Free Pattern: Knitted Lambs in Overalls

Introduction

Say hello to the sweetest pair of knitted lambs in overalls—a beginner-friendly soft toy project inspired by your photo. Each lamb has a plush, woolly head, a simple oval body, perky ears, and cute dungarees (blue or pink) with black “boots.” The instructions below are written step-by-step with round counts, stitch counts, and clear assembly so a new knitter can succeed on the first try.

The toys are worked mostly in the round for a smooth finish, with small flat pieces for the ears and overall straps. The body and head are knit as one piece from the feet up, which means less seaming and a sturdy toy for play. The fluffy head effect comes from using a soft faux-fur or boucle yarn just for the head section; the rest is regular DK/light-worsted yarn for easy handling.

Finished height: ~16–18 cm (6¼–7 in) from boots to head (not including ears). Size will vary with yarn, needles, and stuffing.

This project is family-friendly and compliant with platform policies: there are no adult themes, no risky instructions—just cozy crafting!

Materials

Yarn (DK / Light Worsted, smooth and easy-care is ideal):

  • A – Cream/White (body, arms, ears): ~40 g
  • B – Faux-fur or Boucle White (fleece for head): ~10–15 g
  • C – Black/Charcoal (boots and nose): ~10 g
  • D – Overall Color (choose blue or pink): ~25–30 g
  • Optional: a small scrap of green/red for a tiny flower applique

Tip: When you shop DK yarn, look for a plied acrylic/wool blend for durability and neat stitches. For the fluffy head, any soft faux-fur/eyelash/boucle that knits close to DK/aran will work because we use it over a small section.

Needles & Tools

  • 3.25 mm (US 3) DPNs or a 60–80 cm circular for magic loop (main)
  • 3.75–4.0 mm (US 5–6) needles for the faux-fur head section (bigger needle helps the texture bloom)
  • Stitch markers (at least 2), row counter (optional)
  • Tapestry needle and scissors
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • 6 mm safety eyes or black yarn for embroidered eyes (embroider for toys given to children under 3)
  • Small crochet hook (3–3.5 mm) for picking up stitches and making button loop (optional)
  • Sewing pins and a pet slicker brush or soft toothbrush (for fluffing the head if needed)

Gauge (not critical for toys): ~24–26 sts × 32–36 rows = 10 cm/4 in in stockinette on 3.25 mm. Work firmly so stuffing doesn’t peek through.

Abbreviations & Techniques

  • CO cast on BO bind off
  • K knit P purl
  • St st stockinette in the round (all knit) or flat (K RS, P WS)
  • Rnd(s) rounds Row(s) rows St(s) stitches
  • pm/sm place/slip marker
  • Kfb knit front and back (inc 1)
  • M1L/M1R make 1 left/right (optional alternative to kfb)
  • K2tog knit two together (right-leaning dec)
  • SSK slip, slip, knit (left-leaning dec)
  • Inc/Dec increase/decrease
  • Pick up and knit for neat joins on straps/edges
  • Mattress stitch for invisible seams

If you’re new to magic loop or DPNs, choose the method you find easiest; both work perfectly here.

  1. Feet & Legs: knit two identical legs from the boots up.
  2. Join for Body: connect legs and knit the body upward.
  3. Neck & Head: decrease to neck, switch to the fluffy yarn for the head, then decrease to close.

Step-by-Step Pattern with Stitch Counts

1) Boots & Legs (make 2)

With C (black) and 3.25 mm needles, CO 8 sts. Join in the round, pm for start.

  • Rnd 1: Kfb around – 16 sts
  • Rnd 2: K1, kfb around – 24 sts
  • Rnd 3: K around
  • Rnd 4: K2, k2tog around – 18 sts (taper to ankle)
  • Rnd 5: K around

Change to A (cream) for leg.

  • Rnd 6: K1, kfb around – 27 sts (a gentle calf bulge)
  • Rnds 7–12: K 6 rnds even
  • Rnd 13: K7, k2tog three times – 24 sts
  • Rnds 14–16: K 3 rnds even
  • BO loosely, leaving a long tail for sewing later. Lightly stuff each leg, keeping the top 1 cm (½ in) soft and flexible.

Beginner note: If working with DPNs, tug the first stitch after each needle change to avoid “ladders.” Magic loop knitters: keep your working yarn snug at each edge.

2) Join Legs & Knit Body (worked in the round)

Hold legs side by side with boot toes facing the same way. Using A and 3.25 mm needles:

  • Re-load sts: Place the 24 live sts of Leg 1 on your needle.
  • CO 4 sts (for the crotch bridge), then place the 24 live sts of Leg 2 on the needle.
  • Join to work in the round at the start marker. Total = 52 sts.

Body shaping

  • Rnd 1: K around – 52 sts
  • Rnd 2 (Inc): K12, kfb four times, K remaining to end – 56 sts
  • Rnds 3–8: K 6 rnds even (forming the hips & tummy)
  • Rnd 9 (Dec): K6, k2tog seven times – 49 sts
  • Rnd 10: K
  • Rnd 11 (Dec): K5, k2tog seven times – 42 sts
  • Rnd 12: K
  • Rnd 13 (Dec): K4, k2tog seven times – 35 sts
  • Rnd 14: K
  • Rnd 15 (Dec): K3, k2tog seven times – 28 sts

Lightly stuff the lower body now, shaping a soft oval. Do not overfill at the waist; we’ll add more later.

3) Neck & Head (switch to fluffy yarn for head)

Neck

  • Rnd 16 (Dec): K2, k2tog seven times – 21 sts
  • Rnd 17: K
  • Rnd 18 (Dec): K1, k2tog seven times – 14 sts (neck)

Add more stuffing around the neck base to prevent wobble.

Switch to B (faux-fur/boucle) and 3.75–4.0 mm needles. Knit carefully; textured yarn hides stitches, so count by rounds and markers.

Head increases

  • Rnd 19: Kfb around – 28 sts
  • Rnd 20: K1, kfb around – 42 sts
  • Rnds 21–25: K 5 rnds even (plump head)

Place eyes now: If using safety eyes, insert between Rnds 23–24, about 8–9 sts apart, centered over the body. If embroidering, mark the spots with pins.

Head decreases

  • Rnd 26: K5, k2tog six times – 36 sts
  • Rnd 27: K
  • Rnd 28: K4, k2tog six times – 30 sts
  • Rnd 29: K
  • Rnd 30: K3, k2tog six times – 24 sts
  • Rnd 31: K
  • Rnd 32: K2, k2tog six times – 18 sts
  • Rnd 33: K, begin firm stuffing for the head.
  • Rnd 34: K1, k2tog six times – 12 sts
  • Rnd 35: K2tog around – 6 sts

Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining 6 sts, pull tight, and bury the end inside the head.

4) Arms (make 2, worked in the round)

Using A and 3.25 mm needles:

  • CO 8 sts, join in the round.
  • Rnd 1: Kfb around – 16 sts
  • Rnds 2–3: K 2 rnds
  • Rnd 4 (Dec): K2, k2tog four times – 12 sts
  • Rnds 5–12: K 8 rnds even
  • BO all sts, leaving a long tail. Stuff lightly (leave the top 1 cm empty for a soft hinge).

5) Ears (make 2, worked flat)

Using A and 3.25 mm straight needles:

  • CO 6 sts.
  • Row 1 (RS): K
  • Row 2 (WS): P
  • Row 3: Kfb, K4, Kfb – 8 sts
  • Row 4: P
  • Rows 5–8: St st (K RS, P WS)
  • Row 9: K2tog, K4, SSK – 6 sts
  • Row 10: P
  • Row 11: K2tog, K2, SSK – 4 sts
  • Row 12: P
  • Row 13: K2tog twice – 2 sts

Cut yarn, pull tail through 2 sts to close. Fold the lower third and stitch the fold to create a gentle cup.

Overalls (worked bottom-up; in the round to the waist, then split for bib/back)

Make one pair with D (blue or pink) on 3.25 mm needles.

Legs (make 2 then join)

  • CO 18 sts, join in the round.
  • Rnds 1–3: K1, P1 rib – neat cuff.
  • Rnds 4–12: K 9 rnds even.
  • Set aside the first leg. Knit a second leg to match; do not break yarn on the second.

Join & Body of Overalls

  • Knit across Leg 2, CO 4 sts for the inseam bridge, knit across Leg 1. Place marker at center back. Total = 40 sts.
  • Rnds 1–8: K 8 rnds even.
  • Rnd 9 (Waist shaping): K8, k2tog four times – 36 sts
  • Rnd 10: K
  • Rnd 11: K7, k2tog four times – 32 sts

Split for Front/Back (worked flat):

  • Back: Knit 16 sts, place remaining 16 sts on holder for Front.
    1. Rows 1–6: St st for 6 rows.
    2. Row 7 (BO): Bind off 16 sts—Back is complete.
  • Front (Bib): Return the held 16 sts to needle.
    1. Rows 1–4: St st 4 rows.
    2. Rows 5–8: K every row (garter) to make a firm bib edge. BO all 16 sts.

Straps (make 2)

  • CO 3 sts with D.
  • Work a 3-st i-cord for 12–14 rows (or knit a 3-st garter strip if you prefer).
  • BO. Make a second strap.

Optional Flower (for pink overalls)

  • Using green, embroider two tiny leaves at center of bib.
  • Using red, make a small spiral rose (coiled chain stitch or a French-knot cluster).

Overalls are designed to slip on from the feet up. If your stuffing is very firm, add a small button and loop at the top of one strap to open/close easily.

Face & Safety

  • For babies and toddlers, avoid safety eyes. Embroider eyes with black yarn.
  • Place eyes between Rnds 23–24 of the head, 8–9 sts apart.
  • Embroider a small triangle nose with C (black) centered 2 rounds below the eyes, and add a tiny vertical stitch for the mouth.

Assembly & Finishing

  1. Attach Ears: Pin ears on either side of the head, roughly in line with the top third of the face. Sew the cupped base securely using the ear tails.
  2. Attach Arms: Position arms 1–2 rounds below the neck. Sew around the top edges with small stitches, keeping the seam invisible.
  3. Secure Legs (if needed): Because we knit from the legs upward, they’re already attached; check the crotch bridge and reinforce the few stitches if the toy will be well-loved.
  4. Final Stuffing: Adjust stuffing so the lamb is plump but squeezable. Add a little more near the neck if the head wobbles; you can also run a strand of yarn around the inside of the neck like a drawstring and snug gently.
  5. Dress Up: Slide the overalls up over the boots and body. Smooth the bib against the chest and sew straps to the top corners of the bib (cross them at the back for extra hold). If using a buttoned strap, sew button to bib edge and make a small crochet chain loop on the strap.
  6. Fluff the Head: If your faux-fur/boucle needs help, gently brush with a pet slicker or soft toothbrush. Short, light strokes create the cute lamb-wool halo.
  7. Tidy Ends: Weave in all loose tails inside the toy to keep it child-safe and neat.

Stitch Count Quick Reference

  • Each Leg: 8 → 24 → 18 → (inc) 27 → taper to 24; BO.
  • Join for Body: 24 + 4 + 24 = 52 sts → dec to 28 → neck to 14.
  • Head (fluffy): 14 → 28 → 42 → dec to 6 and close.
  • Arms: 8 → 16 → 12 (straight) → BO.
  • Ears: CO 6 → peak at 8 → dec to 2.
  • Overalls: Each leg CO 18; join with +4 = 40 sts → waist 32; Front/Back 16 each; straps i-cord 3 sts × 12–14 rows.

Troubleshooting for Beginners

  • Stuffing shows through: Use a smaller needle or knit a bit tighter. Firm fabric is key for toys.
  • Neck is floppy: Before closing the head, add extra stuffing at the neck base or thread a yarn “drawstring” around the neck stitches inside the body and secure.
  • Ladders at needle joins: Shift the start-of-round by one stitch every few rounds, or use magic loop which naturally reduces ladders.
  • Overalls too snug/loose: Add or subtract 4 stitches evenly at the leg cast-ons and follow the same shaping. Tiny toys are forgiving—try on as you knit!
