The Nanny Sheep – Free Crochet Pattern

Practically perfect in every way! This delightful crochet pattern brings to life a charming character inspired by the world’s most famous magical nanny. The “Nanny Sheep” is an intricate amigurumi doll featuring a textured woolly head, a sweet beige face, and an outfit ready for a day of adventure and tidying up.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – Magic Ring
  • ch – Chain
  • sc – Single crochet
  • hdc – Half double crochet
  • dc – Double crochet
  • inc – Increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec – Decrease (invisible decrease recommended)
  • sl st – Slip stitch
  • st(s) – Stitch(es)
  • BLO – Back loop only
  • FLO – Front loop only
  • Bobble – 5-dc bobble stitch (Yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop, pull through 2 loops. Repeat 4 times. YO and pull through all 6 loops).
  • Lemon Peel St – Alternating sc and dc in the same row to create texture.
  • […] – Repeat instructions within brackets
  • (X) – Total number of stitches at the end of the round/row

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight cotton or acrylic yarn in:
    • Beige (Face, ears, hands, legs)
    • Cream/Off-White (Woolly hair)
    • Navy Blue (Dress)
    • Taupe/Greyish-Brown (Coat)
    • Black (Hat, Boots, Bow tie)
    • Carpet Bag Colors: Variegated or scraps of Rust, Green, Beige, Blue.
    • Parrot Colors: Red, Green, Yellow, Blue scraps.
    • Blue & Grey (Umbrella)
  • Hook: 2.5 mm or 2.75 mm crochet hook.
  • Eyes: 10mm Black Safety Eyes.
  • Structure: Wire (for umbrella handle and arms), Cardboard (bag base and feet soles).
  • Tools: Tapestry needle, scissors, stuffing, black ribbon (optional for bow), fabric glue.

Gauge & Size

Gauge: 24 sc x 24 rows = 10 cm (4 inches).
Finished Size: Approximately 28 cm (11 inches) tall.

 

Pattern Instructions: The Sheep

Head

Start with Beige yarn (Muzzle).

  • Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12)
  • Rnd 3: [1 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (18)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (24)
  • Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (30)
  • Rnd 6–9: Sc around (30)
  • Rnd 10: [4 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (36)
  • Rnd 11: [5 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (42)
  • Rnd 12: [6 sc, inc] repeat 6 times (48)
  • Rnd 13–18: Sc around (48)

Change to Cream Yarn. We will now start the wool texture using Bobble Stitches.

  • Rnd 19: [Bobble, sc] around (24 bobbles).
  • Rnd 20: Sc around (48).
  • Rnd 21: [Sc, Bobble] around (24 bobbles).
  • Rnd 22: Sc around (48).
  • Rnd 23: [6 sc, dec] repeat 6 times (42).
  • Rnd 24: [Bobble, sc] pattern adjusting for stitch count.
  • Rnd 25: [5 sc, dec] repeat 6 times (36).
  • Rnd 26: Bobble round.
  • Rnd 27: [4 sc, dec] repeat 6 times (30).
  • Rnd 28: [3 sc, dec] repeat 6 times (24).

Insert safety eyes on the Beige section between Rnds 12-13. Embroider a Y-shaped nose. Stuff firmly.

  • Rnd 29: [2 sc, dec] repeat 6 times (18).
  • Rnd 30: Dec around (9). Close hole.

Ears (Make 2)

Use Beige yarn.

  • Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: [1 sc, inc] around (9).
  • Rnd 3: [2 sc, inc] around (12).
  • Rnd 4–6: Sc around (12).
  • Rnd 7: [2 sc, dec] around (9).




Flatten and sew to the sides of the head where the beige meets the cream wool.

Legs (Make 2)

Start with Black (Boots).

  • Rnd 1: Ch 6, sc around with increases at ends (14).
  • Rnd 2: Inc, sc 4, 3 inc, sc 4, 2 inc (20).
  • Rnd 3: BLO sc around (20).
  • Rnd 4–5: Sc around (20).
  • Rnd 6: Dec x 4 at toe, sc rest (16).
  • Rnd 7: Change to Beige. BLO sc around (16).
  • Rnd 8–12: Sc around (16).
  • Rnd 13: Change to Navy Blue. Sc around (16).
  • Rnd 14–20: Sc around (16).

Fasten off first leg. Join second leg with ch 3 and continue to Body.

Body (Dress)

Use Navy Blue.

  • Rnd 21: Sc around both legs and chain (38).
  • Rnd 22–26: Sc around (38).
  • Rnd 27: BLO sc around (38) – Skirt attaches here later.
  • Rnd 28–35: Sc around (38).
  • Rnd 36: [Dec, sc 17] x 2 (36).
  • Rnd 37: [4 sc, dec] around (30).
  • Rnd 38–40: Sc around (30).
  • Rnd 41: [3 sc, dec] around (24).
  • Rnd 42: [2 sc, dec] around (18).

Fasten off. Stuff firmly. Sew head to body.

Skirt: Attach Navy Blue to FLO of Rnd 27. Work dc around, increasing every 5th st. Work 15 rounds of dc or until desired length.

The Coat & Hat

Textured Coat

Use Taupe/Grey yarn. Work in rows using Lemon Peel Stitch (sc 1, dc 1 repeat) for texture.

  • Row 1: Ch 31. Sc in 2nd ch and across (30).
  • Row 2: [Sc, dc] across (30).
  • Row 3–15: Repeat row 2.
  • Row 16 (Armholes): Work 5 sts, ch 6 (skip 4), work 12 sts, ch 6 (skip 4), work 5 sts.
  • Row 17: Work across including chains.
  • Row 18–20: Work pattern. Decrease slightly at neck.
  • Collar: Attach yarn at neck, work 2 rows of hdc, turning at ends for rounded collar.
  • Sleeves: Attach yarn to armholes, work Lemon Peel stitch in rounds for 10 rounds.

Black Hat

Use Black yarn.

  • Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: Inc around (12).
  • Rnd 3: [1 sc, inc] around (18).
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] around (24).
  • Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] around (30).
  • Rnd 6: [4 sc, inc] around (36).
  • Rnd 7–11: Sc around (36).
  • Rnd 12 (Brim): FLO [2 sc, inc] around (48).
  • Rnd 13: [3 sc, inc] around (60).
  • Rnd 14: Sc around.

Decorate with a small crocheted flower (Pink/Red).

Accessories

Carpet Bag

Use Variegated yarn or alternate colors every row (Rust, Green, Beige).

  • Main Piece: Ch 21. Sc in 2nd ch and across (20). Work rows of sc for about 15 cm (6 inches).
  • Sides (Make 2): Ch 7, sc across (6). Work rows for 5 cm.
  • Assembly: Fold the main piece into a U-shape. Sew the side panels in. Stuff firmly with a cardboard base inside to keep it flat.
  • Handles: Ch 25, sc back down. Sew to top edges. Pinch the top opening slightly to give it that “carpet bag” shape.

Parrot Umbrella

Umbrella: With Blue yarn, MR 6 sc. Inc to 36. Work 10 rounds. Insert wire for handle.
Parrot Handle:
Head (Red): MR 4 sc, inc to 8. Sc 2 rounds.
Beak (Yellow): Ch 2, sc. Sew to face.
Wings (Green): Small ch 3 loops.
Slide the parrot head onto the top of the umbrella handle wire. Wrap the wire in brown yarn for the stick.

Spoonful of Sugar

Spoon: Use Grey yarn. Ch 8. Sl st back down 5 sts. In the last ch, work 5 dc to make the spoon bowl.

Sugar: White yarn, tiny bobble or French knot glued to the spoon bowl.

Assembly

  1. Dress the sheep in the coat. Tie a black velvet ribbon around the neck for the bow tie.
  2. Place the hat on the head (you can stuff it lightly to keep shape).
  3. Sew the arms (Beige, MR 6, sc 10 rounds) to the body inside the coat sleeves.
  4. Attach the umbrella to one hand and the bag to the other (or place bag at feet).
  5. Stitch the spoon to the hand if desired.
