Flap: round corners with k2tog at both edges for 2 rows; BO.
  • Handle/strap: i-cord CO 3; knit to 18 cm; attach sides. Add small purl-ridge detail on flap edge.

Assembly & Finishing

  1. Join head to body; keep seam hidden by vest V-neck.
  2. Sew ears at mapped points with slight outward tilt.
  3. Attach arms at Body Rnd 26.
  4. Dress order: skirt → vest → bow tie → socks → shoes.
  5. Place bunny seated, knees at table edge; balance tray on lap (a tiny hidden stitch through vest can anchor tray if needed).
  6. Set satchel to the side.

Blocking & Styling

  • Light steam (no direct iron) on skirt pleats to sharpen folds.
  • Wet-block vest flat to open cables slightly.
  • Shape ears with gentle curve; if un-wired, steam-set.
  • Smooth smiles and nose embroidery; add a tiny white highlight stitch on each eye for sparkle.

Quality Control Checklist (match the photo)

  • Eyes on Head Rnd 20, 14 sts apart; nose on Rnds 22–23.
  • Ears 11–12 cm, bases 9 sts apart, slight outward angle.
  • Vest: pink cables centered; neat V-neck; single wood button.
  • Skirt: clear vertical pleats; hem below knee.
  • Shoes: Mary Jane strap visible; cream sock cuffs peeking.
  • Bow tie centered and snug.
  • Tray with doily, teapot, and scone sits naturally on lap; satchel upright beside bunny.
  • Overall palette: cream/almond body; pink, gray, brown, and cream accessories in soft natural light.
