City Matcha Barista Cat – Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

Say hello to the City Matcha Barista Cat: an amigurumi kitty styled like a chic café barista. She wears a ribbed cream beanie, a pistachio-green polo with a tiny collar and three pearl-like buttons, an indigo A-line “denim” skirt with leaf embroidery, clean white sneakers, and a crossbody matcha-latte cup bag topped with whipped “foam.”

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Proportion & Form Analysis

  • Finished size: ~9.5–10 in (24–25.5 cm) tall using DK cotton and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Head: Slightly oval sphere; widest across rounds 16–20. Eyes sit low and wide for a childlike expression (8 mm eyes, 8 sts apart, between Rnds 13–14). Nose is a small rose-brown oval centered 2 rnds below eyes. Subtle mouth: a short vertical stitch down, then a tiny curve.
  • Ears: Triangular with softly rounded tips; set high, pushing through the beanie. The beanie sits just above the eyes and hugs the head.
  • Body: Compact pear shape with a gentle taper at the neck and a straight torso for easy clothing fit.
  • Arms: Slender tubes, minimally stuffed, attached slightly forward so the hands fall beside the skirt seams.
  • Legs & feet: Short legs rising from sneaker-style feet; soles clearly defined with a stitched “midsole” line and crocheted laces. Feet are parallel to stand when leaned against a backrest.
  • Outfit proportions:
    1. Polo: Cropped to the natural waist; grid texture; 3 tiny bead-look buttons centered.
    2. Skirt: High-waist A-line, hem sits just below mid-thigh. Faux topstitch at hem. Leaf appliqué near lower right.
    3. Bag: Cylinder cup hanging from left shoulder to right hip; cream “whipped top” dome and short straw; matcha leaf label on cup front.
    4. Beanie: Ribbed, snug fit with folded brim.
    5. Sneakers: Rounded toe, simple lace tie, low collar above the ankle.
  • Stitch density: Tight amigurumi (≈8 sc per 1 in). Clothing slightly looser for drape but still tidy.
  • Join angles: Ears tilt outward slightly; arms angled just forward; legs perpendicular; bag strap crosses chest at ~45°.

Materials

  • DK-weight 100% cotton (or similar):
    1. C1 Beige/cream for body
    2. C2 Cream (slightly lighter) for beanie & sneakers
    3. C3 Pistachio for polo & bag accents
    4. C4 Indigo/navy for skirt
    5. C5 Dark cocoa or black for whiskers/mouth
    6. C6 Rose-brown for nose
    7. C7 White for “foam” and eye highlight
    8. C8 Leaf green (label + embroidery)
  • Hooks: 2.5 mm for amigurumi; 3.0 mm for skirt hem and beanie brim (optional).
  • Safety eyes: 8 mm black (or crochet circles).
  • Stuffing (polyfill).
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors.
  • Optional: tiny white seed beads replaced with micro crochet “buttons” (instructions included). Everything is yarn-only if preferred.

Whiskers & Final Facial Details

With C5, split the cotton yarn to a thinner 2-ply strand. Stitch three short whiskers per side, beginning just outside the nose level and angling slightly downward. Secure inside the head with tiny knots and a dab of thread-end weaving so they lie flat (no wire).

Assembly & Dressing Order

  1. Put on polo first (neckline has slight give).
  2. Slide on the skirt to the natural waist (right above Round 15 of body).
  3. Put on sneakers or simply add the surface details if legs are fixed.
  4. Place beanie, push ears out through the brim and tack at 2–3 spots.
  5. Hang the matcha bag crossbody from left shoulder to right hip.
  6. Straighten whiskers and smooth clothing.

Blocking, Styling & Care

  • Steam block lightly from a distance to set the polo collar and skirt hem.
  • Shape beanie brim by pinching the fold while cooling.
  • Spot-clean only; air dry.
  • For photo stability, lean the cat against a mug or chair back; the sneakers’ flat soles help it stand supported.

Troubleshooting

  • Head wobble: Before sewing, crochet a short “neck plug” (6 sc around for 4–5 rounds) and insert between head and body.
  • Skirt too loose/tight: Adjust waistband chain by ±6 sts, then keep the increase pattern (every 9–10 sts) consistent.
  • Polo pulling at underarm: Add 1 extra chain at each underarm and pick up an extra st in the first sleeve round.
  • Beanie slides: Add one more decrease round on the crown or tack a hidden stitch to the head.

Quick Reference (at a glance)

  • Head: max 42 sts; eyes between R13–14, 8 sts apart; nose 2 rnds below eyes.
  • Body: max 36→24 at waist; close at 6.
  • Arms: 9-st tubes, subtle taper.
  • Legs/Feet: sole 18 sts; leg 12-st tube; close at 8.
  • Beanie: BLO rib 31 high × 30 rows; crown decreases to 6.
  • Polo: ch 56; body after divide ≈ 40 sts in moss stitch; short sleeves picked up 18 sts.
  • Skirt: waistband 54; flare to 72; hem topstitching + leaf appliqué.
