Cloud Ballet Sheep – Free Crochet Pattern

Cloud Ballet Sheep is a soft amigurumi lamb with a textured woolly head, a simple cream body, a pastel blue raincoat, a ruffled cream skirt, bright yellow rain boots and a tiny blue umbrella with raindrops. She’s posed indoors in soft natural light, as if quietly waiting out a gentle shower.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight yarn (cotton or cotton blend recommended):
    1. Cream: head, body, arms, legs
    2. Very light cream/ivory: bobble “wool” texture on head (optional if you want two tones)
    3. Pastel blue: raincoat, umbrella canopy
    4. Soft butter yellow: boots
    5. Light brown: umbrella handle, nose embroidery
    6. Tiny amount black or dark brown: mouth details
  • 2.75–3.0 mm crochet hook (or size to get a tight fabric)
  • Safety eyes: 8 mm black (pair)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle and sewing pins
  • Stitch marker
  • Optional: a few small blue beads or yarn for raindrop details on umbrella and coat buttons

Gauge & Finished Size

Gauge is not critical, but stitches should be tight so stuffing does not show. With DK yarn and a 2.75–3.0 mm hook, finished Cloud Ballet Sheep is about 7.5–8 in (19–20 cm) tall including boots, standing on a flat surface.

Construction Overview

  • Head and body are crocheted as one continuous piece from the bottom up.
  • Legs, arms, and ears are made separately and sewn on.
  • The skirt is crocheted directly as a separate piece and slipped over the body.
  • The raincoat is worked flat from the bottom up and seamed slightly under the arms, leaving an open front.
  • Boots and umbrella are separate accessories.
  • Facial features and small embroidered details are added last.

Start at the top of the leg so you can later attach boots neatly.

Use cream yarn.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (sc, inc) x3 (9)

Rnd 2: inc around (10)
Rnd 3–4: sc around (10)

Stuff lightly, FO leaving a tail for sewing to lower back of body.

Clothing Pieces

Ruffled Skirt

The skirt peeks out from under the raincoat and is cream, with soft ruffles.

Use cream or slightly lighter cream yarn.

Waistband

Row 1: ch 36, join with sl st to first ch (forming a ring) (36)
Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in each ch around, join (36)

Skirt Body

Rnd 3: ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in each st around, join (36)
Rnd 4: ch 2, hdc in next st, inc hdc in next st around (54)
Rnd 5: ch 2, hdc in each st around, join (54)

Ruffle Edge

Rnd 6: ch 1, sc in next st, 3 dc in next st repeat around to create a wavy ruffle. (It does not need to be an exact repeat count; just keep the ruffle even.)

FO and weave in ends. The waistband should sit snugly at the sheep’s waist, below the raincoat.

Raincoat

Pastel blue, slightly A-line coat, open at the front.

Use pastel blue yarn. Work flat in rows.

Back & Fronts in one piece

Row 1: ch 40 (this is the bottom edge).
Row 2: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across (39), turn.
Row 3–6: ch 1, sc across (39), turn.

We now shape the armholes and separate fronts and back.

Row 7 (right front):
ch 1, sc in first 8 sts, turn, leave remaining sts unworked for now. (8)

Row 8–10: ch 1, sc 8, turn.
FO, leave tail for later.

Back panel:

Reattach yarn to 2nd armhole section (skip 4 sts for armhole, then join to next st).

Row 7 (back): ch 1, sc in next 19 sts, turn. (19)
Row 8–10: ch 1, sc 19, turn.
FO.

Left front:

Reattach yarn leaving 4 armhole sts free and working into last 8 sts of Row 6.

Row 7 (left front): ch 1, sc 8, turn.
Row 8–10: ch 1, sc 8, turn.

Do not FO after Row 10; we will now join shoulders.

With the wrong side facing, sew or slip stitch the top of each front shoulder to the corresponding top of the back panel (about 3 sts each side), leaving a neck opening in the middle of the back panel.

Neck & Front Edging

Attach yarn at bottom right front edge.

Row 1: ch 1, sc up the right front edge, across back neckline, and down the left front edge, working 1 sc per row edge and approximately 1 sc in each neck stitch.
FO and weave in ends.

Sew tiny blue beads or embroider three small dots down the right front as “buttons”.

coat Sleeves (make 2)

Work in rounds directly into the armhole spaces.

Attach pastel blue yarn at underarm.

Rnd 1: work 14 sc evenly around the armhole edge (include stitches from front and back) (14)
Rnd 2–5: sc around (14)
Rnd 6: (5 sc, dec) x2 (12)
Rnd 7–8: sc around (12)

FO and weave in ends. Repeat for the second sleeve. Sleeves should end just before the sheep’s “wrist” so the little cream hands peek out.

Yellow Rain Boots (make 2)

Use butter yellow yarn.

Sole

Rnd 1: ch 7; starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch; continue along other side of chain, sc 4, 2 sc in last ch (14)
Rnd 2: sc 5, inc in next 3 sts, sc 5, inc in last st (18)
Rnd 3: sc 6, inc in next 3 sts, sc 6, inc in last 2 sts (24)

Sides

Rnd 4: BLO, sc around (24)
Rnd 5–6: sc around (24)

Ankle shaping

Rnd 7: sc 7, (dec, sc) x4, sc remaining (20)
Rnd 8: sc 7, dec x3, sc remaining (17)
Rnd 9–10: sc around (17)

FO, leaving a tail. Stuff the little cream leg partway into the boot and then lightly stuff the boot foot. You can sew the leg to the inside of the boot so it stays in place.

Repeat for the second boot.

Umbrella

Use pastel blue for canopy and brown for handle.

Canopy

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)

Scalloped edge

Rnd 6: skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sl st in next repeat around. Adjust at the end if needed so the scallops line up nicely.

FO and weave in ends.

With a tiny bit of blue yarn, embroider or attach very small raindrop shapes near the edge of several panels.

Umbrella handle

With brown, ch 20.
Row back: sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch back down (19 sl sts).

FO leaving a long tail. Thread the straight part of the handle up through the center of the canopy from the inside; secure with several stitches. Curl the bottom 3–4 chains into a hook shape and stitch in place so it stays curved.

To show little hanging raindrops:

  • Cut 3 short strands of blue yarn.
  • Knot one end, thread through from the canopy’s underside and let them dangle.
  • Optionally add tiny blue beads at the ends as drops.

Assembly

Attach Legs:

  • Pin the two legs to the bottom of the body so the sheep stands balanced.
  • Sew firmly with the cream tails, making several passes.

Add Tail:

  • Sew the small tail to the lower back, centered.

Dress with Skirt:

  • Slide the cream ruffled skirt up over the boots and legs.
  • Position the waistband at the narrowest part of the waist; secure with a few hidden stitches if it feels loose.

Attach Arms:

  • Pin the arms to the sides of the body, just below the head, slightly angled forward.
  • Sew around the top edges, keeping the joins neat under the coat sleeves.

Attach Ears:

  • Pin ears symmetrically on either side of the head, just above eye level.
  • Sew along the base of each ear, allowing them to droop slightly.

Put on Raincoat:

  • Gently slide the coat onto the body from the top, guiding arms into the sleeves.
  • Pull the coat down so the hem rests just above the skirt ruffle.
  • The front remains open like in the photo; you can add a snap at the neck or simply stitch the top 1–2 “buttons” closed.

Face Details:

  • With brown yarn, embroider a small oval nose centered between the eyes, a few rounds down.
  • Add a simple curved mouth and optional tiny eyebrows or cheek lines, matching the soft expression in the image.

Attach Boots:

  • Make sure the boots sit flat; sew around the inner edge of each boot where the leg inserts, to keep them secure.

Pose with Umbrella:

  • Place the umbrella handle in one hand, sewing the hand closed around it or wrapping a few stitches around the handle so it looks like the sheep is really gripping it.
  • Angle the umbrella slightly over the head, as if she’s holding it to keep off the drizzle.

Finishing & Styling

Straighten the coat collar, smooth the skirt ruffle and adjust the ears until you get the gentle, dreamy look seen in the photo. Place Cloud Ballet Sheep on a wooden table or shelf near a window for soft natural light, with the umbrella tilted overhead and boots lightly touching the surface.

Your Cloud Ballet Sheep is now ready to dance through rainy days and star in cozy photos, handmade exactly to match the sweet pastel scene.
