The “Ranunculus” Layered Studio – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to a world of delicate layers and paper-thin petals. The “Ranunculus” Layered Studio is a tribute to one of the most elegant flowers in the garden. Unlike the bold sunflower or the simple daisy, the Ranunculus is known for its hundreds of tightly packed petals and soft, romantic hues. This crochet project captures that sophistication with a vehicle designed in a dreamy Peach and Cream palette.

The exterior features a unique architectural detail: round windows framed by layered, petal-like structures, making the caravan itself look like a blooming flower. Step inside to find a florist’s workspace dedicated to the art of arrangement. Round ceramic vases hold dense bouquets of Orange, Yellow, and Pink Ranunculus, interspersed with wispy Asparagus Fern branches. The workbench is cluttered with the tools of the trade: sheets of tissue paper, a coil of jute rope, and a delicate glass water spray bottle. Outside, a fluffy White Persian cat—resembling a flower puff itself—naps on a cushioned seat, while a vintage bicycle with a basket full of blooms waits for a delivery run.

This project creates a structure with soft curves but requires rigid walls. To ensure the “Petal Windows” hold their shape and the walls do not buckle under the weight of the ceramic vases, we will strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique is mandatory for this pattern to achieve the professional, heirloom-quality finish seen in the image. We will switch between a standard hook for the studio shell and a precision micro-hook for the intricate flower layers and the Persian cat.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Mercerized cotton is best for the flower layers).

Part 1: The Layered Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Studio Floor

Make 2 identical panels using Cream or Light Wood yarn.

  1. Row 1: Ch 28. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (27)
  2. Row 2-42: Sc across. (Rectangle approx 4.5″ x 7″).
  3. Fasten off Panel 1. Keep yarn attached to Panel 2.

Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to the exact size. Sandwich it between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal.

2. The Peach & Cream Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the walls. The defining feature is the color split and the window frames.

Panel A: Exterior (Peach & Cream)

  • Start with Peach.
  • Row 1: Ch 95 (Length to cover Left + Roof + Right). Sc across.
  • Rows 2-15: Sc across (Peach Bottom Section).
  • Change to Heavy Cream.
  • Rows 16-35: Sc across (Cream Top Section).
  • Window Cutouts: On the side walls, create Circular openings (not square). Ch 6, skip 6, join… adjust next rows to create a round hole.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Cream)

  • Use Cream yarn for the entire interior to keep it bright and airy. Match dimensions and circular window gaps of Panel A.

Assembly:

  • Cut plastic canvas strip (with round holes cut out).
  • Sandwich canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.
  • Back Wall: Make a solid sandwich panel (Peach bottom, Cream top) to close the back.

3. The “Petal” Window Frames

This is the signature detail. Use Cream or Peach yarn. Make 2.

  • Base Ring: Ch 20 (ensure it fits your window hole). Join to ring. Sc around.
  • Petal Layer 1: *Sc, Ch 1, 3 Dc in next st, Ch 1, Sc* repeat around. (Small petals).
  • Petal Layer 2: Work behind Layer 1. *Ch 3, sc between petals*. Then work *Sc, 5 Dc, Sc* in the chain spaces.
  • Assembly: Sew these ruffled frames around the exterior of the circular windows.

Part 2: The Ranunculus & Ferns

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.0mm Hook. Ranunculus flowers are tight and dense.

1. The Ranunculus Flower

Make 20+ flowers in Orange, Yellow, and Pink.

  • Method: We create a spiral strip and roll it up to mimic the hundreds of petals.
  • The Strip: Ch 40 (for a medium flower) or Ch 60 (large).

Row 1: Sc in each ch across.

Row 2: *Sc, Hdc, 2 Dc in next st, Hdc, Sc* repeat across. This creates many small scallops.

  • Assembly: Tightly roll the strip into a spiral. Stitch the bottom edge securely so it doesn’t unroll. The result is a dense, multi-layered flower head.
  • Stem: Insert a green floral wire into the base. Wrap with green yarn.

2. Asparagus Fern

  • Stem: Cut a thin wire. Coat with glue and wrap with Light Green yarn.
  • Foliage: Use a fuzzy or mohair green yarn. Ch 10. Sl st back down. Make many tiny, wispy chains and attach them to the main wire stem. It should look airy and feathery.

Use 2.5mm Hook.

  • Vase: White or Pastel Pink. MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. Sc 3 rounds. Dec to 12. Sc 2 rounds (Neck). Inc to 15 (Rim).

Part 3: Florist Accessories

Use Hook Size: 1.0mm – 1.25mm.

1. Glass Water Spray Bottle

  • Bottle: Translucent Blue or Grey. MR 5 sc, Inc to 10. BLO Sc up for 6 rounds. Dec to 5.
  • Nozzle: Black thread. Ch 4. Sew a tiny trigger loop. Glue to top of bottle.

2. Jute Rope Coil

  • Rope: Use actual Jute twine or Brown yarn. Crochet a long chain (Ch 50).

Coil: Roll it up into a neat circle. Glue the end down. Place on the shelf.

3. Tissue Paper

  • Paper: White crochet thread. Ch 10. Sc 10 rows. Make extremely thin squares.

Styling: Crumple them slightly and place them under the rope or in a basket.

Part 4: Exterior & The Persian Cat

1. The Fluffy Persian Cat

Use 1.25mm Hook and Cream/White yarn.

  • Technique: Use Loop Stitch for the entire body to create long fur.
  • Head: MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Loop St 3 rounds. Dec to 6.

Face: Push the loops back to reveal a tiny flat face. Embroider pink nose and green eyes.

  • Body: MR 6 sc, Inc to 18. Loop St 6 rounds. Dec to close.

  • Tire: Black. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 2 rounds.
  • Hubcap: Peach. MR 6 sc.
  • Sew to sides.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Ensure the U-shell is rigid. The 3-layer sandwich is vital. Check that the “Petal Window Frames” are securely sewn and frame the openings perfectly.
  2. Interior Arrangement:
    • Glue shelves (sandwich panels) to the interior walls.
    • Arrange the Ceramic Vases filled with Ranunculus on the shelves and floor.
    • Place the Spray Bottle and Jute Rope on the workbench area.
    • Scatter the Tissue Paper sheets naturally.
  3. Exterior Styling:
    • Place the Cushioned Seat with the Persian Cat near the entrance.
    • Park the Bicycle with its flower basket next to the caravan.
