Introduction

Meet the Detective Postie Bunny: a soft-eared, curious little sleuth dressed in a tweed-look vest and shorts, cable-rib boots, a neat newsboy cap, a sunny bow tie, and a crossbody satchel with a rolled “map.” In one paw he holds a small magnifying glass prop. This pattern is written to match the photo exactly: tall standing bunny in cream, heathered warm gray clothing, mustard bow, and russet-brown leather-look accessories. The fabric is dense and tidy so the stockinette V-stitches read clearly and the shaping stays crisp.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (DK/Light Worsted, non-fuzzy wool or wool blend):
    1. A. Cream (main bunny) – ~120 g

    4. D. Mustard (bow tie & crossbody strap) – ~15 g
    5. E. Deep Green (magnifier ring & handle) – ~10 g
    6. F. Off-white scrap for “map” (small rectangle)
  • Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) circulars or DPNs for tight fabric in the round; 3.25 mm straight needles optional for flat pieces; 3.5 mm (US 4) for hat brim option.
  • Notions:
    1. Safety eyes 8 mm (x2)

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Gauge (stockinette in the round): 26 sts × 36 rnds = 10 cm / 4 in on 3.25 mm needles with DK yarn, gently blocked for garments only.
  • Finished Size: Standing height ~28 cm (11 in); seated ~21 cm. Head height ~10.5 cm; body (shoulder to boot top) ~12.5 cm. Ear length (base to tip) ~9.5 cm. Proportions: head : body ≈ 1.05 : 1 to match the photo’s balanced, slightly babyish silhouette.

Pattern Notes

  • Work pieces in the round unless stated.
  • Stuff firmly but not hard; shape as you go, especially nose bridge and cheeks.
  • Color names reference the photo; swap if desired but keep values (light body, medium gray clothes, warm brown leather-look) to preserve the look.
  • The bunny stands by proportion and boot shaping; for extra stability, add discreet disks in soles.
  • Placement map:
    1. Eyes: between Head Rnds 22–23, 10 sts apart (center-to-center).
    2. Nose/mouth: centered on Rnd 25, embroidered small inverted “Y”.
    3. Ears: attach along crown centered line, bases 6 sts apart; slight forward tilt.

  • Sew ears to head crown, bases 6 sts apart, leaning slightly forward.
  • Weave all ends.
  • Lightly needle-sculpt eye dips if needed by taking thread from neck to eye points and back; tie under vest area.

Clothing – Shorts (B)

Worked in the round from top down to above knees with folded hem.
CO 60; join.
Rnds 1–6: k1, p1 rib (waistband).
Rnd 7: k.
Rnd 10: k14, m1 ×4 = 64 (hip ease).
Rnds 11–18: k.
Divide for legs: split to 32/32; work each leg separately.
Leg: k 10 rnds even; final 4 rnds in k1, p1 rib to echo rolled cuff in photo. BO in rib. Repeat for second leg.
Add tiny faux fly by duplicate stitch vertical line at center front.

Clothing – Bow Tie (D)

Knot: CO 6, work 10 rows garter, BO.
Wings: CO 10, work 14 rows stockinette ending RS; BO.
Fold short edges of wing to meet center; cinch with knot strip and sew firmly. Stitch bow to neck just under head.

Accessories – Satchel & Strap (C + D)

Bag body (C): CO 20; work 24 rows stockinette. Fold row 16 to make base (8 rows for flap).
From base fold, seam sides for 8 rows to create pocket; leave top 8 rows as flap.
Flap shaping: Row 1 RS: k2tog, k to last 2, ssk. Row 2 WS: p. Repeat Rows 1–2 twice → 12 sts. BO.
Strap (D, as in photo it appears russet strap but we use mustard for contrast to match bow? The photo shows russet bag with mustard bow and rust-brown strap; work strap in C or D as you prefer. To match photo: strap = D Mustard? Actually strap is russet-brown—use C.)
Strap: k-i-cord over 3 sts to length ~32–34 cm (fits left shoulder to right hip). Sew ends: one to back top corner of bag, the other to opposite top corner; then tack strap across bunny to lay diagonally left-shoulder → right-hip. Add tiny snap under flap if desired.
Map (F): Knit or cut felt rectangle 3 × 5 cm; roll and tie with a small yarn ring. Insert in satchel leaving scroll peeking out.

Accessory – Magnifying Glass Prop (E + optional acetate)

Ring: With E, CO 36, join without twist.
Rnds 1–3: k.
Rnd 4: p (creates inner shadow ridge like a frame).
Rnds 5–7: k. BO loosely.
Optionally, cut a circle of acetate slightly larger than inner diameter; whipstitch to inside.
Handle: Work 4-st i-cord for 5 cm; sew to ring at a slight angle.
Tack handle into the right paw with a few invisible stitches so it “holds” the prop.

Final Assembly & Placement Map (Exact to Photo)

  • Dress bunny in shorts first, then vest, then bow tie.
  • Put on cap, tug crown slightly forward.
  • Sling satchel from left shoulder to right hip, letting bag sit across Body Rnds 18–24. Ensure flap points to center front; the rolled map peeks out.
  • Place magnifier in right paw, handle angled downward; one or two stitches through palm secure it invisibly.
  • Steam-set garment edges only (do not steam the bunny).
  • Check proportions:
    1. Head height ≈ 10.5 cm; body (shoulder to boot rib) ≈ 12.5 cm.
    2. Ear length ≈ 9.5 cm; ears slightly forward.
    3. Eye distance: 10 sts apart horizontally; mouths a small inverted “Y” centered under nose.
    4. Arm drop: hands align with short leg seams.
    5. Boot cuff shows cream rib above shoe texture just like photo.

Finishing Touches / Tips

  • For the visible knit textures in the photo, keep tension even and avoid fuzzy yarns; smooth, tightly spun DK shows stitch definition best.
  • Lightly brush the cap brim with steam to curve; pinch the vest V-neck to lie flat against the bow.
  • If the bunny leans, insert a bamboo skewer up through one boot into the body core before closing the head; or add heavier disks to soles.
  • For the “leather” look, use russet wool and block the satchel flat before seaming; a little beeswax rubbed on the strap gives subtle sheen (for display pieces only).
  • Safety: props like the acetate lens and pebble soles are display-only and not suitable for small children.

Exact Color Map (to match the photo)

  • Body/Ears/Arms/Legs above boots: A Cream.
  • Vest, Shorts, Cap: B Heather Warm Gray.
  • Boots & Satchel: C Russet/Brown.
  • Bow Tie (and only the bow): D Mustard.
  • Magnifier: E Deep Green (ring + handle).
  • Map: F Off-white.

Yardage & Checklist

  • A Cream ~120 g (≈300 m)
  • B Heather Gray ~80 g (≈200 m)
  • C Russet/Brown ~60 g (≈150 m)
  • D Mustard ~15 g (≈35 m)
  • E Deep Green ~10 g (≈25 m)
  • F Scrap for map
You should have: 2 boots with rib cuffs, joined legs and body, separate head with embroidered features, 2 arms, 2 ears, 1 tail; plus cap, vest with two buttons, shorts, bow, satchel with strap and flap, magnifier, and rolled map.

Care

Spot clean only. Keep the hat softly stuffed when stored to preserve its shape; remove acetate lens if washing is required.
