The “Water Lily” Pond House – Free Crochet Pattern

Dive into a serene, aquatic world with the “Water Lily” Pond House. This breathtaking crochet project reimagines the classic caravan as a floating sanctuary. The exterior features a stunning ombre gradient, shifting from deep ocean blue at the base to a soft, airy aqua at the roof, accented with playful wavy trim that mimics rippling water. The interior is a maximalist pond simulation: the floor is a textured wave pattern scattered with vibrant 3D water lilies and flat green pads. Delicate dragonflies hang suspended in mid-air, while reeds grow tall in the corner. Outside, a mother duck guides her ducklings over a charming wooden bridge. This is peace, crocheted.

This is an advanced construction project that focuses on gradient color changes and micro-crochet details. To ensure the caravan walls stand perfectly straight and the roof maintains its curve without sagging, we strictly use the “3-Layer Sandwich Method” (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). We will use a standard hook for the shell and a precision micro-hook for the delicate flora and fauna.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Part 1: The Ombre Structure (Sandwich Method)

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm

1. The Rippled Water Floor

Make 2 identical panels. Use Dark Turquoise.

  1. Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (25)
  2. Row 2-40: We want a water texture here. *Sc, Hdc, Dc, Hdc, Sc* repeat across to create a subtle wave. Work this texture for the entire length (approx 6.5 inches).
  3. Assembly: Cut plastic canvas to size. Sandwich between the two panels. Sc around the perimeter through both layers to seal. The floor must be very rigid.

2. The Gradient Shell (U-Shaped)

This forms the walls and roof. We will change colors to create the ombre effect.

Panel A: Exterior (The Gradient)

  • Start with Dark Turquoise.
  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Length to cover Left Wall + Roof + Right Wall). Sc across. (90)
  • Row 2-10: Sc across. (Dark Base).
  • Change to Teal.
  • Row 11-20: Sc across. (Mid-section).
  • Change to Pale Aqua.
  • Row 21-35: Sc across. (Top and Roof).
  • Window Cutouts: In the Pale Aqua section on the side walls, Ch 10, Sk 10 to create windows.
  • Fasten off.

Panel B: Interior (Water Wall)

  • You can use a solid Pale Aqua for the interior to keep it bright, or mirror the gradient. Repeat dimensions and window holes of Panel A.

Assembly & Wavy Trim:

  • Sandwich: Cut plastic canvas (with window holes). Place between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Sc around the perimeter through both layers. Sc inside the window frames.
  • The Wavy Base Trim: With Pale Aqua or a contrasting Light Green, surface crochet a “wave” line (*Sc, Ch 3, Sk 1, Sc*) along the bottom edge of the exterior wall to look like splashing water.
  • Shape: Bend into a U-shape arch. Sew the bottom edges to the Floor Base.

Part 2: The Pond Interior (Maximalism)

IMPORTANT: Switch to 1.5mm Hook and thin yarn. The details must be delicate.

1. Lily Pads (Flat)

Make 6-8 pads in various shades of Green.

  • Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  • Rnd 3: (Sc 1, Inc) around (18).
  • Rnd 4: (Sc 2, Inc) around (24).
  • The Notch: Ch 1, turn. Sc 10, turn. Sc 8. Fasten off. This creates the “Pac-Man” mouth shape.
  • Glue these flat onto the wavy blue floor.

2. 3D Water Lilies

Make 3-4 in Pink and White.

  • Base: Yellow. MR 5 sc.
  • Inner Petals: *Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, sc, hdc, sl st to base* repeat 5 times.
  • Outer Petals (Change to Pink/White): Work behind the inner petals. *Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sc, hdc, dc, sl st to base* repeat 5 times.
  • Glue these on top of the Lily Pads.

3. Corner Reeds (Cattails)

  • Stalks: Cut 3 pieces of thin wire (2 inches long). Wrap tightly with Green yarn.
  • Cattail Head: Brown yarn. Ch 4, join. Sc 3 rows. Slide onto the top of the wire stalk.
  • Leaves: Green yarn. Ch 15. Sc back down. Make 3-4 long leaves.
  • Assembly: Twist the bottom of the wires together. Glue into the back corner of the caravan.

4. The Goldfish Jar

  • The Jar: Use a clear plastic cap (like from a lip balm or travel bottle).
  • The Fish: Orange thread (1.0mm hook if possible). Ch 3. In 1st ch work: (Dc, ch 1, sl st). This is a tiny speck of a fish. Glue inside the cap.
  • Lid/Rim: Crochet a tiny ring of grey thread and glue to the top of the plastic cap.
  • Place the jar on a small “stone” table (a grey crochet cube).

Part 3: Suspended Details

Dragonflies

Use 1.5mm hook and Embroidery Floss.

  • Body: Blue/Teal thread. Ch 6, sl st back down (Tail). MR at top for head.
  • Wings: White/Silver thread. *Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch* (make 2 loops on left side). Repeat for right side.
  • Hanging: Tie a piece of clear fishing line to the dragonfly. Sew the other end to the ceiling of the caravan. Make 2-3 so they hover over the pond floor.

Part 4: The Exterior Garden

1. The Duck Family

Use 1.5mm Hook.

Mother Duck:

  • Head: Brown/Green. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12. Sc 3 rounds. Dec to 6.
  • Beak: Orange. Ch 2, sc. Sew to face.
  • Body: Brown/Beige. MR 6 sc, Inc to 12, (1, Inc) to 18. Sc 5 rounds.

Tail: At the back, Ch 3, Sc back to create a point. Dec to close body.

  • Wings: Ch 6, sc back. Sew to sides.

Ducklings (Make 3):

  • Yellow Yarn. MR 4 sc, Inc to 8. Sc 2 rounds. Dec to 4. Close. Pinch one end to make a beak shape (add tiny orange stitch).

2. The Wooden Bridge

Use Hook Size: 2.5mm and Brown Yarn.

  • Planks (The Walkway): Ch 15. Sc across. Work 6 rows.
  • Arching: Insert a piece of craft wire along the long edges or stitch a wire frame underneath. Bend the rectangle into an arch.
  • Railings: Ch 15 (Top rail). Ch 4 (Posts – make 4). Sew posts to the walkway corners, then sew the top rail to the posts.

3. The Yarn Puddle

  • Water: Blue/Aqua. Crochet a freeform flat shape. MR 6, Inc randomly until you have an oval/kidney shape approx 4 inches wide. Surface slip stitch waves on top.
  • Place the Bridge over this puddle.

Final Assembly

  1. Structural Check: Verify the ombre shell is firmly attached to the floor. The plastic canvas core ensures the “U” shape doesn’t collapse.
  2. Interior Landscaping:
    • Glue the Lily Pads and Lilies to the floor.
    • Secure the Reeds in the corner (use a dab of hot glue at the base).
    • Place the Goldfish Jar on its stand.
    • Ensure the Dragonflies are hanging freely and not tangling.
  3. Exterior Scene:
    • Lay the Blue Puddle mat in front of the caravan.
    • Place the Curved Bridge over the puddle.
    • Position Mother Duck leading her Ducklings across the bridge or waddling towards the caravan door.
