Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn with good stitch definition
    1. Bear fur: warm beige
    2. Snout/inner muzzle: lighter beige or cream
    3. Sweater + mug foam: cream
    4. Shorts + hat + mug: dark forest green
    5. Plaid accents on shorts: mustard / golden yellow

    9. Stick: dark brown
  • Crochet hook: 2.5–3.0 mm (or size that gives tight fabric)
  • Safety eyes: 10–12 mm black
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers
  • Optional: blush or soft pink yarn for cheeks

Finished size: approximately 20–22 cm (8–8.5″) tall with hat, using DK yarn and 2.75 mm hook.

Gauge & Notes

Gauge is not critical, but stitches must be tight so stuffing does not show. With your chosen yarn/hook, about 6 sc × 7 rows ≈ 1″ (2.5 cm).
Stuff firmly but smoothly, especially the head and feet for a stable standing bear.

Construction Overview

  • The bear is worked in separate pieces: head, muzzle, ears, body, arms, legs, and tail.
  • Clothes and accessories are removable: sweater, suspender shorts, bucket hat, ankle shoes, backpack, mugs, marshmallow sticks, extra marshmallow, and campfire.
  • Assemble the bear first, then dress him and add all camping props for styling.

Assembling the Bear Base

  1. Sew the head to the body, matching centers; stitch all around securely.
  2. Attach legs to the bottom sides of the body so the bear can stand. Slightly angle toes outward for stability.
  3. Sew arms slightly below the neckline, angled forward to hold accessories.
  4. Add a tiny bit of blush on cheeks if desired.

Now your bear is ready to get dressed.

Cream Sweater

Use cream yarn. Sweater is worked top-down in rows at first, then joined and worked in rounds.

Yoke

Row 1: Ch 32, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (31).
Row 2: ch 1, turn, (3 sc, inc) repeat across (39).
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across (39).

Row 4 (form armholes):

  • sc 6, ch 4, skip 7, sc 13, ch 4, skip 7, sc 6 (39 sts around when joined).

Join with sl st to first st to work in rounds.

Body of Sweater

Rnd 5: sc around (39)
Rnd 6: (12 sc, dec) three times (36)
Rnds 7–10: sc around (36)

Rnd 11: FLO, (sc, ch 1) in each st for a subtle hem texture. Sl st to join, FO and weave end.

Sleeves (make 2)

Rnds 2–5: sc around (14)
Rnd 6: (5 sc, dec) twice (12)
Rnd 7: FLO, (sc, ch 1) around (12)

FO and weave ends.
On the chest, embroider a small orange/brown leaf motif centered, to match the photo.

Plaid Suspender Shorts (Overalls)

Use forest green and mustard. Worked top-down; legs are short.

Waistband & Body

With green:
Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6) – or ch 26 and join for larger waist; here we use a slightly elastic band:

Alternative waist (easier):
Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6).
Rows 2–32: ch 1, turn, BLO sc across (6).
Join short edges with sl sts to form a band. Rotate to work around long edge; aim for 32 sts evenly spaced.

Rnd 1 (around band): sc 32 around, sl st to join (32).
Rnd 2: (3 sc, inc) around (40)
Rnd 3–4: sc around (40)

Now begin “plaid” texture:
Rnd 5: With mustard, sc in next st, with green sc in next 3 sts repeat around (still 40). Carry unused color inside stitches.
Rnd 6: sc around in green only (40)
Rnd 7: repeat Rnd 5 (tiny checks).
Rnd 8: sc around in green (40)

Split for Legs

Count 20 sts for front/back.

Rnd 5: (3 sc, dec) around (16)
Rnd 6: sc around (16)

Suspenders

With green, make 2.

Row 1: Ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (24).
FO, leaving tails.

Sew one end of each strap to the back of shorts, spaced about 6 sts apart. Cross over the back (crisscross) and sew fronts to the waistband at about shoulder position. Add small “button” knots in mustard where the straps attach at the front.

Put shorts on the bear; they should sit at the natural waist.

Brown Ankle Shoes

Make 2, using brown and beige.

Sole

With beige:
Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)

Rnd 6: sc 5, dec 4, sc 5 (14)
Rnd 7: sc around (14)

Rnd 8: (5 sc, dec, 5 sc, dec) (12)

FO, leave tail. Add stuffing just to round the toe slightly if needed, then place over the bear’s feet and sew lightly around the ankle.
With beige, embroider a small “lace” cross on the front of each shoe, matching the photo.

Green Bucket Hat

Use forest green.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) around (30)
Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) around (36)

Rnds 7–10: sc around (36)

Brim:
Rnd 11: (1 sc, inc) around (54)
Rnd 12: (2 sc, inc) around (72)
Rnd 13: sc around (72)

FO and weave in end.

On the front of the hat, embroider three little trees in mustard, light green, and orange to mimic forest patches.

Backpack

Use brown.

Body

Row 1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (8).
Rows 2–10: ch 1, turn, sc across (8).

You have a rectangle. Fold in half to form a pouch (4 sts front/back). Sc around sides and bottom to join, leaving top open (working approx. 18–20 sts). FO.

Flap

Attach yarn at back top edge.
Row 1: ch 1, 6 sc across (6).
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc dec, 2 sc, sc dec (4).
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across (4).
Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc2tog twice (2).
FO. Optionally add a small knot/loop as a closure.

Rnd 3: BLO, sc around (9)
Rnds 4–5: sc around (9)

Rnd 6: FLO, (1 sc, hdc) around for a subtle rim.

FO. With cream yarn, embroider or lightly stuff the inside to look like hot cocoa foam.

Handle: ch 6, sl st back along chain, FO and sew to side of mug.

Marshmallow Stick

Stick:
With dark brown, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (8). FO. This creates a flat but sturdy stick.

Marshmallows (make 3–4, white)
Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (9)
Rnds 3–4: sc around (9)
Rnd 5: (1 sc, dec) around (6)

FO, lightly stuff.
Sew 2 marshmallows stacked near one end of the stick for the one he’s holding, and leave one or two loose for the ground.

Campfire

Logs (make 3–4, brown)
Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc (5)
Rnds 2–6: sc around (5)
FO, stuff lightly and close ends flat.

Sew the logs together in a small triangle or star shape.

Flames

With yellow:
Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc (5)
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) around (8)
Rnd 3: sc around (8)

Change to orange.
Rnd 4: (3 sc, inc) twice (10)
Rnd 5: [ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, skip 1 st on flame, sl st in next st] repeat around to create three or four flickering points.

FO, stuff lightly and sew the flame cluster on top of the logs. Position the campfire near the bear’s feet.

Final Assembly & Styling

  1. Put the cream sweater on the bear first, closing the back by sewing or adding a small snap at the top.
  2. Dress the bear in the green plaid suspender shorts. Adjust straps so they cross neatly in the back and buttons sit in front.
  3. Slide on the brown ankle shoes and secure with a few stitches around the ankles so they don’t twist.
  4. Place the backpack on his back; stitch lightly under the arms if needed.
  5. Put one mug in his free hand or on the ground near the campfire; pose the second mug beside him.
  6. Attach the marshmallow stick to one paw so it angles toward the campfire. Arrange any extra marshmallows on the ground.
  7. Set the campfire in front of the bear and place the green bucket hat slightly low on his forehead for that cozy camping look.

Pattern Recap

  • The base teddy bear is worked in seamless rounds with a big friendly head, short limbs, and firm feet for stability.
  • Clothing is fully removable: textured cream sweater, plaid suspender shorts, shaped ankle shoes, and a detailed forest bucket hat.
  • Accessories like backpack, mugs, marshmallow sticks, and a small campfire complete the scene and make the finished project perfect for storytelling photos and social media posts.

Enjoy making your own Campfire S’mores Bear, and feel free to adjust colors for different camping seasons while keeping the same shapes and proportions.
