The Hot Cocoa Caravan – Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to the ultimate winter project! This “Hot Cocoa Station” Caravan is designed to bring a cozy, magical atmosphere to your home decor. The design features a vintage-style trailer with a rich chocolate brown base and creamy upper walls, topped with a heavy, dripping layer of snow that looks just like whipped cream. The interior embraces a “maximalist” style, packed with tiny shelves, jars of marshmallows, cocoa powder, and cinnamon sticks, along with steaming mugs ready to serve. Outside, a friendly polar bear in a striped scarf warms his paws by a bright campfire.

This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters who enjoy construction. To ensure the caravan looks beautiful from every angle (even inside!), we use a special 3-Layer Sandwich Method (Yarn – Plastic Canvas – Yarn). This technique completely hides the plastic structure, giving you a professional finish inside and out.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn: DK or Sport weight cotton yarn (keeps the shape better than acrylic).- Chocolate Brown: Lower walls, floor, furniture, logs.

    Cream/Off-White: Upper walls.

Bright White: Roof snow, polar bear, mug topping.

Scrap Colors: Pink (marshmallows), Red/Orange (fire), Black (tires), Grey (hubcaps/lids).

  • Hook: 2.0mm or 2.25mm (Use a smaller hook than recommended to prevent stuffing from showing).
  • Structural Material: 3-4 sheets of Plastic Canvas (7-mesh). This is essential for the “Sandwich” rigidity.
  • Other: Fiberfill stuffing, tapestry needle, stitch markers, hot glue gun (for securing tiny jars), safety eyes (6mm for bear).

Part 1: The Caravan Structure (3-Layer Sandwich Method)

To create a sturdy caravan where the plastic mesh is invisible, we will crochet two identical panels for each section (one Outer, one Inner) and sandwich the mesh in between.

1. The Floor Base

Make 2 identical panels using Chocolate Brown.

  1. Row 1: Ch 21. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (20)
  2. Row 2-35: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (20)
  3. Note: Adjust the number of rows to get a rectangle approx 4 inches x 6 inches.
  4. Fasten off the first piece. Do not fasten off the second piece.

Assembly:

  • Cut a rectangle of plastic canvas slightly smaller (1-2mm) than the crochet piece. Trim the sharp corners of the plastic.
  • Place the canvas between the two crochet panels.
  • Using the working yarn from the second panel, Sc through both layers around the entire perimeter. Place 3 Sc in each corner to keep it square. Fasten off.

2. The U-Shaped Walls (Back & Sides)

We will make one long strip that bends to form the Left Wall, Back Wall, and Right Wall. The front side remains open for the display.

Panel A (Exterior Shell):

  • Start with Chocolate Brown.
  • Row 1: Ch 91 (Long enough to wrap around 3 sides of your floor). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (90)
  • Row 2-12: Sc across. (90)
  • Change to Cream Yarn.
  • Row 13-30: Sc across. (90)
  • Fasten off.

Panel B (Interior Lining):

  • Repeat the exact same instructions as Panel A. You may use Cream for the entire piece if you want a brighter interior, or match the exterior colors.

Assembly:

  • Cut a long strip of plastic canvas to match the crochet dimensions.
  • Sandwich the canvas between Panel A and Panel B.
  • Join: Using Cream yarn for the top section and Brown for the bottom, Sc around the entire perimeter through both layers.
  • Shaping: Bend the strip into a “U” shape. The center section forms the Back Wall, and the two ends form the Side Walls.
  • Attach to Floor: Sew the bottom edge of the U-shaped wall to the three sides of the Floor Base. Ensure the corners are tight (90 degrees).

Part 2: The Snow-Dripped Roof

The roof must be stiff to hold its curve. We use the sandwich method here as well.

Roof Panels

Make 2 identical panels using Bright White.

  1. Row 1: Ch 26 (Must be wider than the caravan width for overhang).
  2. Row 2-50: Sc across. (Length must be enough to curve from the front edge to the back edge).
  3. Fasten off the first piece. Keep yarn attached to the second.

Assembly & “Whipped Cream” Border

  1. Cut plastic canvas to size and sandwich between the two white panels.
  2. Sc through both layers along the Left and Right sides to seal them.
  3. The Dripping Edge (Front & Back): This detail is crucial for the “Hot Cocoa” look. Work along the front edge through both layers:Pattern: *Sc, Hdc, Dc, [Tr, Ch 4, Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, Tr] in same st, Dc, Hdc*.

Repeat this wave pattern across the front. Vary the height of the stitches or the length of the chains to make the drips look organic and melting.

  4. Final Assembly: Place the roof on top of the walls. Secure it with hot glue or sew the edges to the top of the wall panels.

Part 3: Maximalist Interior Details

1. Shelves

Make 2 using Brown yarn.

  • Ch 18. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Work 2 rows. Fasten off.
  • Glue these to the back wall inside the caravan.

2. Ingredient Jars

Glass Jar Body:

  • Use clear or very pale grey yarn.
  • Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  • Rnd 3 (BLO): Sc around (12).
  • Rnd 4-6: Sc around.
  • Stuffing: Use colored yarn scraps inside to simulate contents (Pink for marshmallows, Brown for cocoa).

Lid:

  • Use Grey yarn. MR 6 sc, Inc around (12). Fasten off and glue on top.

3. Steaming Cocoa Mugs

Make 3-4 using Beige/Brown yarn.

  • Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  • Rnd 3 (BLO): Sc around (12).
  • Rnd 4-6: Sc around.
  • Handle: Ch 4, sk 2 sts, sl st. Fasten off.
  • Cream Topping: With White yarn, MR 4 sc. Work *Ch 3, sl st in next st* around to create a “popcorn” texture. Glue this fluffy piece on top of the mug.

  1. Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc around (12).

  7. Rnd 7: (Sc 2, Dec) around (18). Stuff firmly.
  8. Rnd 8: Dec around to close. Sew to the sides of the caravan base.

The Campfire

Logs (Make 5):

  • With Brown: Ch 5, join to form ring. Sc around for 10 rows. Stuff lightly and sew ends closed. Stack them in a pile.

Flames:

  • With Red/Orange: Ch 7. Sl st in 2nd ch, Sc, Hdc, Dc, Tr. Fasten off. Make 4-5 “tongues” of fire.
  • Sew the flames into the center of the logs. Use a pet brush to fluff the yarn for a realistic fire effect.

Part 5: The Polar Bear

Head & Body

Using White yarn. Work in continuous spiral.

  1. Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc 1, Inc) around (18).
  4. Rnd 4: (Sc 2, Inc) around (24).
  5. Rnd 5-8: Sc around (24).
  6. Rnd 9 (Neck): (Sc 2, Dec) around (18).
  7. Rnd 10: (Sc 2, Inc) around (24).
  8. Rnd 11-15: Sc around (24).
  9. Rnd 16: (Sc 2, Dec) around (18). Stuff firmly.
  10. Rnd 17: Dec around. Close hole.

Features: Sew small semi-circles for ears. Embroider a black nose and eyes.

Limbs (Make 4)

  • Rnd 1: MR 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2-5: Sc around. Stuff lightly. Sew onto body in a sitting position.

Striped Scarf

  • Using Brown: Ch 35.
  • Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Change to Cream. Hdc in next 2 sts. Alternate colors every 2 stitches. Fasten off and fringe ends.

Final Assembly

  1. Interior Decor: Glue the shelves to the back wall. Arrange the jars and spices on the shelves. Glue the mugs onto the counter or floor area.
  2. Exterior: Position the bear sitting outside. Sew a mug to his paw if desired. Place the campfire next to him.
  3. Touch-ups: If the roof isn’t “dripping” enough, you can surface crochet extra chains and slip stitches along the white border to add more volume.

Congratulations! You have completed your Hot Cocoa Caravan. This detailed, sturdy playset is perfect for holiday decorations or as a special handmade gift.
