Materials

  • Yarn (sport/DK cotton or cotton blend):
    1. Light cream for head, body, arms, legs, tail
    2. Mint green for sweater and watering can
    3. Soft yellow for bucket hat
    4. Pale pink for Mary Jane shoes and inner ears
    5. Beige/cream for pinafore dress
    6. Light brown for bag strap and postcard details
    7. Small amounts of green and pink for embroidered flowers on pinafore
    8. Optional extra pastel shades for postcard “stamps” and tiny flowers
  • Hook: 2.5–3.0 mm (use a size that gives you a tight fabric)
  • Safety eyes: 8 mm black round eyes
  • Stuffing: Fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle: For sewing and embroidery
  • Stitch markers, pins, scissors
  • Optional: small snap, tiny button or a few stitches to close sweater back if desired

Gauge is not critical, but work tightly so stuffing does not show.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Approximate gauge: ~8 sc = 1 inch (2.5 cm) in spiral rounds.
  • Finished bunny height: about 8 in / 20 cm tall, including hat, when made with sport/DK yarn and a 2.75–3.0 mm hook.

Construction Overview

  • Head and body are worked in one piece from the bottom up.
  • Legs, arms, ears and tail are crocheted separately and sewn on.
  • Sweater, pinafore dress, hat, shoes, bag, postcards, watering can and flowers are made separately and dressed on or placed as props.
  • All pieces are worked in a tight spiral unless otherwise noted.

Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round and move it up as you go.

Notes

  • Stuff firmly but not so hard that the fabric stretches.
  • When you see “x2” or “make 2”, work that piece twice.
  • You can change hook size or yarn weight, but proportions may shift slightly.

Rnd 1: MR 6 (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3–4: sc around (12)
Stuff lightly, FO leaving a tail for sewing to the lower back.

Clothing & Accessories

Mint Sweater

The sweater is worked in rounds from the bottom up with simple armholes. It will be slightly boxy and can be slipped on from the top; the back is left slightly open and can be closed with a few stitches or a tiny snap.

Use mint yarn.

Body of Sweater

Rnd 1: ch 44, join with sl st to first ch without twisting (44)
Rnd 2–5: ch 1, sc around, join with sl st (44)

Rnd 6 (armhole round):
ch 1, sc in next 5 sts,
ch 4, skip 4 sts (first armhole),
sc in next 11 sts,
ch 4, skip 4 sts (second armhole),
sc in remaining 20 sts, join (44 total stitches including ch spaces)

Rnd 7–9: ch 1, sc in each st and each ch across, join (44)

Rnd 10 (neck shaping):
ch 1, sc 2, dec around (approx 33–34 sts, it’s okay if you end with an extra sc). Adjust so it sits neatly on the neck.

Rnd 11: ch 1, sc around, join.
FO and weave in tail, leaving the back uncut if you like to open a small slit. You can later close the back with a few stitches once the sweater is on the bunny.

Sleeves (make 2)

Attach mint yarn to the center of one armhole.

Rnd 1: work 12 sc evenly around the armhole opening (including into ch spaces) (12)
Rnd 2–5: sc around (12)
Rnd 6: (4 sc, dec) x2 (10)
Rnd 7–8: sc around (10)
FO and weave in ends. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Put the sweater on the bunny after attaching legs but before sewing the arms in place (so the sleeves can cover the arm joints nicely).

Flower Pinafore Dress

Use beige/cream for the main color.

Skirt

Rnd 1: ch 54, join to first ch (54)
Rnd 2: ch 1, sc around (54)
Rnd 3: ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in each st around, join (54)
Rnd 4: ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, inc hdc in next st around (72)
Rnd 5–7: ch 2, hdc around, join (72)

This creates a gently flared skirt that hits just above the shoes.

Bodice

Switch to sc.

Rnd 8: FLO, sc in next 18 sts, turn – we now work back and forth only over 18 sts for the front bodice.

Row 1 (front panel): ch 1, sc 18, turn
Row 2–5: ch 1, sc across (18)

FO, leaving a long tail to sew the sides of the bodice to the back of the skirt waistband.

Back band & straps

Re-attach yarn at the back of the skirt, centered opposite the front panel. Work a short back band:

Row 1: ch 1, sc in 10 sts across back waist, turn (10)
Row 2–3: ch 1, sc across (10)
FO.

For each strap (make 2):

Attach yarn to the top corner of the front bodice.
Row 1: ch 18, FO.

Cross the strap over the bunny’s shoulder, position it to the back band and sew it down. Repeat for the other side and adjust length if needed (add or remove chains so the dress sits neatly under the arms and over the sweater).

With green and pink yarn, embroider small tulip-like flowers scattered across the front of the skirt:

  • Make one vertical green stitch (stem) and two tiny pink horizontal stitches on top (petals).

Yellow Bucket Hat

Use soft yellow yarn.

Rnd 1: MR 6 (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)

This flat circle should match the top of the bunny’s head.

Rnd 7–9: sc around (36) – this forms the straight sides of the bucket hat.

Rnd 10 (brim): FLO, (5 sc, inc) x6 (42)
Rnd 11: sc around (42)

FO and weave in ends. Try the hat on; the brim should sit just above the eyes with the ears coming out on either side (you can tilt it slightly forward like in the photo).

Pink Mary Jane Shoes (make 2)

Use pale pink yarn.

Sole

Rnd 1: ch 7, starting in 2nd ch from hook: 4 sc, 3 sc in last ch; continue on the other side of the chain: 4 sc, 1 sc in last ch with first st (11)
Rnd 2: sc 4, inc x3, sc 4, inc (15)
Rnd 3: sc 5, inc x3, sc 5, inc (19)

Sides

Rnd 4: BLO, sc around (19)
Rnd 5–6: sc around (19)

Toe shaping

Rnd 7: sc 6, (dec, sc) x3, sc remaining (16)
Rnd 8: sc 5, dec x3, sc remaining (13)

Mary Jane strap & ankle

Rnd 9: sc around (13), sl st to join, FO leaving a small tail.
Attach yarn at center back of shoe, ch 8, sk 3 sts at front, sl st to the opposite side to form the strap. FO.
Stuff the shoe lightly and slide the leg inside. Sew the shoe lightly to the leg if you want them fixed in place.

Repeat for the second shoe.

Crossbody Postcard Bag

Use cream for the main part, brown for the edging and strap.

Bag body (worked as a flat rectangle)

Row 1: with cream, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (8), turn
Row 2–6: ch 1, sc 8, turn

This gives a small rectangle.

Fold the rectangle in half to form a pocket (4 rows front, 4 rows back including foundation). Sc around the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. FO cream.

With brown yarn, sl st around the flap edge and front edge to give a postcard border. Embroider a small red heart in the lower right corner and a few brown “address lines”.

Strap

With brown: ch 55–60 (depending on how long you want the crossbody strap). FO.
Sew each end of the chain to the top corners of the bag so it sits diagonally across the bunny’s body.

Flat Postcards (3–4 pieces)

Use cream yarn.

Row 1: ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6), turn
Row 2–3: ch 1, sc 6, turn

FO cream. With brown, lightly sl st around the edge for a border. Embroider tiny “stamps”, lines or mini flowers in pastel shades on each one so every postcard looks different.

Mini Watering Can

Use mint yarn.

Can Body

Rnd 1: MR 6 (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4–6: sc around (18)

FO and weave in top for now; the can is a simple cylinder.

Top Rim

Attach yarn to any stitch at the top edge.
Rnd 1: FLO, sc around (18), sl st to join, FO. This creates a slight rim.

Handle

Ch 12, FO. Sew ends of the chain vertically to the side of the can to form a curved handle.

Spout

Rnd 1: MR 4 (4)
Rnd 2: sc around (4)
FO leaving a tail. Slightly flatten and sew to the side of the can opposite the handle, angling upward. Optionally add a tiny circle on the tip (MR 5 sc) for the sprinkler head.

Stuff the can very lightly so it holds its shape without bulging.

Tiny Flowers

For extra props, make a few small flowers.

Flower

With pink: MR, (ch 2, sl st in ring) x5 for 5 little petals. FO and pull ring closed.

Stem & Leaf

With green: ch 6, sl st back along the chain. Optionally add a small leaf by working (ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch) halfway down the stem. FO and sew a flower to the top of the stem.

You can scatter a few flowers around the bunny and place some near the watering can and postcards.

Assembly & Finishing

Attach Legs:

  • Position the legs on the underside of the body, slightly forward so the bunny stands balanced.
  • Sew them on firmly using the long tails.

Dress the Bunny (base layer):

  • Slide the mint sweater onto the body from the top.
  • Adjust so the hem sits just below the waist.
  • If you want, stitch the back slit partially closed.

Attach Arms:

  • Pin each arm to the sides of the body, right under the sweater’s shoulder line.
  • Sew through both the arm top and the body, ensuring they sit symmetrically.

Attach Tail:

  • Sew the tail to the lower back of the body, centered.

Attach Ears:

  • Pin ears on top of the head, slightly forward and angled outwards.
  • Sew securely, then gently bend them to get the soft curve seen in the photo.

Dress in Pinafore:

  • Pull the skirt up over the legs and hips.
  • Position the front bodice centered under the bunny’s chin.
  • Sew the side edges of the bodice to the back waist band.
  • Cross the straps at the back and sew them down to the band.

Add Shoes & Hat:

  • Slip each leg into a pink Mary Jane shoe and stitch in place if you like.
  • Put the yellow bucket hat on, adjusting so it frames the face and ears.

Bag & Props:

  • Place the postcard crossbody bag over one shoulder, resting on the opposite hip.
  • Scatter the flat postcards, watering can and tiny flowers around the bunny for your final display.

Final Touches

Straighten the dress, smooth the sweater cuffs over the arms, and adjust the hat and bag strap until everything looks balanced. Add a soft pastel background (wooden table, a small vase of flowers, natural light) and you’ll have your own Garden Postcard Bunny ready for photos, gifting or display.

Happy crocheting!
