Christmas Eve Post Bunny – Free Knitting Pattern

Christmas Eve Post Bunny is a soft knitted toy bunny dressed as a tiny Christmas mail carrier. She wears a red and green Fair Isle sweater, a cream skirt with envelope motifs, brown Mary Jane shoes, a deep green beret, and a crossbody mailbag holding little letters and a red postal flag.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials

  • Fingering or 4-ply wool or wool-blend yarn (tight gauge for toys):
    1. A: Light beige (bunny)
    2. B: Medium brown (shoes & mailbag)
    3. C: Classic red (sweater, stripe, flag, envelopes)
    4. D: Warm cream (skirt, main letters)
    5. E: Deep forest green (hat & sweater stripe)
    6. Small scraps: pale green and soft yellow for extra letter details
  • Set of US 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles or circular for magic loop
  • Tapestry needle
  • Waste yarn and stitch markers
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • 2 safety eyes, 6–8 mm
  • A little black embroidery thread for nose and mouth
  • Optional: pipe cleaner / floral wire for ears (if you like them poseable – not for small children)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • CO – cast on
  • BO – bind off
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • kfb – knit front and back (increase 1)
  • m1 – make one (lifted or bar increase)
  • k2tog – knit 2 together (right-leaning decrease)
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit (left-leaning decrease)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • RS / WS – right side / wrong side
  • pm / sm – place marker / slip marker

All pieces are worked at a firm gauge so the stuffing does not show through.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Approx. 28 sts x 36 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette in the round on US 2 needles.
  • Finished bunny stands about 9–10 in (23–25 cm) tall when lightly stuffed and blocked.

If your gauge is looser, consider going down a needle size.

Construction Overview

  • Bunny: Legs, body, and head are worked in one piece from the feet upward in the round. Arms and ears are worked separately and sewn on.
  • Shoes are part of the legs.
  • Clothing (sweater, skirt, beret) is removable.
  • Mailbag, letters, and tiny flag are separate knitted accessories.

Stuff firmly but not rock-hard so the toy stays soft while standing with support.

Bunny

Legs (make 2)

With B (brown) and US 2 needles, CO 6 sts. Distribute for working in the round, join carefully, and place a marker for the beginning of round.

Foot shaping
Rnd 1: kfb around – 12 sts
Rnd 2: k around
Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around – 18 sts
Rnd 4–7: k around

Rnd 9: (k2, kfb) around – 16 sts
Rnd 10–22: k around (about 3.5 cm / 1⅜ in for the leg tube)

Cut yarn, leaving sts on holder or waste yarn after the second leg. Do not stuff yet.

Make a second leg in the same way, but do not cut yarn at the end – this leg will be your working leg for joining.

Body

Hold both legs side by side, toes facing the same direction.

With working yarn A still attached to second leg:

Rnd 1 (join legs):
Knit across 16 sts of second leg, CO 4 sts with backward loop, knit across 16 sts of first leg from holder, CO 4 sts with backward loop, place marker for new beginning of round. – 40 sts total.

Gently stuff feet and lower legs before the tube narrows.

Rnd 2–12: k around (straight body tube)

Waist and chest shaping

Rnd 13: (k8, k2tog) around – 36 sts
Rnd 14–16: k around
Rnd 17: (k4, k2tog) around – 30 sts
Rnd 18–20: k around
Rnd 21: (k3, k2tog) around – 24 sts

Rnd 40: (k2tog) around – 8 sts

Add more stuffing; shape the nose slightly by pushing a bit more fiber into the front.

Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight to close and secure.

Embroider a small triangular nose with black thread centered between the eyes, just below them, and a tiny “Y” mouth line.

Front neck:
Row 9 (RS): k12, BO 8, k12.
Row 10 (WS): p12, CO 8 over gap with backward loops, p12 – 32 sts again.

Rows 11–12: st st straight, then BO all front sts.

Rejoin yarn at remaining 32 sts for back, work same number of straight rows (8), then BO all sts straight across for a simple crew back.

Sew shoulder seams (2–3 sts each side) leaving a soft neck opening. The sweater should be cropped, ending just above the bunny’s skirt waistband.

Sleeves (make 2)

Accessories

Mary Jane Shoe Details

The brown feet are already knitted as part of the legs. To mimic Mary Jane straps:

With B (brown) and a tapestry needle, work a short line of horizontal duplicate stitches across the top of each foot, then a tiny vertical stitch at the outside edge to suggest a button.

Crossbody Mailbag

With B (brown), work flat.

Bag body
CO 10 sts.
Rows 1–16: knit every row (garter stitch).
Fold piece so row 16 becomes the flap edge. Sew sides of rows 1–12 together, leaving flap (rows 13–16) free.

Flap shaping
Row 17 (RS): k2, k2tog, k2, ssk, k2 – 8 sts
Row 18: knit
Row 19: k1, k2tog, k2, ssk, k1 – 6 sts
Row 20: knit

BO all sts. Weave in ends.

Strap
With B, CO 3 sts and work i-cord for about 9–10 in (23–25 cm), or to fit cross-body on your bunny. BO, sew ends to sides of bag opening.

Place mailbag diagonally across the bunny’s chest; tack in place at the shoulder if desired so it doesn’t slide.

Tiny Letters (make several)

For cream main letters:

With D (cream), CO 6 sts.
Rows 1–4: knit.
BO. Lightly block to a small rectangle.

Embroider a red “V” envelope outline and a central line across to form the flap with C (red). Add a small green square stamp in the top right corner using E (green).

For red and green letters, repeat with C or E as base and switch contrast colors for the flap and stamp. Make 3–5 letters: one can be tucked inside the bag, a couple placed at the bunny’s feet for photos.

Red Flag

With C (red), CO 4 sts.
Rows 1–6: knit.
BO and weave in yarn tails into the back.

Cut a short length of brown yarn and twist tightly or braid to create a stiff “pole,” or use a wooden cocktail stick wrapped with brown yarn (not for children). Sew or glue the red rectangle to the top of the pole.

Stitch the pole into the bunny’s paw so the flag stands upright as in the picture.

Finishing & Assembly

  1. Attach ears: Pin ears to the top of the head, slightly angled outward, with the fronts leaning a little forward. Sew securely using A.
  2. Attach arms: Dress the bunny in the sweater first. Sew arms to the sides of the body just under the sweater yoke so the sleeve cap blends into the armhole.
  3. Dress the bunny: Pull on the skirt from the feet up, position waistband at the bunny’s waist. Adjust sweater hem to sit just over the top of the skirt. Add beret on a slight tilt.
  4. Add mailbag and letters: Place the mailbag strap across the body from right shoulder to left hip (or vice versa to match your photo). Tuck one letter into the bag and arrange the others on the ground or table when styling.
  5. Final shaping: Roll the bunny gently between your hands to even out stuffing, pinch the nose slightly to define the shape, and adjust the ears and hat.

Your Christmas Eve Post Bunny is ready to deliver tiny letters to Santa with her cozy sweater, festive skirt, and little mailbag full of secrets.
