The Quilter Bear – Free Crochet Pattern

This beautiful Golden Brown bear is a tribute to the art of quilting. She features a classic teddy bear silhouette with soft, rounded ears and a gentle muzzle. Her outfit is a masterpiece of miniature textile art: she wears a stunning, floor-length dress constructed from actual miniature crocheted “Granny Squares” in soft pastel hues, mimicking a vintage heirloom quilt. Beneath this, she wears a crisp white shirt with a smart collar. Her look is completed with a dusty pink bonnet tied with a silk ribbon and sensible dark brown loafers. She carries the tools of her trade: a heart-shaped pincushion, a tote bag for her fabric scraps, and she is accompanied by a mischievous Calico cat who seems determined to unroll her thread. This project is a labor of love, perfect for intermediate crocheters ready to combine amigurumi with motif work.

  • DK weight yarn in Dark Brown (Shoes)
  • DK weight yarn in Dusty Pink (Bonnet)
  • DK weight yarn in Red (Heart Pincushion)

  • Pair of 10mm black safety eyes
  • Dark brown embroidery thread (Nose/Mouth)

  • A few sewing pins with colored heads (for the pincushion prop – be careful if giving to a child)

Gauge & Finished Size

Work tightly in continuous spiral rounds for the bear body so the stuffing does not show. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook, the finished bear stands approximately 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) tall. The dress is removable, but the shirt is integrated into the body to reduce bulk.

Construction Overview

The bear is constructed in pieces. The head is round with a sewn-on muzzle. The body is formed by joining the legs; we will switch colors at the waist to create the “white shirt” layer seamlessly. The dress is the most intricate part, constructed by making miniature granny squares, joining them into a fabric, and then adding the bodice. The accessories (pincushion, bag, cat) are detailed miniatures.
