The Hydrangea Bear – Free Crochet Pattern

This bear is a vision of pastel elegance. She features a classic teddy bear silhouette with soft, rounded ears and a sweet, embroidered expression. Her wardrobe is a masterpiece of color transition. She wears a voluminous dress that begins in a soft Baby Blue at the bodice and transitions seamlessly into a delicate Lilac at the ruffled hem, perfectly mimicking the shifting colors of a hydrangea petal. To protect her shoulders from the sun, she wears a white, open-work mesh bolero. Her head is adorned with a downturned straw hat featuring a cluster of miniature hydrangea blossoms. She walks through the garden in pastel blue shoes, carrying a large, hand-crocheted hydrangea bloom and a pair of silver pruning shears. She is accompanied by a slow-moving but adorable pink snail friend. This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters who love color work and floral themes.

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the bear body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished bear stands approximately 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) tall. The clothing is designed to be removable, adding an element of interactive play.

Construction Overview

The bear is constructed in pieces. The head is round with a sewn-on muzzle. The body is pear-shaped and sturdy, formed by joining the legs. The dress is the centerpiece, worked from the waist up for the bodice and waist down for the skirt, utilizing a color change to create the ombre effect. The bolero is worked in rows with a mesh stitch. The accessories—the large flower, shears, and snail—are detailed miniatures.
